Daily News blog Friendly Fire getting dustier
There hasn't been a dust-up at any of the Times blogs yet to date that is like the one at the Daily News blog friendlyfire (insidesocal.com/friendlyfire) between lite-right Chris Weinkopf and resident Mexican American (her description, not mine) Mariel Garza.
It turns out that for people who write for print, both Chris and Mariel as bloggers are refreshingly incautious.
A couple of posts back, she took a hard line on journalists giving to political campaigns:
Chris calls out No Guns convicted but not-yet-sentenced homie Hector "Big Weasel" Marroquin as as "a sign that City Hall's anti-gang programs aren't working."
But also calling him "a voice for gun control" was too much for Mariel...

I was profoundly dismayed to read MSNBC's list of 144 journalists who have contributed to political campaigns . But even more than that, I was suprised that so many were newspaper reporters. You kinda expect that from TV people.Never mind the latter point; who's going to refute the former? Everybody. Calling Chris...and Jonathan... and...Shame on them. Rule No. 1 is not to enter into conflicts of interest....
I did enjoy seeing LA Timesers on the list. I guess the general haughtiness of the staff there doesn't necessarily extend to ethical excellence.
The one person to complain about journalists giving to campaigns at this site is Mariel, and no one's ever accused her of being a conservative! As for what I've heard from actual conservatives, the complaint isn't about journalists' giving money to pols -- most, I suspect, would agree with Jonathan on this point -- but that the pols collecting the money here are overwhelmingly liberal.And when things went back to street level, that's where they got even more bloggier.

Sorry Chris, but I just have to call you out on the jab at some "gun control" group, in the entry below . "No Guns" might sound like a gun control org, but it's just a catchy name for a questional gang-intervention program in Los Angeles. Sadly, I find this typical conservative knee-jerk reaction from gun nuts who craft evidence for their argument in places where it doesn't exists. This is case in point.

Mariel, please note that I never called No Guns a gun-control group, and I said that it worked on "anti-gang efforts." I was just pointing out the irony of Big Weasel's being a "voice" for gun control -- which is how he has been described in the press.
Grasping at Straws
Chris's evidence in the previous post backing up his incorrect characterization of No Guns as a gun control group (rather than a sham anti-gang program in LA) is pretty pathetic. Chris, really. One news story from a local TV station? You and I very well know that TV people often engage in sloppy reporting and this seems to be just that case.C'mon. Just do like Rocky and admit you were wrong.
This is only summer day two, but I think I'll get the popcorn and grab a seat.

C'mon. Just do like Villaraigosa and admit you were wrong.
We love the Daily News. At least they report the facts whether it hurts feelings or not. No comparison to LA Slimes and in fact more people are reading Daily News and its being e-mailed all over town. Mariel is a whuss. All she does is cry and play the victim then uses being a Mexican to gain sympathy. She sided with the illegals so I'm sure you know what people think of her. She has no clue what the Mexican born and raised in Los Angeles think of those illegals.
No I am not going to delete it. With Martini Republic gone, LA Voice jumping the shark on a daily basis, Boi-from-Troy becoming "rate a twink" and the WWG (LA)observing the OLD GREY HAG ON SPRING STREET, MS is going to have to step up and cover more than just eminent domain abuse and Mayor V's "anchor baby." Lots going on in this town and its all important.

why did you have to minimize "eminent domain" abuse. I only posted three thread on "ED" our of all my threads on all of mayor sam. (And two of them were over the ordinance passed this last week.)

ZD...we should write about how eminent domain is abused. Remember the luggage store guy I wrote about that shady Eric Garcetti tried to take away his building for a W hotel?
The idea that a reporter is biased or unbiased based on whether he contributes to a campaign is unconvincing. If the reporter states facts accurately, without omitting material facts, and presents the contentions of people from both sides of any given issue, then he or she is fair. Contributions can be made by people who are fair or unfair. Reporters should be judged on their reporting, not their contributions.

You think it's more boring than Dookie? I think that Garza is right; journalists shouldn't give money to little pet causes they cover. Fishbowlla said the same thing, so it must be true.

I'll chime in with my "DOS CENTAVOS WORTH" I ventured over to the "MOLDY GREEN SHEET" site and was amused with the content. Cartoonist Patrick O'Conner makes me crave the past works of Cartoonist Michael Ramirez, glad the "MOLDY GREEN SHEET" has not phase out their cartoonist.
In regards to pursuing other topics besides "sAncha Watch/BABY VILLAR ?". yes we need to expand our horizons.
MEMO TO THE "ZUMA DOGG, ESQUIRE",
the "KILO CASE" that the "ACTIVIST ELEMENT" on the Supreme Court push through is the tool that CRA will use to usurp "PROPERTY RIGHTS" and pave the way for the building of the transit versions of "POTEMPKIN VILLAGES" across Los Angeles expecially along the extention of the Gold Line into CD 14 and East L.A.

Potemkin villages were, purportedly, fake settlements erected at the direction of Russian minister Grigori Aleksandrovich Potemkin to fool Empress Catherine II during her visit to Crimea in 1787. Conventional wisdom has it that Potemkin, who led the Crimean military campaign, had hollow facades of villages constructed along the desolate banks of the Dnieper River in order to impress the monarch and her travel party with the value of her new conquests, thus enhancing his standing in the empress's eyes.
I'm glad Chris at DN is going after those gang programs. Thanks for having balls Chris. Seems everyone in town is afraid to open that Pandora Box. You see the difference between LA Slimes and Daily News. LA Slimes would never allow their people to exchange jabs publicly. Gotta love the Daily News for being that open. Mariel has gotten into tons of trouble with her columns. It doesn't seem she knows mcuh about any issue let alone gun control, gangs, illegals but she supports them. She writes about one topic without doing her homework and researching and plays it off as its what most people feel. WRONG.
In Los Feliz, the police last week announced that they caught the "23" taggers, who had peppered the flats with the number a couple of weeks ago. There was a little fanfare. The taggers responded by tagging a statue of the Virgin Mary two days ago at the recognizably anglo St. Mary's, a Lithuanian church, defacing her.
Who tags a statue of Mary? That's when I learned how aggressive the gangs are getting in their response to the police.
You never read about Catholic churches and their statuary getting defaced; not much appeal to print editors there.
Good Afternoon Joseph,
The new breed on the streets, aka, "YOUNGSTERS" in Barrio parlance, do not have the same "DSYFUNCTIONAL VALUES" that the "O.G.s" had. One being that you don't put your "FLAKA" on murals or walls containing the picture of the "VIRGIN MARY".
Say a pray for our new "LOST GENERATION" of gang members. They need it.
