Federal Monitors

United States Justice Department observers will monitor municipal elections in Azusa, Gardena, Paramount and Rosemead to ensure the four cities are providing voting materials in languages other than English.

The observers will watch and record activities at the polls.

Attorneys with the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division will coordinate the federal activities and maintain contact with local election officials, according to the government.

In Azusa, Paramount and Rosemead, the monitoring is being done according to court orders issued in 2005.

Under the Voting Rights Act, local governments must provide voters with ballots and other election materials in languages other than English if a sufficient portion of the population speaks those languages.

Complaints about discriminatory voting practices can be filed by calling the Justice Department at (800) 253-3931.

speaking of feds....Guantanamo Bay hearings for 14 suspects will be closed to the media to protect national security interests that could be compromised by the detainees' statements.

what could a foreign terrorist possibly say that would compromise our national security? please explain.
sounds like democracy just lost the part about 'by the people'.

its now 'government of the people, for the people, by the government'.

The trials could reveal our methods for collecting information by, for example, revealing the names of our informants. The trials could also allow the suspects to transmit messages, in code, to those left behind, to begin some operation, or to stop trusting some individual, or using some technology that they have figured out we used to catch them.
