The 2007 Race Is Over. Let's Talk 2009.

In 2009, the City will hold its next set of elections. The odd-numbered City Council District seats will be up for grabs. Ditto the City Attorney position, Controller. And, oh yeah, and the Mayor's office. God only knows what idiotic "measures" will be on the ballot. Probably something requiring every homeowner to make half of his property available for "affordable housing."

The earliest date for candidates for Mayor, City Attorney and Controller to file papers to start raising money is two years before the election, is this coming Wednesday, March 7, 2007. (Speaking of which, did you ever notice that most of us Americans mis-pronounce "Wednesday" by transposing the "n" and the "d"? Say it the right way, will you? "WeD-Nes-day.")

So I have three questions for you. Use your real names when you answer, so you can get credit later for accurate answers, and grief for wrong ones. Here we go:

1. Who is going to file for which offices, and when? Who will win?
2. Who would you like to see file for which offices, and why?
3. While Villaraigosa is still in his first term, will he run for some other office and, if so, which one? Will he get that other office?

Hey, anyone remember the only REAL mayoral debate broadcast by any of the local media in the 2005 race? You know KABC 790 Mayoral Candidates Forum?

1. Parks will definitely run for Mayor again just to satisfy his physical dependence on power. He won't win.

2. You already know who I'd like to see run for Mayor, and for the same reasons I supported you last time.

3. Villaraigosa is definitely not headed to Washington any time soon and I frankly don't see him running for Governor either. I think he'll duke it out for another term of unfinished business against Bernie, Alarcon, and _________?

MS,

Because of the term limit expansion and the nearly 100% election rate for incumbents, more Council members will run unopposed. Anyone wishing to jump into the race will have to seriously consider why to throw 'good money after bad'. (Reference the excellent opinion piece "Go Ahead, Throw Away your Vote" by Robert Greene in the LA Times, Feb. 26, 2007).

Of course, incumbency is difficult to overcome anywhere in the country and we generally get lifelong politicians in most offices. Experienced government officials can be a good thing, but more often than not, we get lazy, cowardly politicians addicted to the power and money available to them. If we can get private money out of city hall and elections in general, we'll see better candidates and get better governance. The current incumbents know they are safe because of their ability to extort campaign money from vested city council interests afraid to be left on the wrong side of an election.

Public financing of political campaigns and real ethics reform are what we need most for 2009.

David Cain's "credentials" need to be verified. He had a dishonerable discharge from the coast guard...Law Enforcement? Mentoring? Ask him where he PURCHASES his honey from(Piru Honey) he does not produce his own honey. His ego is what drives him, not his intention to serve. He is not capable of representing an entire city area, let alone a small community.
