Establishment Candidate?

Chief of Staff to 40th District Assemblyman Lloyd "The Bachelor" Levine, Stuart Waldman has been gearing up for a campaign to succeed his boss in 2008. Waldman has been doing a yeoman's job of lining up cash and endorsements for the coming Democratic primary (which is the real battle here because due to the gerrymandering of the District its highly unlikely a Republican candidate will run let alone have any real chance of winning). More importantly, in this old, dead Republican Mayor's view, Stuart Waldman has spent more than a decade working in the trenches, making his bosses look good and taking care of what constituents ask for.

Anyway, I digress. Among those names mentioned as potential opponents to Waldman in the primary include City Controller Laura Chick and City Councilwoman Wendy Greuel. However, both those pols have their sights set on other positions.

Local political wags have however, been putting a buzz in the ear of this blogger about the plans of Bob Blumenfeld - an aide to longtime Congressman Howard Berman - to challenge Stuart for the nomination.

The view is that Blumenfeld wants to tackle the conventional wisdom that Stuart has "earned" the seat, that it's his "turn" or even that he is the front runner. Quite frankly that Stuart is the "establishment" candidate.

However all of this begs the fundamental question: Which candidate has their high profile boss making phone calls strong arming local electeds to endorse them? Nope, not Stuart. Reports are that - true to his machine ways - Berman is allegedly putting pressure on these pols to pony up support for his Bobby. In the meantime, Stuart has secured his own endorsements, working hard and demonstrating that he would make an excellent Assemblyman. I've seen no evidence that Stuart has asked anyone to carry his water.

Like Stuart or not, no one can say that the man hasn't worked hard, got results and has established himself as a significant political figure in the San Fernando Valley. Blumenfeld is welcome to take Stuart on, but he's going to have an uphill climb convincing voters he's their man.

sniffle sniffle.

lil stu? the establishment candidate? (hiccup) wow, i am actually crying.

ok (deep breath) stuart will not be the nominee for several reasons.

1. most of the money he has raised was a loan ala walter moore.

2. levine has not been making calls for stuart because stuart talks crap about his boss behind his back.

3. hertzberg will not be making calls for his former chief of staff because stuart talks crap behind his back when he was speaker.

4. laura chick will clear the field, but this assumes that term-limits aren't extended in feb.

5. levine has told stuart he still plans on running for senate because sheila has made it abundantly clear she will retire. however, when levine does a poll today, tomorrow and next year his father will be smart enough NOT to have his son run for senate against pavley.

6. stuart has shown in the past he is easily out-manuevered and Larry will not let his son be pushed around by waldman.

7. because stuart makes more mistakes, is lazier than a dog on a hot summer day and no one really likes him.

ok -- that was fun mayor sam -- give me another one.

Stuart talks shit about everyone behind their back and never has the balls to cough it up when he is caught. tsk tsk tsk Not very Assemblyman like.

That is 100% correct about his money, it is the SAME "100K" HE HAD LAST TIME HE RAN! Didn't spend one thin dime. A complete Walter Moor-on move and transparent as hell.

There is a bigger reason why Stu will lose... just wait for this one!

Bob would be a good choice.

Then again, my left nut would be a better Assemblyman than Waldman!

Mayor Sam - you say that Stuart Waldman has worked hard for the people of his district and gotten "results" and that nobody could question that. Well, I'm doing it. MS, can you kindly name a few significant accomplishments of Stuart (I'd even take Levine as his proxy in your argument) on real issues facing the west valley. Thank you.
