RED SPOT INSTITUTE'S "OUTTAKES FROM CD 14"

1. ACADEMIA CONTROVERSY DIVIDES A COMMUNITY:
As seen on this blog, the controversy over the Charter renewal for Academia Semillas del Pueblo, has aroused passions in the El Sereno community. We received an E-mail about the roll that LA 90032 Neighborhood Council has played in this controversy. A "letter of support for charter renewal" was drafted by the LA 90032 board. Community members who attended the NC meeting, do not recall that community input was ask for in the drafting of this letter. It is well known in the El Sereno community that LA 90032 President, Hugo Garcia, is a supporter of Academia.

2. ADELANTE REDEVELOPMENT BOARD ELECTION RESULTS CHALLENGED:
We have received a copy of a letter, drafted by Carlos Morales, Publisher and Editor of "THE VOICE" newspaper, challenging the results of the Adelante R. Redevelopment Board Elections. The basis for this challenge is due to the lack of outreach and "failure to provide PAC ELECTIONS Voter Instructional Manual" to most if not all the businesses in the Valley Blvd. and Alhambra Avenue Corridor. The Adelante Redevelopment Project Area takes in a large area of Boyle Heights. Plus there is discusion of merging the project with the countie's Whiteside Redevelopment Project.

3. THE SOUTHWEST MUSEUM CASINO ??:
In of the intriging comments that appeared in the "NEVER ENDING POST" regarding the Charter Renewal for Academia, was a post about turning the Southwest Museum into a Indian Casino. During the last Assembly race, money from tribal groups was donated to the campaign of "SAN DIEGIAN", Kevin de Leon, aka, "THE CARPETBAGGER". Is this just hearsay ? Or is there some validity to this proposal ? Lastly how would this clash with the "PROMISE" of councilman Jose Huizar, to maintain the Museum and its collection of art work in CD 14 ?

4. COMMUNITY EVENTS:
Thanks to the HISTORIC HIGHLAND PARK NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL for providing a link to events taking place in their community. On April 24, a tour of the Southwest Museum will take place. Please contact the council for more information.

Tony Cardenas takes casino money. Does he want to build one with the Fernardino/Tataviam indians in the North San Fernando Valley, perhaps at Hansen Dam. Then they could have horse racing at the Valley Fair.

The radicals are out today. Hugo Garcia is a homophobic and a radical Mechista. He attacks women who don't agree with him and is an aggressive asshole. The PAC crybabies are mad cause they didn't get re-elected to the board. All they did was complain, complain and were do nothings. No one wanted them back so now they cry again and challenge the elections.

According to campaign expenditure records, deLeon took money from that illegal towing outfit in Bell...the one that was under investigation by the FBI. And according to the same information, deLeon took LOTS of money from the gaming tribes. Now he owes them, Richard Muerelo and some wine and spirits conglomerate from Florida.

about the "roll" that the NC played?

Really? Was it a Danish, or a French roll?

Sheesh!

And these are the posters arguing over what's the best way to handle public education.

Apparently, closing all the public schools wouldn't do much harm.

Let's see how Huizar responds to this since he decided NOT to take the time to become involved PRIOR to NOW and only started taking an interest during the election!

For the first time since the 2003 merger, Autry made a public presentation in September 2006 outlining its future plans for the Southwest Museum site. In essence, a vague outline we dubbed Autry’s “Reduced Plan” would change the Mount Washington site from a museum to a cultural center. Autry continues to insist that it must remove the entire Southwest Museum collection and the primary exhibition space over to its own favored museum in Griffith Park. Autry says IF it can find the funding (after first raising $150 million for Griffith Park expansion) and IF the City approves Autry’s proposal to almost double the size of its favored museum so it can “absorb” the Southwest Museum (that idea is meeting with great public objection), that in 2011, Autry will re-open the Southwest Museum site as the “Southwest Museum Education and Cultural Center.”

This plan reduces the “museum use” to just two rooms of the building – which is no museum at all. The rest of the existing building will be converted to unspecified educational and cultural center uses. The Coalition believes the “Reduced Plan” is more rhetoric and will become yet another broken promise. Autry refuses to give any written enforceable financial commitment for any plan. IF the City grants a permit to expand the Griffith Park museum building, we could easily foresee a new Autry plan: sell 12 acres of prime real estate or give the Southwest Museum building away without fulfilling Autry’s Merger and public promises to protect and retain this important Los Angeles landmark.

Two weeks after the Autry’s announcement of its unfunded, unproven “Reduced Plan,” the Coalition hosted our public meeting and presented an alternative plan to the Autry’s “Reduced Plan.” We call it the “Win-Win Alternative Plan.” An expert historic preservation architectural team, Garavaglia Architecture, prepared this plan for the Coalition.

We started with Option B of the Autry’s Brenda Levin report which proposed a rehabilitation of the Southwest Museum building to modern museum standards for display and exhibition and small expansion of exhibit handling facilities – all of which Ms. Levin’s expert team concluded was feasible. Our plan proposed three important additions to the Autry/Brenda Levin Southwest Museum Option B: (1) an underground parking area constructed just below the existing parking lot, (2) add, where parking currently exists, a series of new buildings that respect the historic character of the original building but provide expanded museum exhibition space, educational classroom spaces, theatre, café, and cultural center uses, and, (3) a freestanding and independently operated restaurant with stunning 180° views of Catalina Island, Downtown Los Angeles, the Arroyo Seco, and the San Gabriel mountains. The expansion of the museum uphill of the current museum building is totally consistent with original plans drawn up by Charles Lummis for the museum (Brenda Levin’s report shows Lummis’ vision of a huge museum extending up the hill) and the restaurant would help draw even more visitors to this visually dramatic site.

Our proposal is a win for Autry because the site will include educational and cultural center uses that Autry currently claims it needs and are feasible for this site. It is a win for the public interest because the Southwest Museum primary exhibition site can be maintained where visionary Charles Lummis sited it nearly 100 years ago. It’s truly a “Win-Win Alternative Plan!” And, this plan is an extension of the mission and consistent position of the Friends of the Southwest Museum Coalition for the past four years.

At the Coalition’s public meetings in October 2006 and January of this year, we presented our “Win-Win Alternative Plan” to many of our participating organization leaders and the public. Overwhelmingly, those present supported and endorsed the Coalition’s “Win-Win Alternative Plan” as superior to the current plan of Autry to move the entire Southwest Museum into its own expanded museum building on City parkland. Los Angeles City Councilmember Jose Huizar, in whose district the Southwest Museum is located, has endorsed our vision and has vowed to champion this plan before City leaders and the philanthropic community.

We have attached to this e-mail an Adobe PDF file that contains a series of presentation slides that summarizes the background and conceptual drawings of the “Win-Win Alternative Plan.” You can also view the Coalition’s latest Powerpoint Presentation that provides the latest information at our website:

Did you catch that in the re-post by 11:31, Red Snot-nosed know-nothing.

The Southwest Museum in MOUNT WASHINGTON, not HIGHLAND PARK.

(Did you also notice your posts only get responses when you mention the charter school in El Sereno?)

Of course you did. That's why you opportunistically jumped on the bandwagon, to make if look like you're "in" too.

Friends of Southwest Museum Coalition is falling apart. Its "leadership" did not have the cojones to act when they needed to - and they dropped the ball for months on end, allowing the Autry to frame the discussion.

While the Coalition leadership had their thumbs up their rear ends, the Autry brought in support from Native American tribes, artists and organizations for the Autry plan. And, the Autry was able to weaken the Coalition's community support and message.

And those "supporting" organizations listed by the Coalition? They are dropping away to the point where their list of supporters is nothing but a paper tiger.

The Coalition leadership is now seen as a bunch of crazies - any clout they had with elected officials has been lost.

It's too bad - they were on the right side of the issue, but their bumbling spokespeople/leaders blew it.

While the museum on Mt. Washington won't be a casino, it will become nothing but a small exhibit space for the Southwest's vast collection - a collection that will now go to Griffith Park never to see the Southwest again.

SW Coalition failed in one major way.

They BELIEVED Mayor V when he was the councilmember.

Dropped into their biggest meeting, said "I'll save it all, just tell me what you want me to do. I'll make Autry listen, I'll make them honor their agreements."

"OH, but you have to elect me mayor, because then I'll have MUCH more power to fix this all. Bye-bye, gotta go, got to go make some more insincere promises"

Don't ever believe the mayor, and you have muchos more chances of surviving.

One this Jim Hahn's campaign people got right (maybe only one), when they tried to tell people, Tony Villar is NOT a man of his word.

Period.

DUDE, you really don't have enough of any kind of "insider" understanding to talk about a community being "divided" (even the wording suggests what, 50-50? 60-40?)

As with any issue, if you want to inflate and create sparks just for show, you can "get both sides" even if its 99 to 1, but is that "divided?"

Not hardly. The school has the overwhelming support of the community it serves, and there's no "outcry" from more than a handful, who have no clue about the school other than "they beat drums" and the founder doesn't "like White water" (some guy on the radio said so).

Some of these same handful couldn't name the other schools in that community without a Google search and a half hour head start.

Fan the flames, it's the only thing on this blog that get's a rise out of anyone, but it also reveals your "readership" -- the angry tiny minority churned out 200+ of the most illiterate, hateful comments on this blog in a long time, yesterday - from the looks of it, most of them posted by 3-4 people who have never once had the gonads to speak to a single public official, or testify at a public meeting about ir.

And some of those couldn't find El Sereno if there was a map to it tatooed to the private parts where the gonads are missing, and they had jock itch.
