Make Sam Simon Head of Animal Services

Did anyone else watch "60 Minutes" tonight?

One of the guys who created "The Simpsons," named Sam Simon, lives in Malibu and uses his vast wealth to rescue stray dogs and teach them to help the deaf. He also pays for vets in vans to perform spaying and neutering operations for the poor -- well, for their pets.

Not to go all Pollyanna on you, but isn't it nice that someone with a heart got rich and used his money to do some good?

Find out more: Sam Simon Foundation.

That's pretty cool. Much better and more credible than, say, Leonardo DiCaprio blathering about global warming.

And the Simpsons is great satire.

It's pretty old to observe that Walter cares more for animals than human beings, isn't it?

True as ever, though. ;)

"Old" or "odd?" Caring about animals is indeed old, but not odd. People have loved their pets for at least as long as we've had recorded history, as demonstrated by ancient Roman mosaics and Egyptian art. And how sad that you try to hold my commendation of Sam Simon against me. Don't you want to take a dig at him, too? After all, from your perspective, he should presumably use his money to help people, and just let the carnage of innocent dogs and cats continue. Go adopt a dog or cat, would you? A pet will make you less grumpy.

Problem is you must have been watching a rerun, or 60 minutes had this on the shelf for awhile, because Simon's slowing been backing out of the humane treatment of animals "biz". He's cut his contract with the city to do the mobile S & N vans, and has been scaling back in other areas, as well.

Seems, this animal compassion stuff is a whole lot more expensive than he thought it would be and his main business - promoting professional boxers -- isn't as lucrative as it once was. (His mainstays are typically 2nd undercards)

By the time this 60 Mins. episode reruns next time, the Foundation won't be much of anything but a shell.

Sorry to bust your bubble. He really wasn't into it too long.

That's too bad. I wonder what made him scale back. Dealing with the city? Dealing with rescue groups? Short attention span?

IT was a refreshing story to see a guy who's made millions give back to help animals. He also seemed like a nice guy but stated he was a horrible person to work with. Sam was funny and really showed a sensitive side. Too bad his ex-wife Tilly still gets residuals from Simpson's although she admitted last night she didn't think Sam's idea would fly. With all the millionaires living in LA can you imagine all the good they could do if they donated some of the millions they made to help?

Does anyone know if Simon still lives in Malibu? I thought he was in Pacific Palisades now. I'm looking to send him some information and need an address. I'd rather send the info to him directly than go through his foundation. Can anyone help?
If so, please email me at bgran†@istar.ca
thanks
