Murder: 2005 vs. 2006

By Walter Moore, Chief Economist and Legal Analyst, L.A. Policy Institute

According to LAPD statistics, the number of murders committed in the City of L.A. in 2005 was either 487 or 490.

According to the same source, the number in 2006 was 481.

You can download the reports yourself here: L.A.P.D. Crime Statistics.

To understand that these were people, not just statistics, visit The Homicide Report.

Walter,
Who has oversight jurisdiction on Policy Institutes which Politicians continually use for propaganda?

This is from the emotional, pms'ing Jill Leovy of LA Slimes. She's gone all out e-mailing everyone about her new Homicide Report. Please this tabloid loser reporter has been stationed out of South LA for a couple of years now all of a sudden she wants to keep tabs on murders? Her newspaper doesn't even report half the homicides in that area. Kinda of hypocritical don't you think? She writes like a typical emotional woman and doesn't outline facts most of the time. She needs to go to National Enquirer.

After the botched jail/immigrants stats yesterday (not the first really bad math posted by Mr. Moore inn recent months), he has no credibility. Getting the numbers right is Job #1 in any kind of analysis, especially economic. Failing that, all points that follow are indefensible.

also, these numbers are smoke and mirror numbers.
completely inconclusive.
Bratton says that crime is down because of his police.
I say crime is down because its harder to get away with. not because of police, but because of the proliferation of cell phones, and anonymous reports that these phones generate.
look at 9-11 to see how instantly things get reported to authorities now.
I've called for it a hundred times, the real numbers are the homicide fugitives.
LAPD won't publish them because they're bad. I suggest that theres less homicide by 1.8%, but more people are getting away with it.
I'll relax if they give up numbers that show otherwise, meanwhile, theres a ton of homicidal maniacs floating around at large.

and of course, the other reason crime appears to be down, victims who don't report. (obviously not homicides!) because of immigration status, previous history, general fear of reprisal etc etc.
bring out the fugitive numbers, how many homicides remain unsolved from 2006, as a percentage of all homicides (not counting family members or murder suicides where the perpetrator is obvious). now that's a number.
and its not hard to produce. how many homicides* last year, and how many of those unsolved. that number should be easy. even for Walter.
:)

Actually, the statistics are not from the L.A. Times reporter. I got them directly from the LAPD's website.

As for the blog about murder victims, I think it's terrific. These are human beings, not numbers.

As for making a mathematical error yesterday, I did indeed make one; it was pointed out to me; and I corrected it. What an honor it is to have my essays read by people who have never made a mistake!

Speaking of murders, more from our wonderful southern neighbor:

ACAPULCO, Mexico - More than a dozen armed assailants staged simultaneous attacks against two police stations in the Pacific resort city of Acapulco on Tuesday, killing at least seven officers.

Isn't a 1.8% decrease a statistically insignificant number?

LIL Billy Bratton and his b/s crime stats fools no one but himself and the midget mayor! Bratton could'nt figure out who farted in a room if he was the only one in it!!! the stats are a joke, go to the SFV on any given night and listen to the police scanner. Crime will be the down fall of the city along with the illegal immigration that the city fools seem fit to ignore!!!
