Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Tuesday

Despite the fact she's moved from Council District to Council District and has served almost two decades in office, Controller Laura Chick denies she's a carpetbagger and that she's hung around too long (a charge she leveled at former boss and predecessor Joy Picus) as she ponders a 2009 Council run for the seat currently occupied by Jack Weiss. By the way - the reason Chick doesn't want to return to her old San Fernando Valley based seat (besides not wanting to run against current incumbent and ex-motorcycle cop Dennis Zine) is LA traffic. Too much to drive from the West Valley to City Hall. Hmmm, I think there are some constituents who feel the same way.

The LA Times is calling on LA County Supervisor Don Knabe to abstain from votes on the Sunshine Canyon Landfill because his son Matt had served as a lobbyist for landfill operator BFI. We agree.

The NIMBYs in Sunland-Tujunga aren't the only folks who oppose Home Depot. They can find brothers in arms on the more lunatic fringe of the immigration reform movement who don't like Home Depot because - GASP - Mexicans hang out there looking for jobs!

Joe Mailander has taken on self-appointed media experts such as Sherry (Shirley?) Bebitch Jeffe in the past and now Walter Moore has done something about it. Moore has established The LA Policy Institute and appointed himself Chief Economist and Legal Anaylst. Walter certainly has far more credibility as an "economist" than Chief Economist of the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation - Jack Kyser. Compare them side by side: Kyser has a degree in industrial design and an MBA from USC (he's also taken a few classes in what we don't know at UCLA). Walter Moore is Princeton educated International and Public Affairs major and a graduate of Georgetown Law School. Shall we say any more?

More big government being requested in the City of Los Angeles. This time its not someone fighting a Home Depot but some NIMBYs or should we say NIMFYs in Palms who oppose a condo development that whats to use a portion of the previous front yard for more living space. Yet again with a housing crisis in LA someone is gumming up the production of new homes. Do they ever give up?

Any proof that Knabe has served as a lobbyist for BFI?

According to Englander's website:

Matt´s Client List has included: AT&T/SBC West and Cingular Wireless, the Los Angeles County Fire Museum, Los Angeles County Lifeguards Union, Seville Construction, Swinerton Management, CalMet Services, Brookfield Homes, Global 360, Dental Surgicenters of California, Realty Corporation Management Inc (RCMI), Downey Regional Medical Center, Stratton Commercial Properties, Fu-Lyons and Associates, Pac Ten Partners, Starwood Hotels and the St. Regis Dana Point, Pacific Capital Holdings, Kantor Law and Associates, Thever Law and Associates, Security Marketing Group Inc, Agua Dulce Airpark, Randal Hernandez for Long Beach Mayor, Rick Auerbach for County Assessor and Don Knabe for LA County Supervisor.

I doubt that Englander's team could have changed the site so quickly...or that it would leave out a big client such as BFI on Knabe's resume

Or how about NISSAN...I heard they're really struggling this year, and need the money that was earmarked for the kid's youth fair...I think $64,632 would be PERFECT!

If Walter Moore's so well-educated, why does he say such idiotic things on your (and his) blog? Give us Jack Kyser, who's been working in the economic field for decades and actually knows what he's talking about.

Moore's just a frustrated, small-time lawyer looking for a new career. Good luck to him, but he has to prove himself over time before he'll have the kind of credibility Kyser has long since earned.

GOOD BLOGGIN MORNING !!!

OUTTAKES FROM THE RED SPOT INSTITUTE

1. "DO THE CRIME, GO HOME":
"LA ANTONIA TIMES" Editorial on illegal immigrants commiting crimes looks on surface to be a bold pronouncement for the "OLD GREY HAG ON SPRING STREET". This coming on the heels of the editorial regarding the "GREAT LIVING WAGE COMPROMISE" was leading us to wonder whether "NATIONAL REVIEW" had taken over the editorial duties. But upon further reading the editorial gets about only 25% right. First illegals have committed a federal offence when they crossed the border. Second, police in post "9-11" America need to be a layer of defence in protecting American citizens. Third, Gangs have a multi-national network and the demographics reflect the cross border collaboration (M-13). Fourth, the Times inplies that if the spector of deportation would keep illegals from committing crimes ,too late for that. O.K. O'Shea, keep trying, but once again P.C. has distorted what should of been a bold pronouncement for you

2. "ELI BROAD AND HIS GRAND VISION"
Bravo to Joel Kotkin for calling out Eli on his Grand Avenue Project. It was the late Jack Webb who said that Los Angeles was "SEVEN SUBURDS IN SEARCH OF A CITY". Kotkin is right when he states that Los Angeles is a "MULTI-POLAR CITY". Their is not one place that defines this city. A tax-payer subsidized "PROJECT ON A HILL" will not change that.

3. "MAYOR'S FLYING CARPET":
I'm waiting for "HIS POLLONESS" to roll out the red carpet for the first flight of "AIR ICE" to ease crowding at "TWIN TOWERS".

4. "CHICK-en's CARPET BAG":
The "MOTHER HEN OF AUDIT" is pondering moving to CD-5 to further her future supply of public sector living. We and others are waiting for the LA Bridges audit. No audit, no future council seat.

5."4 GIRLS GET PROBATION IN HATE-CRIME CASE":
Beat up white girls, get probation. LAPD shoots 13-year old gang banger, Get chants of "NO JUSTICE-NO PEACE".

That's nice. I worked for a bank too. They'll hire just about anybody.

The point of contention here is not that Kyser is unqualified, it's that scribes do us a disservice by pinging the same experts with the same tired lines. The problem is not with Kyser/Bebitch Jeffe, it's with the scribes who think that there are only two experts in town because there are two people in town who are more willing than everyone else to sugar-coat everything.

Walter - I'm a bit surprised by your view. Is it a private property owner's responsibility to provide "green" or "open" space? And in this case what are we talking about? Ten feet of grass - that a public park does not make. Its up to the developer to build the best product he kind with the greatest likelihood of selling. Otherwise he will be flushing his and his investors' money down the toilet. I am sure these will be very nice condos and if they feel a better use of the space is more interior than a small lawn, so be it.

In other news...

Why'd the Chamber sign on to that living wage agreement last week? According to the LA Business Journal, it's 'cause the Chamber knew they would lose if their measure went before the voters:

"But it appears that business’ hand may have been weakened by the results of two polls on the issue conducted in mid-January. One, commissioned and loudly trumpeted by labor, showed 74 percent support for the living wage ordinance.

The other, commissioned by the hotels, was not made public, and there were differing comments on the results. Publicly, hotel consultant Harvey Englander said “our poll did not show that we could not win the campaign.” But privately, one business leader who said he had seen the poll said the results were not favorable for the hotels and that a lot of effort would have to be made to switch many voters’ views.

“The poll results really took away a lot of the leverage that the hotels thought they had gained by placing the referendum on the ballot,” this business leader said. “It meant that when they were at the negotiating table, they didn’t have much to bargain with, and the Council folks knew this.”

Certainly, Councilwoman Janice Hahn, the sponsor of the living wage ordinance, acted on the assumption that a referendum was a loser for business. At a Jan. 19 breakfast sponsored by the Current Affairs Forum, she and hotel lobbyist George Kieffer sparred over the issue. Kieffer repeatedly sought some sign of compromise; Hahn wouldn’t budge. “You’re trying to get a deal because you know if you go to the people, you’re going to lose big time,” she said.

In case there was any doubt... actually, WAS there any doubt?

My post was in response to Moore, regarding the fact he "took" several courses in economics...and I was not arguing the fact/belief that I am an economist...thus, I was make an inferrence that Moore is not one either.

I can produce more proof if you wish, but be careful what you wish for. You don't have to go look at Englander's website.
