Cost Of Illegal Aliens In L.A. County Jail

By Walter Moore, Chief Economist and Legal Analyst, L.A. Policy Institute

How much are the illegal aliens in county jail costing us? The correct answer is “over $82 million per year.”

That's based on a price of about $53 per day, times 365 days per year, times an estimated 4235 illegal aliens occupying jail cells on any given day throughout a year.

Please note, however, that the $82 million figure does not include the cost of the injuries and property loss their victims suffer; nor the cost of the prosecutors, public defenders and judges involved in their trials; nor the value of the time of the jurors who convict them.

[Author's note: thank you to David Markland, the Mayor Sam reader who helped refine an earlier incarnation of this essay by pointing out my misinterpretation of some federal statistics about the number illegal inmates. To see the underlying figures and sources, visit L.A. Policy Institute.]

Nor does that figure include the cost of Lee Baca's early release policy.

WHo is this weirdo who post dumb shit? Get a life.

Its about time Orange County will now start deporting illegals once they do their time. Corona took a count and there were 2,000 illegals in his jails. Now instead of releasing them back in the neighborhood where they committed the crime they will DEPORT THEM. Bratton does the same for the hard core criminals who are illegal and arrested.

they say they have a lot of success just asking people "are you in this country illegally?"

those who say 'yes', ought to be deported only after a hearing of the facts which will legally determine status.
I couldn't agree more.
