Overall euthanasia rate did not go down. Dog euthanasia went down 4%, cat euthanasia went up, rabbit euthanasia went up 35%, other (wildlife, birds, reptiles, small pets, farm animals) euthanasia went up 4%. The overall euthansia rate was 41%, the same as 2005. This is the ONLY time in the rate has not gone down. The Daily News did not do an honest article.

Most rational, humane post from you, ever, Wacko.

Too bad you couldn't save some of that human attitude for those annoying "ee-legals" you harp on about.

But then, they're just people, who happened to have the bad luck to have been born on the poorer side of the line in the sand.

Euthanasia went up 32% in the last half of the year when he said it would go down. All he did was hold animals longer and just kill them later so the numbers for the first half of year would look good.

If you look at his programs, he did not bring anything new to LA. We already had a bottle baby, STAR, Big Fix, Felix programs just with different names or no names. He wasted all his time rubbing elbows with female rescuers, politicians and celebrities. He did not spend any time on the programs that save lives, i.e. spayneuter.

Daily News, now they're just reposting City press releases. They didn't even check the numbers.

11:48, thanks for revealing your level of respect for people south of the border.

This was a central piece of Walter's campaign before all of the other candidates jumped on the "no-kill" bandwagon.

Why don't you grow up and stop making nonsensical comparisons?

The kill rate is still 41%. 41% of all cats, dogs, birds...were killed in 2006, and in 2005. How do we become nokill by 2008 at this rate? It's not possible. Someone needs to set more realistic goals.

The killing of animals is sickening- i saw the girl's website. It is horrible. Especially because they are so trusting. What to do?

this P.O.S. animal regul.mgr sounds like a lying politician, no wonder he's still around.

This is not only horrible to see, what kind of person can do this- compassionately?

we so have such a double standard for killing the animals we eat everday, why aren't we concerned about those animals?

We must have an aggressive spay/neuter program otherwise the numbers will never go down. Walter, it's a little irresponsible of you to ask, basically anybody, to adopt a pet. Only people who have the time and the money and the love for animals should be asked to adopt. By adopting a pet one is taking on a huge commitment. Please DONT do it lightly or in a weak moment to please the kids.

Everyone should be adopting pets from shelters, not pet stores or breeders. There is no need for people to be breeding animals today when there are so many homeless pets which will just be killed. There are a ton of purebred animals, toy sizes, exotic animals, pocket pets. Go here and find your new best friend

http://www.laanimalservices.com/adoptsearchphotos.htm

you can even search by breed, color, sex, size, type...

It's cheaper to adopt a pet than to adopt one. They even throw in spay/neuter, microchip, vaccinations, a free vet visit, some food...all for $86.

I meant cheaper to adopt than buy one.

Yes, spay neuter is more important to reduce the killing than adopting.

Everyone should adopt a pet. Everyone. I have seen supposed animal rescuers who are so anal about finding the "perfect home" for a pet that they never find ANY homes for the pets.

One family I know was willing to adopt a stray. They TRIED to adopt a three-legged dog from a so-called rescue group. But because the family had two kids under 12, the "rescue" group refused.

Result? Fed up, dad went to a pet store and BOUGHT a dog, and the three-legged dog was still stuck with the so-called rescue group.

The store-bought dog is very happy, because, of course, normal families love and take care of pets.

So don't tell me I'm "irresponsible" for urging people to save the lives of the 19,000 plus dogs and cats that get killed by the city each year.

To stop killing animals in the shelters, the city has to stop them from coming into the shelters and the only way to do that is to kick butt on adoptions and spay/neuter, and to convince people to stop dumping animals in the shelters and to make them part of their families instead.

There ain't no magic wand, no matter who's running the department. The activists and political wannabe's should stop the posturing and find real ways to help.

Pet responsibility begins at home. Adoption is great and I wish more foks would save an animal from euthanasia. However, what I'd really like to see is people keeping their animals inside their property boundries, whether it is their yards or inside their homes. I see way too many cats and dogs running loose in neighborhoods like CD 1 and CD 14, almost getting hit by cars, trash trucks, buses and street sweepers. If you really want to be a responsible pet owner, keep your animals safe and out of the streets.
