Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Thursday
7th District candidate for City Council Oscar Mendoza filed a campaign finance report Wednesday showing that he has raised $43,000 in the first filing period of the race. Mendoza's campaign also claimed that he received nearly 15 percent more nomination signatures than State Assemblyman-elect Richard Alarcón and former Riordan aide Monica Rodriguez. Mendoza, 32, heads his family's regional construction firm.
The price tag on the new Los Angeles Police Department headquarters keeps rising. The project is under the helm of controversial and well connected construction firm Tutor Saliba and has double in cost from its original estimates. The LA Times Steve Lopez is watching construction from his office window and sees not much work going on.
The Jonathan Club is a legendary downtown landmark where LA's elite meet and greet. Luke Thompson of the LA Weekly has a story on what possibly may be a major sex scandal facing the private club.
Four years ago UTLA and the Democratic elite lined up to oppose school board member Caprice Young who this old, dead Republican mayor counts as one of the greatest local elected officials ever to serve Los Angeles. They put their money and their muscle behind union hack and longtime teacher Jon Lauritzen. It also didn't help that Young's district was gerrymandered from her South Valley base. Four years later San Fernando Valley Democrats voted to not endorse Laurtizen for re-election. Some of the incumbent's supporters are quietly speculating that Lauritzen's opposition to Mayor Villaraigosa's school takeover is to blame as the Democrats are hoping to curry favor with the powerful mayor.
And finally the Daily News has the tale of the many and varied items left behind on Metropolitan Transportation Agency buses and trains that wind up at the agency's lost and found.

Good morning Captain Jack -
What does my being a shellback have anything to do with being a no-show? Yes, I am a shellback initiated into the Ancient Order of the Solemn Mysteries of the Deep. Big deal. And since you are into drama, I'll punctuate my remarks in a way you can surely understand, okay?
(Looks at Jack Sparrow through narrowed eyes and draws sword)
I am traveling with a group of people who have rearranged their schedule for me. If you bail on me, then you get whatever it is coming to you in terms of nautical bad luck.
(Waives Neptunus Rex certificate in Jack's face)
And if you're going to hold my line crossing against me then everyone will know that you're a coward and a fraud. You WILL show up, even if its for 20 seconds, because a deal is a deal, got it?
(puts tip of sword at Jack Sparrow's throat and glares at Jack Sparrow)
There is only one acceptable response that you can make, and it consists of two words, none of which contain the letters F or Y. So Jack Sparrow, what do you have to say?

I am turning over a new leaf. I typically didn't support Zuma for all his rantings and ravings but now that he's on the right mark going after the Mayor for takeover on lAUSD I say go for it. His argument is right on target. I hope he learns to organize and get people to support his cause and the mayor folds and once again it becomes another failure for him.

Antonio is a clown. Instead of dealing with all the issues of the city he's campaigning once again on candidates for school board. How much of our tax dollars is he wasting not doing his job? His job is mayor of the city and he's failing at that and instead of fixing the problems he's obsessed with getting his way.
.....Villaraigosa had powerful reasons to think longer about his endorsement decisions in the three other races. He has been trying to avoid, or at least postpone, a fight with United Teachers Los Angeles, which favors incumbent Jon Lauritzen in the San Fernando Valley, and the black political establishment in South Los Angeles, much of which leans toward incumbent Marguerite Poindexter LaMotte.

You get me out of bed to read something written by some woman?
(reads Ms. Allen-Newman's post and eyes get wide)
Oh, bugger.
(makes elegant leg)
Apologies tendered.
(doffs hat)
Until then.
(speaks confidentially to crew)
Who gave her the sword? Didn't I tell you that its unwise to give women sharp objects? Bloody hell, the next thing we know, Lisa Sarno will be brandishing a a pair of pinking shears and neighbourhood councils, if you will, shall find themselves on the bad end of an even worse chop job!

Smear Campaign launched against Jose Huizar in El Sereno. For years, there's been an abuse several to smear opponents. I hate to say it but The Voice paper has gone too far.

Word is this is Alvin Parra's paper. He is the biggest crook in town. Officer Morales would never comment or give quotes against the councilman and that's a fact. This is Alvin's desperate attempt to smear Jose. Alvin has more baggage then LAX.

Hey hold on a minute!
Alvin bitch slapped community.
Steve informed readers of escalated property crime, gang crime, dui arrests, gunfire up.
Steve's article follows immediately after Alvin's ---Why am I running against Huizar? Story mentions negative light on LAPD crime & community. Below this story follows Steve's account of increased crime in Northeast Losangeles.

Baggage? What stinkin Baggage?

Alvin may have baggage but Jose has freight. And everybody knows it.

Its hard to believe an officer gave quotes against a councilman. Unless there is proof then I don't believe a word. Alvin is a disgruntled employee. He has no class, no education, he should take inventory of his own background before throwing stones. The fact that he's come out of the gate so negative already leads people to go the other way but they're sick and tired of the dirt instead of issues.

"Homicides are up more than 10% this past year in the Northeast area. We've had almost 30 homocides in the district this year, yet, Mr. Huizar gave staff no policy direction or guidance on how to work with LAPD to reduce violent crimes or even tell us how he would like us to support victims of crime."
"In January 2006, I was in a briefing with Mr. Huizar, his Chief of Staff Tony Ricasa and an official with LAPD. THe LAPD official asked Mr. Huizar for his phone number to reah him 24 hours a day, since it's customary to call the councilperson when a homicide occurs. Mr. Huizar responded by telling the LAPD official to call Mr. Ricasa instead and theat Ricasa would call him if it was newsworthy."

The article harbors no quotes against Huizar by an officer. Not a single blogger posted such an accusation. Before you ask for evidence, recheck your premeditated assumptions.
He may have contributed to negative journalism for Alvin, otherwise direct quote is non existent.

HELLLLLOOOOO!!!! WE'RE TALKING ALVIN PARRA THE BIGGEST LOSER IN CD14 WHO WAS DEMOTED BECAUSE HE WASN'T DOING HIS JOB AND BADMOUTHING THE BOSS BEHIND HIS BACK WHILE IN THE DISTRICT.
Anyone knows you don't bad mouth your boss being dumb enough to not think its going to get back to them. This paper has a straight connection to Alvin. Now, Alvin being the sleaze bag crook that he is misquotes (as happens all the time) an officer's comments and puts in his paper. This is such a trash paper they don't even have a web site.
Anonymous said:
That story about Jose not wanting to give cell to LAPD was spread throughout the community by staffers like Gustavo and Eric Robles. A lot of people heard it so Alvin is blaming one person to put in the paper.
Here's a change. Wonder if Antonio will show up for his photo op.

THE VOICE
The North East Los Angeles Communities

Editors Note-Carlos Morales
Dear Neighbors,
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!.. We start our year with a very important election coming up in a couple of months and I for one am very disappointed of the lack of economic investment and devlopment in this community that is taken for granted. "I have lived in El Sereno for most of my life and you can basically look at any pictures taken from thirty years ago of Eastern avenue, Huntington Drive, Alhambra Avenue, or Valley Blvd. and see very little change in a picture taken in January 2007! It is amazing when we see changes in Alhambra-Main street for example...
Communities around us have made strides to improve their conditions. I just don't see any one of our past council members make a significant contribution to this community with the exception to Dr. Donald newman, former member and President of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
We have not seen any significant City involvement to generate development in this community that impacts in the quality of life for these stakeholders. An example of this is that we have no movie theaters (in fact our only theatre closed)- most of all residents go City of Alhambra, Pasadena, which benefits from all the Taxes generated from our community.
I ask that my fellow stakeholders in the 14th Council District get involved and demand that who ever gets elected to serve our community really roll up their sleeves and make a commitment to produce a difference in this community which has been neglected for years now.
The Los Angeles Police Department, Hollenbeck Division, which serves Boyle Heights, has one of the highest robbery rates in the city. They were up 20 percent in 2006.
This City Council District 14 has had its share of bad and or dirty slugfest campaigns. So now constituents in the 14th District face another election, the third in four years. We are trying ot bring dignity and respect to our neighbors that's why THE VOICE decided to step up and host this event. This community is tired of being taken for granted.
City Council District 14 has been a launch pad for past elected officials and was the original seat of Latino Power when Richard Alatorre was elected in 1985, the first Latino on the council in 23 years. Other past council members who served this district include Art Snyder, Nick Pacheco, Antonio Villaraigosa, and current Councilmember Jose Huizar. Where are these people now-How easy it is for them to forget our community when they leave!
I remember seeing Nick Pacheco all of a sudden start showing up to community meetings in 2005 when he was running against Jose Huizar. After Pacheo's defeat to Huizar, he magically disappears again! I urge and invite the community to come and support and get involved with this election! You have everything to gain from it! Demand constituent service from our elected officials...If not we can take another poicture twenty years from now and see the same image we seen in 1970!!!
Anonymous said:
This is hilarious. Parke, is this what happens when one of your "Latino" experiments goes off the deep end. You created him, you trained him - now watch the slime come off on you. This is going to get really good. The only thing Huizar can hit Alvin on is that Homer Simpson memo. But he can't criticize Parra without implicating Skelton. Jose, I wish you had Shallman right about now. Alvin was acting under Parke's advise when that Broad/Burkle memo hit the press. The only thing Alvin was guilty of was assuming that he was gong to get the same support from these guys as Huizar did when he ran for school board. It's your formula Parke, you can't blame Alvin for trying.
And we are only in January. I hope the press is looking, this is the nasty, drag out, junk yard political fight you've been waiting for since 2003.

Say what you want about LAUSD students but they couldn't be as dumb as New York.
NEW YORK City College students and alumni filed a lawsuit against the school on Monday, claiming their First Amendment rights were violated when a sign naming a student center after a fugitive terrorist and a militant was removed.
The sign naming Guillermo Morales, a Puerto Rican separatist involved in a series of bombings in the city in the 1970s, and Assata Shakur, who escaped from prison while serving time for the 1973 killing of a New Jersey State Police trooper, was on the door of the center on the school's Harlem campus for 17 years.
Radical student groups picked the name of Guillermo Morales/Assata Shakur Student and Community Center after they began using the space following 1989 sit-ins over tuition increases, and the name stuck without interference from college administrators until recently, when the Daily News published a front-page article calling the name "a punch to the gut" to crime and terror victims.

Aye, an' shiver me timbers! Methinks me last post opened a can o' fishbait!
A word, if you please, Cap'n: Honor the lady and thy word. I tell ye truly: Hell hath no fury as a woman scorned! It doth not become a pirate to engage in swordplay whilst his pantaloons be 'round his ankles, placed there by a sword-bearing lady thou hast insulted!
Howsome ever, methinks me advice thou should honor: Were that I be in your boots, I would step away from associating the fairest lass Samantha with such a vulgar phrase ending in "slap".
Mayhap I would address the lass either directly or third person as the Lady Samantha. Aye, 'twould be a distinct honor and privilege for a humble man such as I to meet with the lady, as the occasion hath not yet commenced... or if it hath, we knew 'aught of the other.
Methinks I shall be in yonder pueblo hall on the morrow transacting some business. Cap'n and milady Samantha, I shall be near the galleon in the pueblo hall deck 'round, er a bit after, the noon hour. Would that ye both join me?
