Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Friday

Housing construction in Los Angeles County this year should remain on roughly the same pace as 2006, with between 23,000 and 26,000 homes, apartments and condominiums expected to be built, the California Building Industry Association reported today. Alan Nevin, the association's chief economist, estimated that between 10,000 and 12,000 single-family homes will be built in Los Angeles County in the coming year, while 13,000 to 14,000 multifamily units will be constructed.

We've covered the nonsense surrounding the opposition to Home Depot and other big box stores such as Wal-Mart. Often these movements are led by liberals who are shilling for unions or have some other irrational opposition to legal businesses. But that's beside the point. Martini Republic makes a good point about the double standards in coverage of Home Depot protests by the Los Angeles Times when the protest is in the City of LA and when it is not. Anyway, keep building those stores!

LA Voice reports that the City of LA is considering putting up free wi-fi hotspots in various parts of Downtown. Oh and those nodes will also have wireless cameras attached I guess just to make sure you're not blogging in Pershing Square.

Andrew at Here in Van Nuys just returned from an international trip and was embarrassed by what he saw at LAX's Tom Bradley International Terminal. Read the whole sordid tale here.

Blogdowntown has run across the usual fishwrap that comes from clueless urban planning consultants the city likes to hire. This time its about how to get more people to hang out in the historic core. I don't know what the city paid those folks, but looking at the product probably any high school senior could have produced the same concepts for free.

And finally the Daily News has a profile of The Chuch on the Way's Pastor Jack Hayford, the evangelical legend who took an 18 member congregation to one that numbers over 20,000 today. Unlike pastors who continually alert us to what God is personally telling them or are seeking promotion for themselves at every opportunity (like this guy and this guy), Hayford prefers to toil quietly, shunning the limelight and being of service to his flock.

Andrew at Here somewhat beat me to the punch. We just got back from Europe, and for a REAL disaster, fly American Airlines into JFK in New York. Mold all over the ceiling tiles, stains on the carpet, urinals covered with plastic rather than repaired -- it was a total disgrace. And that's BEFORE the part where they lose our luggage -- and that of 30 other travellers on the same flight.

You can absolutely go to the observatory free. There are 48 hour in advance tickets to the shuttle from the Greek Theatre. While they encourage people to hike or bike from that site, they actually have shuttle busses and they are free.

ANTONIO VILLARAIGOSA (53)
Following an exhausting race, the Mexican-American was chosen to be the first Latin mayor of Los Angeles in 133 years. His constant concern in improving the quality of life of Angelinos has made him one of the favorite politicians in the history of the city.

Someone said Antonio's approval rating was in the low 20%. Does anyone know where we can find out what his approval rating is??

El Cuy Cuy's wife is the classic example of a DV victim. They always recant and play down the assault. and to think she blames the neighbors.

....his wife Virginia got in front of a camera on Telemundo's nighttime newscast, lifted her shirt to show her middrift and say: "Look, I am fine. Look at my face. You can look at me. He's never laid a hand on me. He loves me very much." A little bit later, she told the Telemundo reporter the whole mess is to blame on their neighbors, who "are not Hispanos" and don't understand how "we" party. Then Cucuy's son Miguel came on. He showed the bandages on his chest and said: "We were celebrating and suddenly, an accident. Accidents happen. No one is perfect in this life."

WHEN CUY CUY EVENTUALLY REALLY HURTS BECAUSE DV ONLY ESCALATES SOMEONE SHOULD TELL HIM IT WAS ONLY AN ACCIDENT.
Here's a list of DV cowards:
El Cuy Cuy, Jim Lampley, O.J., Jackson Browne, Tommy Lee, Wesley Snipes, Jimmy Smits, James Brown, Mike Tyson, Tom Siezmore, Alec Baldwin, Sean Penn,

Why, yes! Just this morning, after my Shop Steward (United Sisterhood of Blog Brothers, Local 47) phoned in my morning political orders, I spent most of my morning trying to conjure irrational oppositions to Home Depot.

But I instead was focused on the deposed CEO, Nardelli, who got $210 million merely to leave, even while 50% of his employees toil at $10/hr for a $75 Christmas bonus, to sell goods that must be assembled by undocumented, unbenefitted workers in order for the local economy merely to survive.

Then I walked out to the backyard, where the collective's vegetable patch is, pulled up an onion, shouted "You have failed the revolution, comrade!" and cut it right in half.

Zuma Dogg and Matt Dowd should apply for a job with Done.

city hall insider - January 5, 2007 ---Keeping it in the Family

The Mayor’s Lieutenants like to keep it in the family. The DONE is about fill one of its two remaining Project Coordinator vacancies. If you didn't know that there were openings, it's because the department’s Chief of Secrecy, Lisa Sarno, didn't want anyone to know. Sources report that search is again focused on the 14th Council District.

Actually, under Roy Romer, I understand the plan was to focus on trying to jumpstart the younger grades, to get them off on a good start, before it's too late (as in the high school ages) -- And, indeed there is REAL, measurable progress to try and expand to the upper grades.

Zuma Dogg 100% agrees with this theory (that you practically have to set a cut off grade, and cut your losses -- and FOCUS a high concentration on the youngest of students -- then you measure the long term growth. AND WHETHER THE MAYOR SHOULD BE TAKING MORE CONTROL OF THE SCHOOL, OR NOT...

HERE'S ONE PR PRINCIPAL THE MAYOR'S SPEECH WRITERS AND CONSULTANTS MISSED: They attack Romer and LAUSD 100% across the board. EVERY SINGLE THING THAT HAS BEEN DONE HAS BEEN 100% WRONG, if you believe the words of the mayor's speechwriters.

However, I am a BIG fan of Marketing Warfare authors Al Ries and Jack Trout. And they taught little zd, "In order to get a positive, you have to give a negative." (So in this case, it's to get a negative, you have to give a positive.) The theory of self-depricating humor, to break the ice, in other words.

So, if ZD was consulting the mayor and helping to write his speeches, the mayor would say, "Unfortunatley, LAUSD has become nothing more than a huge beauracracy machine. It's almost impossible to hold anyone accountable for anything, and a lot of things have slipped through the cracks, or broken down completely in the process of education our children and therefore, our future.

The school system HAS indeed seen some measurable progress in recent years, with some of the children in the younger grades (K-?). However, this system has failed us for years. And now, it has become problematic to the point of crisis.

So thank you Roy Romer and the LAUSD school boardmembers; the principals, teachers and parents who have helped to start turn things around, simply by implimenting some policy changes in the elementary grades.

But the citizens of Los Angeles demand more than you are currently able to accomplish, given the current beauracracy inherent at the nation's second largest school system.

That's why, as Mayor of Los Angeles, I am doing everything in my power to help facilitate the school board's efforts, by going to Sacramento and saying, "Please, do whatever you can, by law, to allow me to do everything and anything I can, as mayor, to help build on the encouraging progress LAUSD has already started. (Cause mayor's speech writers: Whether you want to say it, or not...It's bad for the City, hence bad for the mayor, if no one wants to move to L.A. because the second biggest issue (next to how much gang violence there is), is how bad the school system is.)

So that's where you have to give a positive to get a negative. Check out all the books by Al Ries and Jack Trout. (They created ZD almost as much as Snoop Dogg and the Bee Gees did.)

When in doubt

Since the election, many people have written, claiming to have been duped by Measure R and its meaning. How were they duped? Did they not read the proposition, listen to the debates on the subject, take a few minutes to investigate and understand the information they received?

If they claim to have been duped, then they voted in favor of the proposition and have themselves to blame. Maybe the next time they go to the voting polls, they will be better-informed. Stop being led around by the nose and listening to what the politicians and self-serving groups tell you to do. These people have their own agendas and care less about your ideas and feelings. When in doubt, look to the past and you will see the answer.

This appeared in todays LA Daily News.

Social Security for illegal aliens
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
An agreement the Bush administration reached with Mexico on Social Security benefits would allow illegal aliens granted amnesty in the future to claim credit for the time they worked illegally.
The deal was reached in 2004 but never released publicly because it hasn't been submitted to Congress. The TREA Senior Citizens League, a Social Security advocacy group, recently obtained the document through a Freedom of Information Act, and said it confirms the group's worst fears.
...the group said what's important is what's not in the text: It does nothing to prevent undocumented aliens who later get legal status from receiving benefits for the time they worked illegally.

SLAPPing Back
Animal activists win money award after City Attorney files intimidation lawsuit
...the city’s lawyers just took a pretty big hit from the animal rights community. On December 14, the Animal Defense League – Los Angeles (ADLLA) announced it had been awarded a hefty $75,000 for an anti-SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) motion against the city. It’s the largest monetary award on record in California for an anti-SLAPP suit.

And it’s not the first anti-SLAPP case lost by the City Attorney’s office. In 2004, ADLLA received $15,000 in legal fees after winning on a similar appeal.
