Parker Center Costs Continue to Climb
It started off at $200 million, but the cost to replace the Los Angeles Police Department's Parker Center headquarters is about to double.
City officials are now calling for bumping up the cost of the project to just under $400 million.
That's a heck of a price tag. Considering when this old, dead Republican Mayor found a private sector project at the same cost that will contain nearly 25 times the amount of office space as the new LAPD center. Even if you say that's not comparing apples to oranges, lets say government can build at 3 times the cost of the private sector. At that price, the city should get about 4 million square feet of space. What will the new Parker Center hold? About half a million square feet.
The City could have placed many of the functions of the Department in existing city facilities in other parts of Los Angeles. There is no need in this internet age to centralize all operations. Other than to reward politically connected developers.
Imagine if the city had either made use of existing facilities (upgrading as necessary) or better sub the project out to a developer who could have got the job done for hundreds of millions less. Then, that money could have been into more officers and equipment.
But that's asking too much isn't it?

Call the governor and urge him to veto SB 160, a measure which would allow illegal aliens to get state financial aid while attending California's public colleges and universities. Another flawed bill pushed by cedillo.

Last lines of the story below. They are certain to get past the 1/2 a billion dollar mark. Your government at work.
The latest budget increase is not likely to be the last one, the two administrators warned.

It's late. The zuma lover gets vulger after midnight. Pathetic NC wannabe polticians can't fight a battle on the issues anymore. Need some nut who can distract us with questions about itchy balls. Where were we before the NC's turned into a pumpkin at 15 to midnight? We were discussing the very relevant subject of Zuma Dogg seeking sex. I stand with Gay Mailander. Let's give ZD Gonorrhea. Or quit complaining that we have bad sex. I know I will.

L.A. Councilman Tony Cardenas Is Fined $3,500 by Ethics Panel
From a Times Staff Writer
September 13, 2006
The city Ethics Commission unanimously agreed Tuesday to fine Los Angeles Councilman Tony Cardenas $3,500 for violating the city's campaign-finance laws by accepting seven contributions above the $500 limit.
The fine is equal to the amount of excess contributions found during a routine audit of Cardenas' 2001 primary campaign for the City Council.
The San Fernando Valley councilman agreed to pay the fine.
Cardenas lost to Wendy Greuel after a hard-fought campaign in 2002 to fill the vacancy created by the departure of longtime Councilman Joel Wachs. A former state assemblyman, Cardenas won another seat on the council the following year.
The seven excess contributions, totaling $1,000 each, came from the Official Police Garage Assn. of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles City Fire Department Chief Officers Assn., William M. Lasher, Gene A. Lucero, Funes Architecture and Architect Manuel Funes, ACS State & Local Solutions, and AMG & Associates.

STOP MILKING YOUR DISTRICT WITH THESE FUNRAISING FREE-FOR-ALLS, THEN PUTTING IN FOR "EVENT FEE WAIVERS". THOSE DAYS ARE OVER!
Now, let'sget back to NO on R -- City Council's Term Extentions/Lifetime Pension Guarantee.

Mayor this goes to show the stupidity of the clowncil members. LAPD is a world reknown law enforcement agency. We have the top police chief in the nation and these clowns can't get it right. What message do you think they are sending the rest of the nation when they don't give building a quality new headquarters for our brass? Only one bid came in because there is so much construction in this city taking place. Now they're saying the parking structure may have to wait or be scaled back. Idiots!! They waste over $15 million on special event waivers, find $40 million for a new elephant exhibit and one has died but the hell with our top brass and let them continue to be in a building (Parker Center) that is falling apart. Where is this money coming from that Antonio is using for affordable housing? Also didn't Hahn have an affordable housing trust before he left?
....Acknowledging that Los Angeles still is in the midst of a housing crisis, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced Thursday that he intends to put another $100 million into the city's affordable housing trust fund.
This marks the second year in a row that Villaraigosa has committed that amount to the fund. About $50 million will be used to spur construction of housing within the means of low- and middle-income earners and the other $50 million to build housing and support services for the homeless.
The mayor also did something that he hasn't done much of to date: stumping for the city's $1-billion affordable housing bond measure on the Nov. 7 ballot.

Homeless cash badly handled? Audit to check..LAHSA, lacking executives, said to be losing its purpose
The embattled agency that oversees $60 million in homeless programs for Los Angeles city and county is the target of a financial audit to determine whether it violated rules on use of federal funds, the Daily News has learned.
County Auditor-Controller Tyler McCauley launched the inquiry of the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority after the resignation last week of its chief financial officer, Lorraine Lynch, after just five months on the job.

Mayor Sam, how about a thread on that $160 million school being named after Miguel Contreras. The school board gave in to pressure and named the school after this scumbag instead of naming it after Edward R. Roybal. What more telling sign on the dismal state of Latino politics when this is allowed to happen.
Miguel was nothing more than a little Mexican doing big white labor's bidding. He was sent in to squash a Latino labor revolt at Local 11 and then he ends up marrying the leader of that revolt. His philandering ways were well known throughout the political establishment. He would never have ascended to his position if not for the testicular cancer that got James Woods. Remember, this is the guy who managed Kahtleen Brown's campaign in 1994 and was responsible for that 35 point flip after Brown was leading Wilson by 25 points. And this in the year of Prop. 187. His lack of personal discipline launched a new era of scumbag Latino politics and that is why we now have Antonio, Fabian, Gloria Romero, Kevin -- all scumbags.
By contrast, Roybal was the epitomy of Latino integrity in politcs. He was the first congressman to make AIDS a national issue, he was the one who got the subway funding for L.A., he was the one who led the fight for Latinos displaced at Chavez Ravine. Miguel died at a whore house while being blown.
Wake up Latinos!!
Anonymous said:
How ironic that this pro-Roybal post goes up on this thread. Roybal routinely took on Chief Parker when he was the only Mexican councilman over the LAPD's abuse of Latinos. This infuriated Chief Parker so much that he had a swuad car stationed down the street from Roybal's Boyle Heights home - everyday for 4 years. But Roybal never succumbed to that intimidation. His children - including Congresswoman Lucille Roybal were routinely harrassed.

Tony Cardenas and corruption? There's a no brainer. Do nothing Cardenas makes Latino politicians look bad as the only thing he's got going for himself is his latino blood.

Let's put an end to the 80 fake neighborhood watches and have an "adopt a CD14 neighborhood watch campaign". He said "our" "immigrant community."
What does that he mean my "our?" And why does he always avoid mentioning that it's specifically the illegal "immigrant community" that people are concerned about? My interpretation is that since 99% of the illegal aliens in L.A. are of the same ethnic origin as the mayor and his base, he thinks it's ok that they broke "our" immigration laws.

$200 million to $400 million, and I heard LA Times says problems with this developer in the past?
And now, because of this outrageous increase, LAPD will have to compromise on "tools of the trade" they need?
YIKES!
I saw Laura Chick at City Hall today, and I said, "hello" to her.
Maybe I can aks her to do an audit to see why the projected doubled in cost?
Walter Moore said:
The rip-off-o-meter is in the red zone. The price difference strongly suggests contractors, unions and others are being rewarded with excessively lucrative contracts -- paid for with YOUR tax money -- in exchange for campaign contributions.

Laura Chick can't afford to do audits. They are bringing in outside companies to pay outside audit firms to do the audits. We must be poorer than we thought. More bad news.
