Parker Center Costs Continue to Climb
It started off at $200 million, but the cost to replace the Los Angeles Police Department's Parker Center headquarters is about to double.City officials are now calling for bumping up the cost of the project to just under $400 million.
That's a heck of a price tag. Considering when this old, dead Republican Mayor found a private sector project at the same cost that will contain nearly 25 times the amount of office space as the new LAPD center. Even if you say that's not comparing apples to oranges, lets say government can build at 3 times the cost of the private sector. At that price, the city should get about 4 million square feet of space. What will the new Parker Center hold? About half a million square feet.
The City could have placed many of the functions of the Department in existing city facilities in other parts of Los Angeles. There is no need in this internet age to centralize all operations. Other than to reward politically connected developers.
Imagine if the city had either made use of existing facilities (upgrading as necessary) or better sub the project out to a developer who could have got the job done for hundreds of millions less. Then, that money could have been into more officers and equipment.
But that's asking too much isn't it?

The San Fernando Valley councilman agreed to pay the fine.
Cardenas lost to Wendy Greuel after a hard-fought campaign in 2002 to fill the vacancy created by the departure of longtime Councilman Joel Wachs. A former state assemblyman, Cardenas won another seat on the council the following year.
The seven excess contributions, totaling $1,000 each, came from the Official Police Garage Assn. of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles City Fire Department Chief Officers Assn., William M. Lasher, Gene A. Lucero, Funes Architecture and Architect Manuel Funes, ACS State & Local Solutions, and AMG & Associates.

....Acknowledging that Los Angeles still is in the midst of a housing crisis, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced Thursday that he intends to put another $100 million into the city's affordable housing trust fund.
This marks the second year in a row that Villaraigosa has committed that amount to the fund. About $50 million will be used to spur construction of housing within the means of low- and middle-income earners and the other $50 million to build housing and support services for the homeless.
The mayor also did something that he hasn't done much of to date: stumping for the city's $1-billion affordable housing bond measure on the Nov. 7 ballot.

County Auditor-Controller Tyler McCauley launched the inquiry of the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority after the resignation last week of its chief financial officer, Lorraine Lynch, after just five months on the job.

By contrast, Roybal was the epitomy of Latino integrity in politcs. He was the first congressman to make AIDS a national issue, he was the one who got the subway funding for L.A., he was the one who led the fight for Latinos displaced at Chavez Ravine. How ironic that this pro-Roybal post goes up on this thread. Roybal routinely took on Chief Parker when he was the only Mexican councilman over the LAPD's abuse of Latinos. This infuriated Chief Parker so much that he had a swuad car stationed down the street from Roybal's Boyle Heights home - everyday for 4 years. But Roybal never succumbed to that intimidation. His children - including Congresswoman Lucille Roybal were routinely harrassed.

The rip-off-o-meter is in the red zone. The price difference strongly suggests contractors, unions and others are being rewarded with excessively lucrative contracts -- paid for with YOUR tax money -- in exchange for campaign contributions.
Laura Chick can't afford to do audits. They are bringing in outside companies to pay outside audit firms to do the audits. We must be poorer than we thought. More bad news.
