Open Letter to Senator Gloria Romero

Dear Senator Romero:

It has taken days of pining on how to enter this fray of uncensored speech—so unused am I to speaking my piece. I have become so adept at censoring myself in order to survive in professional politics that self-censorship has become a bad habit. But now, from the blinding white of the empty page, your tortured face emerges in clear relief, giving me clarity and purpose.

We all have grown accustomed to politicians lying to us and to themselves. A politician supplanting argument with rhetoric is part of the background; we barely take notice. We all have grown used to political leadership trying to stifle speech and dissent, no matter how rational or well founded such speech and dissent may be, whether from the right or the left, from within the chamber or from the public out on the street. In these regards, that is, as a politician, you are in no way exceptional. You don’t do it that much better or that much worse than most.

But Ms. Romero, it is as much the sour air that you bring to a room as it is your naked and pained groping for the right spin, that shows the depth to which your seething anger—your malice—is your true inspiration.

You should know, that no amount of abusing your power, nor wielding of undue influence, no amount of slithering up alongside others whose stars are rising faster and further than yours, will make up for the vitriol that is boiling in your heart. There is something that goes way back to where it was encoded in the reptilian part of the brain, where the initial trauma is still lodged, that you must access and free.

So I say please, for all of our sakes—for the sake of California, the 6th largest economy on the planet—as you point out, the epicenter of which is LA, the ripple effect from which will shape much of California and thus a good measure of our world’s future—please, get some fucking therapy…

PS

And don’t you forget—yours isn’t a political victory if you have to stomp on people’s heads to get them to comply. That is what we normally call bullying. Did you know that there is curricula in our public schools designed to give students the tools they need to stem this destructive behavior? I can recommend some titles if you like. Quite ironic that LA’s kids should have to look no further than the jamming of the Gloria Romero Educational Reform Act of 2006 to see a good example of the kind of grown-ups we hope they never grow up to be.

L.A. Councilman Tony Cardenas Is Fined $3,500 by Ethics Panel

From a Times Staff Writer
September 13, 2006

The city Ethics Commission unanimously agreed Tuesday to fine Los Angeles Councilman Tony Cardenas $3,500 for violating the city's campaign-finance laws by accepting seven contributions above the $500 limit.

The fine is equal to the amount of excess contributions found during a routine audit of Cardenas' 2001 primary campaign for the City Council.

The San Fernando Valley councilman agreed to pay the fine.

Cardenas lost to Wendy Greuel after a hard-fought campaign in 2002 to fill the vacancy created by the departure of longtime Councilman Joel Wachs. A former state assemblyman, Cardenas won another seat on the council the following year.

The seven excess contributions, totaling $1,000 each, came from the Official Police Garage Assn. of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles City Fire Department Chief Officers Assn., William M. Lasher, Gene A. Lucero, Funes Architecture and Architect Manuel Funes, ACS State & Local Solutions, and AMG & Associates.

Mayor Sam who is this new woman posting? We all know Gloria is a bimbo and groupie of Antonio. She has no class and the fact that she went into another person's district for a photo op is shameless. These type of Latina women are an embarrassement. Just look how badly she dresses. She needs to hire a make over team.

Hey ghost, you hit it on the nose - Gloria has suffered some trauma and she can't get over it. First her kid's father or fathers left her. Then she gets her ass beat on by one of the Rodriguez Brothers - either Antonio, who used to be Antonio Villaraigosa's mentor or his little brothers Javier or Cokie. Cokie used to be Antonio Villaraigosa's brother in law, that is until Antonio's little sister left him after she got her ass beat. Notice a pattern here? Then Gloria goes for the very married Miguel Contreras and rides his ass all the way to the Senate. Then Miguel starts screwing Gloria's chief of staff Ruth Castro, before Miguel beat on her ass. Still the same pattern.

It is ironic that Gloria was authoring domestic abuse legislation but she never went after the men that beat her. I guess campaign contributions and expertise trumps all. Hypocrisy - over and over again.

Don't you think he/she meant not used to, such as I'm not used to seeing City Council pay attention to the public speakers?

I don't get the "personal issue" part.
