LANCC Election Roundup
This week we have been highlighting each candidate for Chair of the Los Angeles Neighborhood Council Congress. This is a major milestone for the Neighborhood Councils, and the movement of empowerment in Los Angeles. Indeed, a few 4th floor dum dums have been busy trying to undermine one candidate or another, or even the system as a whole which while funny to watch, indicates a level of fear in those that are, or plan to be, in power.
The election takes place July 8th. Candidates for chair are:
Senator Brady Westwater
President, Downtown NC
Previous post on Senator Westwater
Senator Charley Mimms
Chair, Greater Griffith Park NC
Previous post on Senator Mimms
Senator Jim Alger
President, Northridge West NC
Previous post on Senator Alger
We will report the results here tomorrow.
Blog away dum dums.

For the record.
Although I have many Brady Westwater slams on my blog .
ONe thing is for sure. When that anonymous poster posted that BRady westwater was going after me , I know that that person was talking out of their behind , because not once has BRady Westwater ever said anything derogatory about me .
He has been consistent in that.
Also for the record I am not the all powerful wizard of OZ, using strings and buttons to puppeteer anyone.
So there.
I have no say in who should be the neighbohrood congress president nor do I give a rats you know what in the matter.

Dear LANCC Delegates and Alternates, NC Board Members, and L.A. City Stakeholders:
Everything the LANC Congress does is precedent setting.
The LANCC Chair, all be it the interim chair, set a precedent endorsing a candidate. I had hoped that the candidates would individually make their own case and at the Congress we would as a group comment and deliberate in making our selection. Silly me, I guess politics isn’t just a word to describe others.
What we do need is to set far more important precedents; as in having codified, in ordinance or MOU, expanded NC rights.
I do not want the LANCC to be the back lot to the City’s charade of an act listening to NCs.
The one candidate that has proven that he can move the City bureaucracy is Jim Alger.
He has shown he can effectively interact with neighborhood councils in a leadership position across the City from the Valley to the Harbor and all points in between.
Although in retrospect it may seem simple to dog the DWP’s man Jerry Gewe’s footsteps as he plied the neighborhood councils with charts and projections in support of an 18% rate hike in early 2004. But like Edison, discovering what innovation would create light; Alger was the first to actually do the hard work necessary to make the DWP see the light. The DWP belatedly sat down with Jim and the other neighborhood councils he garnered, to sign a letter of intent to create a memorandum of understanding with NC’s.
Without that success we might not even have our own Congress. The Congress is still young and, yes, restless, although some say it is actually listless. Let us take that latent energy and purpose and rally behind a Chair to form a Congress that can remake city politics.
I, as I hope you do, want a Chair who has proven he can garner support throughout the City and can relentlessly pursue our shared goals.
In closing, knowing the other candidates well enough I can say they all have their strengths and are competent individuals in many areas. We are lucky to have them on our team. One is my go to guy on procedures and parliamentarian issues and the other knows the obscure downtown areas like no else.
My choice is Jim Alger, but regardless of whom the Congress elects I hope to continue working effectively with all.
Sincerely,
Senator Mike Cohen
RNC

I beleive Don Garza should run the LANCC.
He is a good candidate. ALthough he is not, it would be nice to have a breath of fresh air.
He outed Jaime Green for preying on homeless and young latino males by getting them high and drunk. And Jaime Green now sits , not elected, but selected by an outgoing board member as an artist board member.
Don Garza is a man who is not ashamed to stand up for what is right.
Yet Don Garza fought to see to it that even the homeless had a seat on the Neighborhood Council by suggesting and fighting to create that seat, yet did not seek any of the seats for wanting members of the Central City East Community to be able to participate as equal partners in the Downtown Renaissance . He also fought to make sure the Artists Downtown had an equal say and voice in Downtown and as a result Gallery Row was born from the beginnings of of the Arts Committee.
Don Garza has been recognized by the not-for profits Downtown for his tireless efforts at making his neighborhood better. He has created relationships with Council People and their deputies at City Hall , has forged strong relationships with the Business Community .
He Helped bring recognition to the forgotten Veterans of Skid Row in asking and suggesting to Council WOman Jan Perry that she help in bringing a steak Luncheon , which is cooked and prepared by the midnight mission a relationship which Don Garza has also forged with the MIdnight Mission.
Don Garza has lobbied on behalf of just development , he has championed the causes of the poor and disenfranchised of not only skid row , but hthe City as a whole. He was the first ever elected resident of skid row to a redevelopment project advisory committee and worked with the residents of both the new loft developments and the residents of the sro's while attending college ,and the homeless , to put in 1500 units of sro type housing in that plan.
Don Garza continues to advocate for himself and others in the Downtown Community.
He is an honorary member of the Central City Association , he was recognized by Downtown to Receive the very First Downtown Community Service Award, he was elected unanimously by the Board of Directors of the Downtown Los Angeles Neighbohrood Council to be thier Town Crier. And because of his work on behalf of the wilidfire relief fund to help those who lost their homes in the wildfires a couple of years ago , he was then recognized by the City in his role as the Downtown Los Angeles Town Crier and then given a resolution that states as such making him a full fledged Town Crier. Recognized around the world. Which Carol Shatz and the MAyor James Hahn announced atop the Standard Hotel when the new
Downtown Strategic plan was unveiled.
He continues to tirelessly speak on his own behalf and the behalf of the poor and even the wealthy who are treated unjustly.
I am glad I know Don Garza. He is inspiring and he does not give up and that I have learned from watching him.
I do know personally that he does tell people at city Hall to recognize those who do great work in their communities.
