LANCC Chair Elections - Senator Charley Mimms

Note: The Sister City will be featuring each of the named candidates this week leading up to the July 8th election. Each candidate was sent the identical questionnaire and in some cases additional information was found by us through readily available searches. The selection of which candidate was placed on which day is purely random. On Friday there will be a roundup of all 4 candidates.

***UPDATE - Senator Len Shaffer has dropped out of the race so there will only be 3 candidates listed.***

Candidate for LANCC Chair -
Senator Charley Mimms, Chair Greater Griffith Park NC

Charley is a trustee for SEIU Local 347, Chair of the Greater Griffith Park Neighborhood Council and current LANCC Senator.

Charley was sent a questionaire and did not return a response. According to the LANCC Website he did not turn in a candidate statement and an internet search turned up nothing, so there isn't much we can report. But we did say that each candidate was going to be given a day so here it is.

Can you kids not turn this thread into a bash-a-thon?

Blog away dum dums.

Charlie is a decent guy. I am suprised to see him running for this position. He has done a good job with his NC from what I can tell.

Oh god, Charley wants to be a somebody so bad! Charlie had dreams for running for Ferraro’s seat. He lost the election for the elected Charter commission. The problem is that the poor guy has no substance.

Wanting to be somebody isn't bad. At least he is doing the right thing, doesn't have a mental disorder and isn't attacking the LA times like Mr, excuse me, Senator Westwater.

Charley is a relatively quiet and reserved guy. Not sure how he would do.

People should attack the LA Times. Today they have a story about someone stealing the Anglina-Pitt baby photos on the front page of Calif. section. Inside the section they have the story of 3 people massacred by a guy with an assault gun in South LA. Mind you one of the people killed was 10 yrs. But the LA Times doesn't think that's more important.

That's my NC. Charley does a pretty good, gentlemanly job. Our meetings are parliamentary and peaceful. The NC has lots of committees that work with the City and various agencies, fairly peacefully. Rarely does Charley project his own agenda onto the whole NC.

"The problem is that the poor guy has no substance."

NCs don't lend themselves to much apparent substance. They are more brass tacks than vision.

Our NC is a little different than most. Any conflict tends to erupt not at an internecine level, but as a unified group against the City or goverment agency itself. Which I think is a healthy thing. Nobody wants drama at these meetings. The drama should take place in committees, and should be sorted out by the time the committee reports to the Council. That's Charley's style.

Charley rocks. He would be an excellent choice for LANCC. He is open and fair but he can be tough as nails when he needs to be. The best choice by far.

As a member of SEIU 347, I have known Charley to be a decent man who is fair minded and a "Scoop Jackson" like Democrat.Knowing that Charley is seeking a leadership role, gives me faith that the NC will continue to strive

Some from the LANCC want it to be "independent" of the City. However, the NCs are created by the City Charter and are dependent on the Board of Neighborhood Commissioners and DONE for certification.

NCs are therefore creatures of the city and need to get used to the fact that they are to work within the confines of the Charter, not outside it.

He is an LA City employee.

Charley Mims, Valley Construction Division Chief, City of Los Angeles, California

http://www.blog-city-hall.squarespace.com/who-is-the-worst-boss-working-/2005/1/26/to-view-or-post-comments.html

Since the subject is "Worse Supervisors" we should through in Chief Contract Ad Inspector Charley Mims. What's worse than a supervisor that doesn't supervise or provide leadership for his subordinates? Charley's too busy being a self proclaimed Union leader instead of doing the job the City pays him to do. Day in and day out I see that his lack of attention to his responsibilities to his City job requires that peers and subordinates have to continually do his work just so their assignments don't get behind.

The sad thing is he isn't very good at being a Union leader. He has been the President of our Los Angeles Professional Managers Association (LAPMA) for almost ten years. Under his reign the dues paying membership has dwindled down to approximately 35 members. The available pool of members is 400 plus. This lack of participation from the available pool of members should tell the LAPMA Board and SEIU President Julie Buthcher it's time for a change. It's time to get a new President. Change can be good and the change might get new members to join and become dues paying members. With new leadership LAPMA may become a real voice representing the managers of the City of Los Angeles. Maybe then good old Charley can get back to doing the job the citizens of Los Angeles pay him to do.
