Sheila James Kuehl is a former child actress and now is a State Senator representing the 23rd district in Los Angeles County and parts of Southern Ventura County.

As an actress in her youth, she is best known for her portrayal of the "irrepressible" Zelda Gilroy in the long-running 1950s TV show The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. Her own spinoff series as Zelda was cancelled (four episodes were filmed, but never aired) after rumors of her homosexuality circulated, the reason given being that she was too "butch".

Kuehl then changed her focus to academics and was accepted in the first group of women admitted into Harvard Law School. She became known as a feminist lawyer in her professional life.

Kuehl was first elected to the California State Assembly in 1994, becoming the first openly homosexual member of the California legislature. In the 1997-1998 legislative session, she was the first woman to be named Speaker pro Tempore of the Assembly. She was elected to the State Senate in 2000. In 2004, she was reelected to her position by with 65.7% of votes.

She has recently sponsored a bill that would require history textbooks used in California's public schools to highlight the contributions of gays, lesbians and crossdressers/transgendered people in California's history.

In other news, West Hollywood based Assemblyman Paul Koretz has announced he will run for Kuehl's seat when term limits force her out in 2008.

LA WEEKLY...Slapped AroundDowntown landowner faces inquiries over demolition pulled off without permits...Where’d they go? Richard Meruelo could be penalized over some missing buildings...Downtown land banker Richard Meruelo might not have asked the Department of Building and Safety or regional air-quality officials for permission to demolish toxic buildings on a contaminated industrial site, but he just might have to pay for forgiveness....
The department has issued orders to comply with city laws, and set a hearing for Wednesday afternoon to determine whether the largest downtown landowner and prolific campaign contributor violated building laws. If so, he could be prevented from developing the property for five years, according to a Notice of Hearing for Demolition Without Permit, dated April 7. AQMD) is also investigating, and has asked Meruelo for asbestos-waste shipment records and to explain why he failed to notify the district when he disposed of several structures containing toxic material at 1000 Alhambra Ave., also known as 1060 N. Vignes St., next to the L.A. County Jail, in the shadows of the elevated Metro Gold Line.
