Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Thursday

The City Council's Budget and Finance Committee voted 4-1 Wednesday to approve Mayor Villaraigosa's proposed $6.7 billion budget for 2006-2007. The budget calls for higher trash fees to hire more cops, along with savings to eliminate a $295 million deficit within five years. The Mayor also expects to combine savings through efficiencies and greater tax revenue to help make up the shortfall.

Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante has found an interesting angle to run for State Insurance Commissioner - he has gone on a diet. Cruz' point is that obesity is an epidemic with severe reprecussions for the health insurance agency. This old, dead Republican Mayor who has consistently fought this battle himself agrees. I've begun a fitness program of my own earlier this year, even got one of those George Forman grills. I may just pick up some of the low-cal recipes Cruz offers up at startwithcruz.com. Steve Lopez of the LA Times, "weighs in" on the whole story.

Joe Mailander posts an interview with this old, dead Republican Mayor over at Martini Republic. As if anyone was interested in what I have to say about the current state of the blogosphere, though do manage to indirectly compliment Kevin Roderick.

Laura Chick is holding another one of her "Women's Dialogue" programs. Click here for more information.

LA City Nerd has a couple of great photos of Wilshire Blvd. back in the early 80s. I definitely remember those yellow and black RTD buses!

Linda Menary - whose animal farm in the West San Fernando Valley was a throwback to previous generations and a delight to generations of kids - has died of a heart attack at the age of 61. No word on what will come of her huge piece of undeveloped land in Reseda, but new homes have to be calling.

The succesful public charter school chain, Green Dot, is opening up five new high schools in South LA. The schools are so popular and demand is outstripping the supply of seats, the operators are forced to hold a lottery Thursday. For more information, please click here.

THERE IS NO DEFICIT!!!
If you read the actual budget, rather than the Mayor's and the LA Times's characterization of it, you will realize there is no deficit.

On the contrary, revenues are up $700 million above and beyond last year's level, and that is without any tax increases. California's real estate market has resulted in a massive infusion of revenues.

So please stop buying or repeating the fiction that there is supposedly a deficit, and that we must therefore raise taxes. Not only is there no deficit, there is a SURPLUS. DWP alone generates $200 million more per year than it spends -- even if you include its Broadway Shows. That surplus goes to the City.

For more details, read all about it at: WalterMooreBlogspot.com.
