An Historic Monday

President Bush is expected to announce at 5:00 p.m. on Monday that he is deploying approximately 10,000 National Guard troops the border with Mexico.

President Fox of Mexico reportedly called Bush from Bratislava, Slovakia to complain about the "militarization" of the border.

The National Guard comprises military reserve units controlled by each state of the United States, equipped by the federal government and subject to the call of either the federal or the state government.

The U.S. Constitution provides, in Article IV, Section 4, as follows: "The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened), against domestic Violence."

Blog as you have never blogged before, Brain Trust. This is a HUGE day for the future of our country. Will the invasion be stopped, or not? Will those already here illegally then be evicted, or amnestitized? Record your profound insights for all posterity right now!

P.S. Please note that the Guardsmen in the picture are getting off a Southwest Airlines plane.

Close the borders.

Close the borders.

Close the borders.

Then we can talk about a way to deal with those who are here.

10000 Troops to guard 850 miles of border.
That works out to about 12 soldiers per mile, or one soldier every 416 feet. But wait, the soldiers have to sleep, and eat! So lets say theres 2500 troops per 8 hour shift!
Thats about 2 soldiers per mile!
If I was an illegal, those are pretty good odds that I will make it across the border!
This is nothing more than an attempt to boost poll numbers and still not seriously address the border problem.

GWB has NO credibility on illegal immigration or border security. He has proven he can't be trusted on these issues. This is most likely just a Karl Rove ploy to grab some headlines, attempt to temporarily placate those want real border security, while ramming amnesty down our throats. REALLY shut off the flow of illegals for about 5 years or so and set up the permanent infrastructure to do this FIRST.

Anon at 8:01 - Excellent quantitative analysis. Seriously. Plus, our troops will probably be spread even thinner, because many soldiers will presumably be tied up in logistics. After all, someone has to do the cooking, maintenance, etc. Let's hope surveillance drones, Hummers, etc. will help make up for the scattering of the troops.

I find the deployment very, very encouraging. And though I think Bush will try to use this to push amnesty, I think the American public may very well insist on deportation. If 20 million people can cross into our country in 10 years, they can darn well cross back. Bush's ploy reminds me of the adage: he who tries to ride a tiger will end up inside it.

People with guns guarding our borders?

Doesn't seem quite as ominous to me as the government making a data base of phone calls and tapping my phone...

But that's just me.

Texas will be next. Gov. Perry is sympathetic, but he'll just blame it on Bush (his Rep. friend).

This will be a deterent for illegals not wanting to be caught. They're so uneducated all they need to know is the national guard will be waiting for them. They won't know where they're posted, how many or anything else. Its about time. 5 other countries have strict enforcement laws except the US. I'm tired of the billions that are spent on the illegals. That money could be used for education, traffic, healthcare etc.

Why is it that no one seems to remember that we DID give amnesty in 1986 (Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986) and that those who said it would only encourage MORE illegal immigration were proven right by the increase in those numbers in the following years. Having seen their trailblazers get amnesty now the followers expect, indeed demand as a "right" amnesty for themselves. Amnesty is not the answer.

As a democrat I agree with Bush decision. The problem has escalated, only solution is to have guards both South of Border and Canada/US border.

This is smoke and mirrors. The President has already said it is a temporary measure, which makes sense as he is not intetested in doing anything serious about securing the borders. (Big business likes the cheap labor.)

I find it interesting that the Govt. is willing to capture phone records of U.S. Citizens in the name of Naitional Security, but they presume that every one of the millions of illegal aliens are here just to find work. As if a determined terrorist could not figure out that the U.S./Mexico border is essentially wide open.

More from the Karl Rove amnesty push airing tonight (when is this guy going to be indicted):

"You'll hear the president talk tonight about steps that we're going to take to increase our security along the border immediately and to deal with the other part of it, which is we will not be able to secure the border unless we have a temporary worker program," Rove said.

Is it ironic to anyone else that massive, peaceful, demonstrations asking for a bit of help from this nation finally led to everyone freaking out and sending a bunch of gun-toting military types down to the border?

If they had rioted, would we now have a massive amnesty program in place? What is an undocumented migrant to do?

I agree with Ubray again.

We're fucked up here. Our priorities are skewed and we need to find someone with a real plan.

Not Bush, not Walter Moore, not CA politicians.

We may have given amnesty 20 years ago, but then we didn't stop the problem. So what good did the amnesty do?

Fix both problems you assinine, want-it-all politicians.
