Affordable Housing . . . On Wheels

RV or not RV? That is the question -- in Burbank, anyway. Over 100 RV owners showed up at a meeting of the Burbank Traffic and Transportation Committee to oppose a proposal to limit overnight street parking of these 21st Century Conestogas.

According to the Los Angeles Daily News, a man named Stan Hyman drove his 21-foot motor home through Burbank weeks ago, and stuck fliers on 42 RV's parked in various neighborhoods to alert owners about the proposed restrictions. The meeting was important to Stan "because I happen to have a 40-foot RV and I physically am not able to prepare my motor home for a trip in the time frame that they were suggesting." He does, however, intend to retrieve the 40-footer from storage and park it in front of his home. (Can you say "curb appeal?")

Robert Reel, the service manager of the Benchmark RV Center in Sun Valley, says there's no more room in the inn: there are 280 RVs in storage, and 25 more on a waiting list.

Does anyone else see a potential for a "Lost In America" win-win situation here? Winnebagos as affordable housing? It's not like you have to put gas in them once you park, after all.

See you Sunday, Brain Trust.

RV's are already being used as "affordable housing" in many neighborhoods around Los Angeles. While doing code enforcement in South L.A., I encountered this situation often...it wasn't rare to stumble upon a back yard with 2 or more RV's being rented out to families. I had the pleasure of telling the occupants that RV's didn't meet code and that they would have to find somewhere else to live.

Thousands of people gladly live in what could be considered Third World conditions because they can't afford decent housing in this town. If you were able to see what I have seen, you wouldn't regard the issue of "affordable housing" so flippantly.

If we had seen what you see? Hello! We see it every day! That's why we want illegals out! They're doing to L.A. what they've done to all of Mexico!

I am so sick of this 'affordable housing' shit!!

Get rid of the 20M illegals in this country and there will be no need for this crap!

Mexico is dumping it's unwanted illiterate, diseased, mestizos on us and the asshole Mechista 'mayor' is supporting them courtesy of American taxpayers.

If it wasn't for the God-damned illegals, we wouldn't 'need' 160 new schools and 'affordable' housing! If it wasn't for the God-damned illegals, we wouldn't have our hospitals shutting down and we wouldn't be spending 20B a year supporting them.

The asshole 'mayor' would love to declare 'blight' on the whole city so that he could spend the rest of his life greasing the dirty palms of his re-developers and keeping his filthy illegals working the construction jobs. We have to declare 'blight' on the 10M illegals who are destroying our city!

No one has the guts to enforce the laws! If San Bernardino is successful in their proposed legislation to go after landlords, LA will be next.

Wake up and smell the latte, Angelenos! Voter apathy and illegal votes are what allowed the Mexican scumbag to take over this city. If you don't vote him out, you have only yourself to blame. You will rue the day you allowed him to turn this city into a cesspool. Isn't everyone already disgusted with him??????

To clarify, I have seen that the property owners who maintain "illegal" dwellings (e.g. RV's, garage conversions) are not all Latino, nor are the inhabitants of these dwellings. Some are Latino, some are White, some are Black, some are Asian. The desire of people in this city to provide substandard "affordable" housing, and the desire of people to live in it, knows no racial bounds.

I have also seen that the process for building "legal" dwellings is so convoluted and bureaucratic that it prevents the construction of decent and affordable housing in neighborhoods that need it most.

It is very easy and convenient to blame the current housing crunch and other land use issues on illegal immigrants. It is also entirely wrong. 100 years ago, Asian immigrants from China and Japan were considered a scourge on Los Angeles and the root of its urban problems. 50 years ago, Black immigrants from the American South were considered a scourge on Los Angeles and the root of its urban problems. Today, Latino immigrants from Mexico are considered a scourge on Los Angeles and the root of its problems. This history shows that the problems of Los Angeles, its land use, and its governance, are more complex and don't lend themselves to the percieved sins of racial and ethnic groups.

If we are to get "the illegals out," as you advocate, who would you be able to blame all of our city's problems on? Demagoguery makes for poor policy making. People of reason do not rely on such short-sighted scapegoating, nor should they tolerate it.

I beg your pardon...but you are wrong! Illegals ARE the problem here. And the majority of illegals are Mexicans from Mexico.

I have owned rental properties in LA for the past 25 years, and I can tell you that the neightborhoods are overrun with illegals and drop houses. Landlords are getting $500/head and there are 10 to 20 per house. The garages are converted and the RV's are all over the place.

They are 99% MEXICAN!!!! I know!!!!

They are defrauding our social programs and their spanish speaking only kids are ruining our school systems.

The gangs are running around with their machetes and terrorizging everyone. MS13 hit West Hollywood a couple of weeks ago.

The reconquistas want to annex CA and the other SW states.

The Mechista 'mayor' is robbing this city blind and his council members are aiding and abetting.
Why do you think whites are leaving in hordes???? Taxpayers are being robbed and get NOTHING for their money. Can't even fix a pothole.

Who wants to send their kids to LAUSD? Only a Mexican.

I could go on an on, but it's an exercise in futility with people like you!

Wake up!

If you can't afford storage for your RV or you can't afford property for your RV that has RV access, then you have no right to own one.

They don't belong parked on city streets and they don't belong in yards being used as rentals.

Follow Burbank and get rid of them.
