Jim Hahn's Mexican City

The latest cause du jour of the right wing nut flank – who have been making some good points about illegal immigration until now – is the silly uproar over an even sillier billboard put up by a third rate Spanish language television station.

The billboard in question, touting the news of Channel 62, has the words “Los Angeles, CA” with CA crossed out and replaced by the word “Mexico.” Al Rantel, Doug McIntyre and even Larry Elder have devoted significant airtime to this – not because it’s a substantive part of the serious problem we have with illegal immigration – but it fires up the old white people who love to call talkradio and rail about Mexicans. I know, I am an old white guy. Its almost as if they think this billboard has moved LA to Mexico.

Key to the discussion is a remark made by the station owner that “LA is a Hispanic city.” That really riled up the wing nuts.

Where this impacts the mayor’s race is that it presents yet another example of the wing nuts’ folly in supporting Jim Hahn. Antonio Villaraigosa, in condemning the billboard said “Last time I checked Los Angeles in California, not Mexico.” On the other hand, Jim Hahn has said many times “Los Angeles is a Mexican city!” (One step up on the outrage meter from what the station owner said in my view).

Do the wing nuts know that Jim Hahn had already moved LA to Mexico, way before this television station and their goofy billboard?

Antonio all of a sudden doesn't want to be associated with Latinos. He doesn't want to be seen with them cause it might upset his white supporters. His disctrict is flowed with illegal vendors and he does nothing about them.
The Assembly majority leader is Antonio Villaraigosa, ex-MEChA (Moviemento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan) activist and former president of the Southern California ACLU. Assemblyman Villaraigosa was the only Latino elected official to speak at the Latino March in Washington, D.C., where he touted the legislation promoted by the Latino leadership in Sacramento and spoke fervently about the right of "undocumented people" to free medical care and education through college. He demanded another amnesty for those living in the U.S. illegally.

Last May, Speaker Villaraigosa joined Mexican President Zedillo in addressing the California Legislature. Although both men are thoroughly fluent in English, they both made their speeches in Spanish. Then Villariagosa stood and began the Chicano handclap. Without knowing what they were doing -- as calls to their offices confirmed -- the rest of the legislators joined this spirited display of ethnic nationalism and started clapping, too.

Any high school or college student in Southern California has heard this sound -- clap-clap, clap-clap-clap -- and understands its meaning. Like displaying the Mexican flag, it is the MEChA trademark clap and hails Chicano power.

I'll bet ADV wishes he went by Tony Villar right about now. He would sound less ethnic which is part of his plan and a diss to those of us who are Latino/Chicano/Mechistas/etc.

“Last time I checked Los Angeles (was) in California, not Mexico," says ADV.

HE OUGHTA KNOW... he's spent more time EVERYWHERE else but his own district for the past two years.

No WONDER those hotel giftshop owners (who can't remember his name), love him SO much...

So you have to be a "right wing nut" to be concerned about massive illegal immigration, the overtaxation of financial and physical infrastructure, hospital closings, shortages of affordable housing, and 1 in 4 serious felons in L.A. County jail being "undocumented?"

Count me in, then (I ain't "white" and always "thought" I was someehere just left of center).

OH well, I guess in ADV's socialist world, most of the city would qualify as "right wingers."

And we'll see just HOW true that is in 19 days, when he slides into the footnotes of city history as the guy who blew large leads twice to a "boring" candidate.

So what's you're point? That a clap by our next mayor is going to some how annex Califoñya to Mexico?

If a billboard by a third rate station can get this much coverage then they have made an excellent investment in their marketing plan. How many people do you think they have now convinced to pay their station a visit? How much more money do you think they will now be able to charge for commercial spots?

Why is it that right wing nuts understand that the language of business is the all mighty dollar and all of them advertise that "Si hablo español"? Why is it that they will all hire Jose and Pedro over John and Charlie because they can pay them less for they same work and the Latino worker won't argue? Why is it that they will hire Lupe to take care of their kids and Tino to mow their lawns and not ask what station they listen to? But when one of these folks daughters or sons, son in this case, gets an education from an ivory tower school and then becomes the equivalent of a prime minister, California being the 4-5 largest economy in the world, he suddenly becomes un-American and less than qualified.

Antonio ran and oversaw the budget of the greatest State in our country. He had more influence to shape public policy and direct resources then Bush did as governor of TX. Look at Arnie, the current Speaker is forcing him to back peddle on every single point of his statewide strategy. As Speaker, Antonio didn’t give California away and he is not going to give Los Angeles away.

Your fear mongering is not going to work. The "Chicano" hand clap does not mean that Antonio is going to change immigration law or policy for the Country let alone Los Angeles, which last time I checked was still part and governed by the United States. I would be more worried about Bush bringing back the guest worker program than of Antonio granting amnesty to undocumented immigrants.

You should be turned into glue Mustang. ADV blew it as speaker. The school bond he supported hurt LA. He was like a kid in a candy store, never able to say no to rampant spending or to the honeys. ADV's more familiar with the other kind of clap than the Chicano one.

Mustang -- that was an incomplete sentence...

"Antonio ran and oversaw the budget of the greatest State in our country... "

...INTO THE GROUND!

(Finish your sentences before you jump to conclusions, or no dessert).

Remember the BUDGET CRISIS!

Remember the BUDGET CUTS!

Remember the RECALL (state, not CD14)!

(They're not only attention-deficient, but historically challenged over in ADV's camp).

Would that be Waldman of Hertzberg and Levine fame? How interesting that the Kerry event on Saturday is at Valley College, not far from his office.

Couple of things:

Someone seems to be implying that I am Stuart Waldman. Now that's a laugh. I am way better looking than he is.

Now, as far as if Stuart is involved in the Valley College event, I don't know but he probably is. So fucking what? His involvement in the Vilar campaign is well known, he even hosted a freaking fundraiser for him with some Valley GOPs and others.

But regardless of Stuart, LAVC is a good place for them to go logistically. If you Valley hating Hahn lovers from LA ever came out here, you would know that.

Yes Mayor Sam LAVC is a great place to go. I'm from the Valley( The West Side Of it Thank God) and the valley beaners live mostly on the east side of the valley Pacoima, Arleta, Panorama City North Hills and the fukin jewish liberals in sherman oaks and studio city, those beaner and liberal jewish votes are Antonios any way. They were his last time in 2001, no new votes there for 2005. This Kerry shit endosement won't fly among WHITE voters (that would be the Pierce College area). Tony the bean can not get the white conservative valley vote, and thats who votes. The West Valley and the Pierce College Area is Ronald Regan counrty. Infact old Ronnie paid us sevral visits to Pierce College back in his hey day as president.

Villaraigosa MIGHT;

Hahn CAN'T.

It took Nixon to go to China, and it took Sharon to get close to peace in the MidEast.

Hahn has had his chance. If Villaraigosa can't cut it, his career will end up in the dumper like Hahn's.

Villaraigosa's career has BEEN in the dumper for all of the current century... lost to a BORING mayor, settled for a poor district (and abused it), and now is losing ground again -- just like 2001.

Boy needs to retire and reminisce about his good-old radical days while he can still remember them.

So why do you erase my comments supporting the reelection of Mayor James Hahn?
