Kam and Cookies

cookie jarIn today's LA Times we find out that Kam Kuwata got his hand stuck in the cookie jar. Yesterday I asked the Hahn campaign to respond to this blog, they did not.

Fine, but the real question is, if Hahn stopped all PR contracts, what is this he's given to Kuwata?

And even if he has this contract, why hasn't Kam been given one check from the campaign?

More questions, more scnadal, more reasons to not vote for lil jimmy.

I suppose its stories like these that are supposed to bury Tony Villar.

So who is paying Kam???

By "hand in the cookie jar" then, you mean the mayor's discretionary fund used to pay for professional services, over a year ago, for services unrelated to the campaign (see where this is going?)

Answer these questions re: your original post vs. Times account: Is "PR" the same as "Lobbying" or (as Kuwata called it) "gathering information." You asked about PR contracts being stopped... was this a PR contract? "PR" people don't generally do "lobbying" or "information gathering"... they do R to the P. Sounds like this $46K was also a drop in the bucket compared to the millions Hahn was trying to get the state to stop stealing from the city... a pretty good investment if it worked in any form.

Try this, read the Times story from the BOTTOM up and see if this isn't really just someone (there AND here) trying desperately to fit a square PR peg into a round non-lobbying consultant hole. (And nothing says this has to do with the campaigning for re-election, 12 months or so later). If Kuwata is so rich he doesn't need to bill the Mayor's campaign for his latest services, yet -- that's their deal. The $46K a year ago certainly isn't covering current campaign work, or he's the cheapest consultant on the block.

Then read the terms used by city officials to describe their reactions to how the deal was worked... we "recommend" - we're "concerned" - mayor has "wide discretion." No crimes, no scandals, and the only "cookies" the guy got were for unrelated services rendered, long ago, in the best interest of the city's financial future. The dots you're trying to connect here only draw a picture of someone fishing, and pulling out another red herring.

(Besides, no one has been ABLE to "respond" here for most of the last 24 hours. . .)

Re-read the article, MEAT/Chief. Your noted speech writer, Ace (word)Smith, was paid $106,000 by the taxpayers to vomit quotes about bullfrogs for Mayor Richard Riordan.

Mayor Hahn did not hire outside PR for his office. Kuwata's contract was for government relations. Clearly the city's lobbyists needed the help, because Sacramento theives have been stealing from the city's treasury hand-over-fist for the past 10 years to refinance their budget mess.

I'm sure Ace can explain this, given the PR wisdom he gained while billing LA taxpayers during the Riordan administration.

Gee Whiz, you guys are no fun. Everytime Chief finds somebody dirty on Mayor Jimmy's side, there's somebody who's done the same stuff on the ADV side. Maybe this "new guy" who wants the job isn't an upgrade after all?

Meat if Tony is such a great leader, and visionary please answers these two question?
Why are 10 out of 15 councilmembers who work with Tony everyday supporting Hahn?
Second, if Tony has such great vision what major policy or change had he made in the city in 2 years?

We have already deduced from his mind change and not abiding by his covenant with the people not to run for the mayors office that he has his mind on even higher office. In my opinion the question is a valid one. Why would 10 out of 15 councilmembers endorse Hahn instead of V?

Well considering these folks have to run a city and they need someone who will be dedicated to tthe city and not be in office spending time seeking higher office , I beleive they know that it is better to work with somoene who will be around and focused on the citizens of los angeles just like these folks who just got re-elected have to do and have done for the past four years.

Would you like to find out in the middle of his tenure he will be running for another office. They have business to conductat city hall and so we need a mayor that will not be leaving us . HAving an affiar with the city and then toss it away like tony v has already done with the 14th council district

FROM HUMMINGBIRD:

You blokes missed the main thrust of the story.

"Hahn's office paid for Kuwata's services from a discretionary fund set aside for professional services. But it did not draw up a contract until after Kuwata had submitted invoices for the completed work, nearly a year after he took the job.

"Both the city attorney's office and the city controller, who pays the city's bills, said Hahn's office had failed to follow city contracting guidelines."

Keep this in mind: Mr. Smith had a contract with a lame-duck mayor. Mr. Kuwata had a contract (after-the-fact) with a mayor seeking re-election.

This is a distinction that does make a difference.

Who am i? Am i jessica garrison or chief parker? Good lord!

All anyone has to do is look back at what chief parker wrote about antonio before the primary to realize i was not chief parker.

As for this Kam scandal, why is mayor hahn paying Kam to play in sacramento?

Kam should be labeled as a volunteer for the campaign if he is not on the payroll. I don't care if Kam is not getting paid, i don't think he's worth a dime. So i am happ to see hahn and i have the same opinion of kam.

As for endorsements, Yvonne Burke a woman that knew jimmy when he was a kid, supported Kenny when he was around. Gave Janice the nod during her run for charter commission, (failed) congressional run and her city council campaign. A woman that endorsed and supported virtually every Hahn family campaign since the very begginging. Even supporting Jimmy's uncle when he ran for office.

She has now come out for Antonio Villaraigosa -- who cares about those 10 councilmembers, Jimmy Hahn's virtual Auntie has no more to Hahn.

Blog away

MEAT Hahn got 23% of the black vote even after your gang banger boss attacked him for months. ADV got 15% even with Bitter Bernie endorsement. IF the blacks are still pissed off at Jimmy for getting rid of Bernie and bringing in the best police chief in the nation then the hell with them. Burke and her loser husband are the reason KING/DREW had to be closed. MEAT what is ADV stand on the 3-12 issue? Does he agree with Bitter Bernie? I can hardly wait to find out. I'm positive of one thing. If ADV sides with Bernie all hell will break loose citywide against him. You can TRUST ME on that one.

Hummingbird, buzz off... most of the comments earlier were about the original poster's (Parker) "scandalous" twist on the original story, trying to portray it as a broken promise regarding PR contracts. (That's FUNNY and ADV supporter talking about other people's promises!!)

I didn't miss the focus of the story at all -- nothing was done illegally, nothing was even worthy of being looked into. At worst, it was ill-advised, and tardy paperwork - like filing taxes late. The mayor's discretionary fund, because it doesn't fall under the same guidelines as funds where contracts that has to go out to bid, is a different animal.

What you wonks all seem to fail to understand is that all this bitching by the Controller Chick, especially now that she's made her "preference" for mayor official -- is absolutely a non-issue to 99 percent of the people in this city, especially if you're hinging your hopes for the loser of 2001 to win this time on contrived "scandals" like this. To most of the people in the city, this all just looks likes infighting between the "CEO" of the city and the "CFO" who doesn't like him. It's piffle... plus, if the ADV supporters keep crying "WOLF" every time they see Hahn standing near something that just turns out to be a kitty cat, then 99.9 percent of the voters are going to stop listening to any of the "corruption" cries, including things that SHOULD be investigated.

(That's good campaign advice... I'll send Antonio's people a $46,000 bill for just that -- later). He can take it out of his state senate campaign fund after he blows everything currently collecting on another losing attempt to be mayor.

The deal cut between Burke and Villaraigosa to support Wesson isn't the only one Tony was busy on. He's cut another deal with the current school board president to get Jose Huizar into his 14th Council District seat after Tony becomes mayor. Villaraigosa doesn't care what the people want, only what he wants.

I use to like Jose Huizar until I noticed him on the stage with ADV. Guilt by association. When is the stuff about ADV getting arrested and stabbing a person coming out? About him beating up a man because of domestic violence. Someone should research these stories.

Yvonne doesn't need Antonio to support Herb to fill her seat; it is already a lock. It is not "if", it is "when".

Yvonne cares about Los Angeles, and she knows that Jimmy is incapable of leading it forward. He is the proverbial "limp d___".

It took Nixon to go to China, and it is taking Sharon to dismantle the settlements to make a peace with Palestine. Jimmy has been unable to say "no" to Julie or Miguel. Antonio can and will do it, after all, what does he owe them after he beats J. Kenneth Hahn this time?

Jimmy has neither the black vote or the Valley vote, thanks to the secession. He cobbled them together to beat Antonio last time, aided by a bullsh#t letter issue..The editors yawned when Jimmy tried to raise it again.

It is all over but the shouting. Jimmy is going down, and the rats are leaving the ship.

Yeah and ADV thought that by having Bitter Bernie endorse him he would get more black votes and that didn't happen. How can anyone say ADV is a good leader? Look at his own damn district. Over flowing with vendors and illegals. And today's LAT states a major development in his own community is illegal and where is HE? Again, let's see what turns up "All in Timing." People who voted for ADV are now realizing they DON'T want a Latino mayor. Reality has set in.

Let's see here:

LA Chamber = George Keiffer, Jimmy's butt boy;

Laura Chick = Women and The Valley;

Yvonne Braithwaite Burke = Women and South Central;

Herb Wesson = South and West LA;

Bernie (in the wings) - Police credibility and more South Central.

I guess Jimmy's doing a lot better than we think...Meat must be right, he's beating us all, or he just beating it himself?

It must be wonderful to be 29 and know everything.

Absolutely correct previous poster.

......The political free-fall is so bad that there are as many Latino Republicans as blacks in the California Assembly. That’s only part of the reason why the majority of black voters, despite their professed political loathing of a white politician such as Hahn, still may not back a progressive Latino candidate like Villaraigosa.
