Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (vee-yah-ry-GOH'-sah) is planning to make an announcement about California's gubernatorial race.
The mayor's spokesman Matt Szabo (ZAY'-bow) says Villaraigosa will appear on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer" at 1 p.m. PDT Monday. The spokesman would not elaborate.

He's going to promise (again) to serve out his full term as City Councilman for the 14th District.
(Oh, and to "love, honor, and obey until death do us part").
Best guess, he's going to announce that he won't run, and give as the reason that the City is in too bad a shape financially to do without him (not mentioning that he couldn't win, under any circumstances).
It's the political equivalent of breaking up with someone, proactively -- in advance of when you know they're going to kick you to the curb -- just to save face.
DAMN, he's going to jump out of the Governor's race, and his potential opponents all had slick glossy mailers planned with the Los Angeles Magazine "FAILURE" cover already inked up and ready to print.
if AV is going to announce that every body but the latinos in la hate him, he can save it. we already know this.
Ahhhhh.
He's going to come out of the closet.
I hope he announces he's returning the name Raigosa to it's rightful owner.
Now watch what DiFi does. Is she running? Probably. Is there a deal? Definitely. Will AV endorse and give her Latino votes? Oh yes. Will she win? Good chance.

The US Senate is the only decent place for Antonio to go. He's never going to be Governor or President. Makes no sense to try anything like going back to the legislature, County Supervisor, etc.
He probably could not get elected outright to the Senate but if Gov DiFi appointed him he'd be in a good shape as the incumbent come the actual election time.
The Senate life would be well suited to Antonio. Lots of perks, women, donors, fancy parties, Washington lifestyle, no term limits, etc. He could spend the rest of his life there.
10:10 am and Higby in his 10:30 am posting are correct:
1) Villaraigosa is going to announce that he's not running because he needs to stay in LA and help get it in the right direction.
2) Getting appointed to fill DiFi's vacancy if she decides to run for Governor and wins is the best way for Villaraigosa to move up. Given the timeline, he'll be into his second term and make the argument that he didn't leave LA hanging completely, and go on with his life.

10:10am, that would seem to be the obvious move based on the realities of the situation, but you can never under-estimate the mayor's shamelessness. It's now, or never, anyway, at this point. And he doesn't care about boos at stadium crowds, because it's all about the behind the scenes deals with unions and groups and money.
So logic may be out the window in substitute of shamelessness.

Switching to a federal office will allow him a clean break, as well. He can begin running as "Villar" for the first time.
I don't know folks, if AV goes for the senate, he's got nowhere else to run to. How would you like to have to be the staffer that tells this leapfrog "ADV" politician after he's been in office for 18 months that there's NO OTHER office for him to flee to to avoid accountability -- as he's always done before.
If he goes fed, he has to upscale, too.

Yes, he'll give the excuse that he is needed to stay and fix the city.
But be assured that whatever he does will be whatever benefits him personally the most. He loves the good life. Since he likely couldn't get a real job, having a political job is the best way to achieve his goal.

I'm not at all supporting/suggesting AV for Senate - just speculating. And my comments are from his perspective it's a good thing, not ours.

His rightful last name is now Villaraigosa. It was changed legally and no mom would want to have her kids and the father of her children with different last names. She's not trailer trash.
