Rush to Judgment- Here we go again!
Here we go again- pundits foisting the latest trend du jour- Without a clue.
Monday night, by special invitation only, Mayor V., Sen. Gloria Romero and school boarder Yolie Flores-Aguilar will host a special screening of a "major film" at the downtown library titled "The Providence Effect." The documentary tells the story of Providence St. Mel school in Chicago, which "for the past 30 years has sent 100% of its graduates on to college."
Sounds great. Maybe they know something we don't. Let's check it out.
So we did. And here is what The Wonker's wonks found out...
Providence St. Mel (PSM) is a PRIVATE school -like the one the Mayor sends his kids to.
PSM has a dropout rate of 44%- (maybe worse than LAUSD)- kids don't finish and they get kicked out either because they're are failing or they can't afford the $4700 tuition. No wonder they send "100% of its graduates on to college."
PSM tests kids and rejects any student who isn't smart enough. If they do get in but can't afford it, they can get grants if they clean the school.
Is it me, or does this offend the sensibilities of anyone concerned with inclusive, public, free education? Like those fun little puzzles that we all tried to solve when we were kids, this begs the question-"What is wrong with this picture?"
Either these so-called leaders want an exclusive, selective public school system, or they just don't spend enough time getting the facts.
I think they need to do their homework before they turn in their report.

Yolie Folres Aguilar ??? I thought she was Yolie Flores Garcia now. Something about wanted to be just like Monica Garcia. Good luck Yolie, you've got about 300 pounds and four darker shades of brown to go before that happens.

I wonder if The Mayor, Romero and Flores-Aguilar will also be handing out free copies of last Sunday's LA Times - the article by Mitchell Landsberg on Oakland's American Indian Charter School?
Probably not. Here's a publicly funded charter school that does not cherry pick students but takes all comers. The school's scores are at the top of table, and shock horror; the school teaches traditional core subjects intensively and does not pander to self esteem based programs.
I urge you to read the article and maybe forward a copy to the elitists who will be attending the 'private screening,' which is no doubt also a fundraiser.

We have a poor school system in this city because of one thing: the Latino and Black cultural mind set that studying, working hard, and learning is uncool.
It's "too white."
Until this changes across the community, you can be certain that we will always have this problem in Los Angeles. The change has to start at home, no matter how much money you pour into the school system. Shit, LAUSD's budget is larger than the city! What does that tell you? It's not about money! It's about overcrowded, culturally sunk neighborhoods that love single motherhood, fatherless childhoods, and Boys in da Hood.

to 7:37, we people of color LOVE the color of money as much as you do. to be educated has no color line, what a stupid thing to say, you or ignorant pig / piglett.
