Happy Riot Day!

Time for more Special Event Fee Waivers! Tuesday's City Council will see approval for nearly $5,000 of your money for a "commemoration" of the LA Riots.

What do you do to celebrate Riot Day? Burn Korean markets? Loot electronic stores? Beat up truck drivers? Just curious.

And which Clowncil members are behind this? Are you surprised?

MOTION (WESSON - LABONGE) relative to declaring the Commemoration of the
17th Anniversary of the L.A. Riots on April 29, 2009 a Special Event (fees and costs absorbed by the City = $4,409).

It's not a celebration.
It's important to not repeat the mistakes of the past. This is a good waiver and we should support it.

In this climate there are no good waivers.

And seriously - what mistakes? The mistakes were the lawlessness of those who participated.

We can teach about that WITHOUT spending taxpayer money.

This just goes to show what a bunch of FUCKING LOSERS WE HAVE IN COUNCIL. We should RECALL ALL OF THEM. I've never heard the disgust and anger towards this particular group of idiots.

I was in another country on business when the riots started. I was ashamed that people of my City behaved so badly. What do we have to celebrate? The communities have never recovered and "celebrating" reminds me that Hitler was just an experimet in socail adjusting.

To Joe B, only the old "remember" the "mistakes of the past", the young must be reminded of the pain. Why? Let each parent teach their children respect for the rights of all people, property, etc. and we will have less graffiti, thefts, murders, riots, etc.

7:11, there you go again with your stupid contempt for learning from the past because that's for "old people" whose opinions are irrelevant. You're the real deadwood of society.

Having said that, it's unclear what the focus is of this remembrance event.

7:11- "Let each parent teach their children respect for the rights of all people, property, etc. and we will have less graffiti, thefts, murders, riots, etc."If that happened we wouldn't have what we have now. But I don't think this expenditure is a very wise decision by the Council in today's budget condition.

One of the big mistakes of the past was the unpreparedness of the law enforcement agencies, mainly the LAPD, for the reaction to anything other than a "guilty" verdict for the trial on the "Rodney King" case. Even with that lack of a specific plane, the lack of an appropriate and immediate response allowed the initial disturbances to snowball into a condition of anarchy.

The "repeating the mistakes" might have been the May Day Melee lack of plans for crowd control and response, lack of training for what conditions could be foreseen and not using the best (more experienced, better trained)officers among all available choices, and just a bad handling.

Not so much individual officer issues as system-wide and management lapses in quality of supervisiona and application of resources.

If $5 grand would get the job of teaching children what 7:11 comments would like, then that's a bargain. But that money would probably be better directed to assuring us that police will be able to handle matters appropriately to protect us - and there's more likelihood of that happening than changing values on a wholesale level.

In all the video outtakes on the rioting and lawlessness on the streets during the first night of the 1992 riots, You don't see one policeman or police cruiser: LAPD or LASD anywhere.

Where did they all go? Did all the cops just disappear? Nobody call 911?

Just the T.V. helicopters high up in the sky using long distance video cameras broadcasting mob assaults, looting and burning.

All the local T.V. stations were broadcasting the mayhem on Florence and Normandie. I remember, because I kept switching the channels.

Not a cop to be seen. I remember the helicopter shots that scanned the horizon. Not a police car to be found anywhere.

The message was pretty clear that the police were gone and the street criminals could have a field day. They did.

LAPD chief Daryl Gates was at a party that night in the Westside if I recall the stories correctly.

Joe,

I totally agree we need to be reminded so we are not doomed to repeat.

However, NO FEE WAIVERS!

We need to be reminded of the names and crimes of everyone who went to jail including the folks who beat Reginald Denny.

And sure - include the old Nazi Stacey Koon as well on the list.

If you saw the show Sober House looks like Rodney King has finally got his life together and is headed into doing some good things.

The funniest damn thing about that show was that of all the "patients" Rodney King and maybe Andy Dick were the two more responsible elder statesmen of the bunch, if you can imagine that!
