Shameless Pandering, CD 5 Candidates at War, & Marys Big Payday

Shameless Pandering

Today I happened to be at Olvera Street around 2pm when I saw some of the most shameless political pandering I have ever seen in my life. It was so bad it was embarrassing. A large crowd was enjoying some Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Live music was playing, people were dancing and having a good time. Then came the mood-killing effect of City Councilman Jose Huizar. He grabbed the microphone and started to play Master of Ceremonies.

"Hey," he said in Spanish "who is from Mexico?" A huge cheer.
Continuing the pandering, he rattled off the names of different states.... eliciting a cheer from various crowd members. When he got to "Districto Federal!", there was huge cheer.
(I didn't know so many residents here had come from Mexico City, or D.F. as they call it there).

Huizar then turned and introduced and handed the mic to Jack Weiss!!
(I was stunned to see Jack Weiss there..)
Weiss tried to bumble his way through some campaign fluff in Spanish, but it sounded awful.
"Me llamo Jack Weiss...." . The crowd was deadly silent in response.
I really dislike Jack Weiss, because he is my City Council Member and he is terrible.
But today I almost felt a tinge of compassion for him. An ounce of sympathy.

"My God," I thought, having an epiphany, "this is what the end of a political career looks like."
Weiss -- bumbling around in a language he doesn't speak -- desperately pandering to a group that didn't give a damn about him or his fight for the City Attorneys Office.

Huizar got the mic back and said a few nice things about Weiss... kind of half-apologizing to the crowd.
The translation from Spanish was somewhat to the effect of "Not bad for a white guy, huh..?"
The crowd didn't care. They wanted the mariachi music back on again.

The whole thing was painful to watch.

CD 5 Candidates at War

Things are getting a bit prickly between Paul Koretz and David Vahedi in their 5th Council District race.
Koretz and Vahedi are bombarding 5th District Residents with mailers.( Check the close up detail on the photo above ). I have received about five or six from each of them. Each one gets a little more defensive and hostile.

Koretz is leveling baseless accusations and charges at Vahedi that he is somehow responsible for the bus bench advertising here in Los Angeles. Vahedi is countering that Koretz is a lifelong politician who will say or do anything to get elected. Vahedi is also saying that Koretz moved into this district just to run for City Council. Not sure about that charge, as I believe that Koretz is a lifelong City resident...but the charge of "Career Politician" is hard for Koretz to avoid.

I wonder why Koretz is bashing Vahedi so hard... when Koretz claimed he was so confident about winning just a few short weeks ago.

Marys Big Payday

It looks like one of the favorite Mayor Sam posters that people love to bash is having a good week.
Mary Cummins-Cobb looks to be getting a big settlement from the City for a sexual harrassment case against former Animal Services Director Ed Boks. The City Council, handing out money like candy, (as is their usual behavior) seems to have agreed to fork over $130K to Cummins-Cobb. Writer Rick Orlov had the front page story on this for the print version of the Daily News. You can read the whole legal document here, with all its interesting details. Cummins-Cobb seems to be one of those "Conspiracy Theorists" who believe that multiple employees who work for the City were intent on destroying the life and career of a woman who started out with the City ...as a volunteer .... cleaning animal cages. ( Clearly, she had to be stopped .)

Her charges against Boks may or may not be true...I don't know. But I would have preferred that she sue him personally instead of making all the city residents pay for the mistakes of a flawed employee. But, this is Los Angeles, and irresponsibility and unprofessional behavior is generally the rule, not the exception.

Congrats Mary! The City should only have to write about 3,000 more parking tickets to pay you off !

What Weiss is doing is called electioneering. I think. Whatever it's called he's running for a city- wide office and would be criticized if he didn't go all over. And I suppose he was expected to try a few words in Spanish. The people there should be following the election, not just what's going on in East L A. Meanwhile Trutanich carpetbagged into San Pedro from Long Beach just to run.

Koretz isn't a real carpetbagger since he grew up in the district, but he was a city councilman for West Hollywood for years.

Weiss was totally vindicated by the Erwin Chemerinsky opinion piece showing that Trutanich's stonewalling about his clients was wrong and deceitful in many ways. He's got Magic whose opinion is far more respected in the black community than Shaq's since he's a hugely successful businessman with even theatres and a shopping center named after him. The big union money and vote that helped Ridley- Thomas over Parks hasn't even started yet. Trutanich's shameless deceit about himself and Weiss is all coming out too. He's the one who will end up running back to the hole he crawled out of.

Phil,

You are way too compassionate to be in LA politics! Feeling anything for Jack Weiss (other than delight that his career is OVER) shows that you really are too a fair person for the back-stabbers that run our city.

Notwithstanding Erwin Chermerinsky's blatantly biased and partisan opinion in the Times, Jack's had little else to make him feel good about his impending departure from public life.

The rattle of handcuffs must be echoing in his dreams (nightmares?) as investigations into Weiss's illegal fundraiser seem certain to derail his political future. Did I mention that it was an illegal fundraiser?

The "Weiss bloggers" have been completely unable to respond to Weiss's flagrant violation of City Ethics law other than by denigrating Trutanich. But name-calling Trutanich does not excuse or explain Weiss's misconduct.

Weiss has a microscope right up his "you know what" right now. He attended a fundraiser hosted by Kelly Candeale, a city appointee, in direct violation of a law he voted for. Weiss can't even claim he did not know Candeale was a city appointee because Jack voted to appoint him - Candaele was (wait for it) a Mayor appointment so of course Jack approved the appointment.

So what is Jack's excuse for being caught with his hands in the cookie jar? So far, there's being no explanation, When Trutanich nailed him on KCRW's Which Way LA debate, all Jack would say is that "there was a problem and we fixed it."That's like a bank robber saying "we stole the money from the bank, but when we saw the cops outside, we dropped the swag bag and surrendered."

If there is an "Anonymous" Weiss blogger out there who can actually explain why Jack Weiss felt a liberty to ignore a law he voted for, please give it your best shot. But simply trying to denigrate Trutanich won't work.

And all the Weiss stuff about Trutanich defending criminals, well, does that mean that whoever has the hapless task of defending Jack against the indefensible charges of violating campaign finance laws, is as bad a Jack?

Respond to the charge please, tell us why Jack Weiss should not be charged with a crime for illegal fundraising? Come on, tell us!

You can't. Your golden boy has wet his pants in public, the media is all over it, and Jacko is going to get some real experience of the criminal justice system when he's charged with a crime.

What Weiss has been doing for 8 years is electioneering. He's been an absentee Councilman who is hated by his own constituents which is why he never campaigns at home. He's safer saying "me llamo Jack Weiss" on the Eastside than he would be saying "I'm Jack Weiss" in Westwood or Encino. It must be frustrating for Weiss that his support group is now limited to paid campaign staff or family members who are compelled to blog for him since no one else will. Adios Senor Weiss.

Paul Koretz was a pompus blowhard from his days at Hamilton High School who is a career pol and has never had a real job. He is from the mindset that government's job is to micromange everyone's life. He comes from the same mindset that by passing more laws, programs, regulations on business everything in life will be fixed. While in the State Assembly he was behind a resolution that President Bush should be impeached, which aside from being unbecoming is constitutionally irrelevant. You can expect more nonsense with the Clowcil with him in office. Maybe they can top the deep thinkers at the Berkeley council who passed a resolution a few years ago outlawing military satellites passing over the city.

We have had decades of leftist rule in the cities, states and schools, all now in the verge of ruin. People like Kortez promise more of the same. More huge budget deficits, more crappy schools, more businesses leaving for less oppressive tax and regulation regions, Read today's column by George Will in the failure of liberalism in California, now a model for the country under the Obama admin.

Enough for now...i gotta go. And a great man, Jack Kemp, a true fiscal conservative who advocated personal liberty and lower taxes is still dead. Also, a great football player back in the day.

Phil-
I have to hand it to you... you are consistant.

Having said that-- an regarding the runoff for the CD5 council seat-- I would still be curious to know why you opted NOT to run for City Council, and instead run for Mayor-- which you yourself admit, almost in a boastful way, that you never had a chance at winning.

I believe during the Mayoral race, you said you were the best leader among the group of candidates. Let's just say for the sake of discussion, that that's true. Then why would you choose to enter a race you knew you would lose, rather than take a shot at the CD5 seat? Let's not overlook the fact that Koretz and Vahedi earned their way into a runoff, and both of them got less than 7,000 votes each on election day. That's not a ton of votes.

Your decision process is questionable, Phil... which (I think) calls into question your ability to lead-- at the very least.

Opting for a sure loss over a possible victory is-- well let's just say-- lacks keenness of mind.

Ed Boks was a co-defenant along with the City. He was personally liable for any judgement. His golden handshake was the City assuming all liability and costs in the lawsuit. He hired his own attorney to negotiate those terms for himself. The City is the one who released Boks of the costs, not Cummins. Boks and the City just lost another lawsuit last month, drunk driving the city car and having a car accident. It went to trial and the city lost. The settlements come out of a special fund for lawsuits. The City stated that they are broke so all settlements must wait until July 1 for payment.

This is the second sexual harassment payout in the Dept in two years. After an employee sued Commander Dave Diliberto for sexual harassment, HE got a promotion, raise and an award in City Council. She got $99,000. You want a promotion, raise, award, go sexually assault someone. LA City rewards bad behavior. The Mayor even gave Boks a very nice letter of recommendation besides two months salary. Boks is now claiming medical disability so we'll all be supporting him for the rest of his life. How's that for fucked up?

This is nonsense. Paul Koretz grew up in a generation that believed government service was a noble calling. So many of the selfish people we have today have changed the way most of us look at elected officials, but Paul Koretz is a throwback to the days of people making sacrifices to help their community. He has run for several offices, but even his opponents say he is very hard working and tries to put the people's interests first. Vahedi has also spent a lot of time trying to set himself up to run for different offices, but you don't see a whole lot of people that worked with him on political projects supporting him. The only people who have endorsed his campaign are homeowners groups who have just met him in the last few years (when he has been trying to line up support for this race) and haven't seen him in action through the years when he has been an active supporter of politicians that most would identify as being puppets of developers and special interests.

Hi there, Anonymous 10:35AM.

You haven't got the guts to identify yourself, but you assume that anyone criticizing Mr. Weiss is me. Very flattering.

So, Anonymous 10:35, what's your answer to Jack's illegal fundraiserHow can you spin the fact that your guy got caught red handed breaking the law? Because it's a fact, isn't it?

You have no answer because there is no answer, just as Jack, when faced with the question will have to take the fifth amendment. By the way, do you even know what the fifth amendment is? It goes like this "I respectfully decline to answer that question on the grounds that it might incriminate me."INCRIMINATE! Yes, the failed politician cannot answer a Grand Jury question as to his presence at an illegal fundraiser because he not only knew that Kelly Candaele was an appointed City Commissioner (Weiss voted to approve his appointment), but Weiss cannot say he didn't know a City Commissioner cannot hold fundraisers because Jackass voted for that law too.

When Jack arrived at the fundraiser and saw Kelly Candaele there, he could have said "Stop! This is illegal, we must stop immediately. Don't take any money."

But Jack Weiss didn't do that. He carried on glad-handing all the fat-cats who paid $1,000 for the privilege of buying favor with Jack.

And Jack took the money, knowing that it was illegal, against the law, a crime.

Jack doubtless thought that by the time anyone finds out about this crime, the election will be over and he'll just have to pay a fine. That's what happened last time, with Alan Casden's laundered campaign contributions.

But this time the LA Times were on top of Jack. The Times called the Mayor's Office and said "What's up with your appointed commissioner illegally fundraising for Jack?"

And you know what? Within 4 hours Kelly Candaele had "resigned" and Ace Smith had to return the $20,000 that Weiss illegally took.

Anonymous 10:35, what is your response? A personal attack on me? That's it? That's all you have?

You ask me "what do you hope to get from it?" I'll tell you. I hope to get a City Attorney who is a decent, honest and incorruptible. That's it period.

The very notion of public service for no other reason than the benefit of the public is entirely alien to you, isn't it?

Why else would you defend a criminal act committed for the benefit of Jack Weiss, in the presence of Jack Weiss?

What's in it for you Anonymous 10:35?
Are you looking to be appointed as a commissioner to replace Kelly Candaele?
Will you sell your ethics for $125,000 a year?
That, of course, assumes you have any ethics. Anyone who supports Weiss in the light of his involvement in this crime has no ethics, and no place in City Hall.

Now answer the question please - how can you support a City Attorney that turned a blind eye to a crime committed for his benefit in his presence?

For the rest of you, I predict there will be no substantive response. Just some personal attacks on me, or Carmen Trutanich because at the end of the day the Weiss campaign is dead in the water. Jack's upset so many people in Los Angeles that nobody wants him anymore. Except maybe Rod Blagojevich, he needs some company right now.

If you go to the City Ethics website and you look at Koretz’ contributions recieved for this run for City Council, you will see that he has taken money from:

- LOTS of developers

- marijuana dispensaries (the City is working on an ordinance to either ban any more of them, cap the number, regulate their locations, etc…and Koretz appeared on the cover of a Marijuana Magazine prior to the Primary election…poor judgement indeed or desperation). By the way, we had about 200 before the moratorium, another 200 opened during the moratorium...that's about 400 dispensaries...other cities have complete bans.

I am NOT against the use of marijuana (or legitimate medical sales of it); what I am against is politicians taking money from people before they decide their fate...it creates a conflict of interest. Koretz is making legal contributions look like bribes.

- nightclubs and bars (the Councilmember effectively controls the outcome of land use applications in their district, especially related to alcohol and late hours, and potential "nuisance" establishments)

- taxicab companies (they’re regulated by the City, and are currently asking the City to park overnight on our residential streets along with their rooftop ads)

- LOTS of city employee unions (the City is facing Bankruptcy because of underfunded pensions, and is negotiating with the unions on pay, benefits, etc...if Koretz does not seek concessions, then we will pay higher taxes, fees, and fines, and suffer deeper cuts in basic services)….

He’s a special interest politician.

Don’t believe the hype !

Go to:

http://ethics.lacity.org/campaignfinance.cfm

and then press the “Search Contributions” link.

Under candidate/officeholder (top right), select “Koretz, Paul”, and at the bottom, under filing/election, select “2009 Municipal”

You will get an alphabetical list of Koretz' contributions. The 3rd entry is ACE Outdoor Advertising, received at the end of September for the maximum amount, $500.

Go through all the pages…it will shock you.

Follow the MONEY, not Koretz' junk mail!

If you google some of the people and entities, it’s easy to find out that they’re developers !

PS: When Koretz was in the Assembly, the legislature voted on SB 1818, which "piggybacks" on the local zoning in each CA city. SB 1818 is a huge give-away to developers, including density bonuses (get to build more units) and "incentives", like additional height, larger FAR (floor area ratio, which is basically the volume of the building), reduced setbacks, a "free" parking incentive (reduced parking requirement)...

SB 1818 was supposed to be about creating affordable housing, but it dramatically reduces affordable housing in most instances...it's a scam. For example, a developer will tear down several apartment buildings with a total of 50 affordable units, and build a monstrous luxury condo building, which towers over the other buildings on the block and has insufficient parking, with only 2 affordable units. These "SB 1818 Projects" destroy the character and scale of our neighborhoods and residential streets.

Everybody is against SB 1818... homeowners, renters, R3 folks, R2 folks...even R1 folks can be impacted and have fought the implementation of SB 1818 in our city.

Koretz was a Councilmember in WeHo for many years and dealt with zoning. He was an aide to Yaroslavsky (who endorsed Jerk Weiss) and I believe another councilmember in LA. The point is that Koretz is very familiar with zoning and particularly our local zoning...ignorance is no excuse here!

How did he vote?

He abstained !!

F*@#ing special interest, career politician...

I'd like to see Vahedi expose all of this in his mailers, so we can send Mr. Koretz back to Sacramento...as a lobbyist.

WHAT WE NEED IS MORE SOLID FACTS AND LESS "HERE SAY" IN THE D.A. RACE. BY THE WAY, JACK WEISS STINKS. HE HAS NO INTEREST IN ANYONE'S OPINION BUT HIS OWN AND THE MAYOR. HE ALSO HAD 4 YEARS TO PROVE MY POINT AND HAS. IN THE 5TH DISTRICT "VAHEDI" SEEMS TO HAVE YHE EDGE OVER "KORENZ" THAT'S IF YOU ASK PEOPLE IN THAT DISTRICT. THEY BOTH HAVE SOME PLUSES, BUT VAHEDI SEEMS LESS IN LOVE WITH DEVELOPERS.

The comments left on the Daily News and Daily Breeze blogs about this sordid Cummins-Cobb affair are extremely uncomplimentary to Mary Cummins and Ed Boks. Good riddance to both and it cost us only $130,000.

9:56 There are no 1034 exchanges anymore. Individuals can write off 250K, couples 500K. All improvements are deductible. If there was profit of $500K, write off $250K and more for improvements, presale costs, sale costs... There could be not one cent of profit at all.

I don't understand Shameless Pandering. All politicians speak up at public events. I've never heard of it not happening.

I don't know Jack Weiss, but I think it's admirable that he was speaking a second language. What I find embarrassing is that apparently that crowd doesn't. Every reason I can think of that someone living in a country wouldn't learn the language of that country, says something negative about that person.

I thought Ed Boks left because he didn't go far in that no-kill plan he had. And he rescinded the free neutering programs he had set up.

Silly me, thinking it was just his job performance.

It seems like Weiss is "Damned if you do Damned if you don't." He is under a microscope, by every single entity in LA- homeowners assoc., TIMES, blogs, trutanich, everyone...
I feel like Weiss does correct himself when something goes wrong and he says "yes this was wrong..." But with Trutanich we never know anything because he doesn't tell the truth every time he is asked a question he gives a different answer which one is the real answer, if any
I seriously don't trust Trutanich; you can say all you want that he doesn't represent the NRA but he does because he benefits from them by his firm, he gets a percentage of their blood money. And he has repsented Men accused of sexual assault
