"OLD GRAY HAG" endorses Trutanich, Vahedi, and Pearlman

The "OLD GRAY HAG ON SPRING STREET" has bestowed its editorial blessings on Carmen Trutanich, David Vehadi and Nancy Pearlman for the elective offices of City Attorney, City Council District 5 and Los Angeles Community College District Office 6 respectively.

Excerpts below and links to full editorials.

Carmen Trutanich for City Attorney

Trutanich has represented alleged polluters, and that's a good thing: The city of Los Angeles is one of the nation's biggest polluters, and taxpayers need someone who knows his way through the regulatory process to ensure that cleanups can move forward while penalties remain manageable. But he also was a groundbreaking environmental prosecutor, building up experience and know-how that would serve the city well in its aspirations to become cleaner and greener.

David Vehadi for City Council

Vahedi is often portrayed, for good and for ill, as the outsider candidate. He makes much of the fact that he hasn't held elective office before, although he did run four years ago in an unsuccessful bid to unseat Councilman Jack Weiss. But for an outsider, Vahedi impresses with his encyclopedic knowledge of even the most obscure zoning regulations, Environmental Quality Act provisions and parking policies. He is among the breed of homeowner activists who can match wits and quote Municipal Code passages with any elected official or bureaucrat.

Nancy Pearlman for LACCD Board of Trustees

Yet Pearlman is the stronger candidate of the two. Nakahiro, a lawyer who grew up in Boyle Heights, is an energetic and likable community activist, but he has yet to develop a deep understanding of the community colleges and a well-honed agenda for improving them. Pressed in a meeting with The Times' editorial board for details on what the district needed most, Nakahiro responded that students should understand the governing board's role at the colleges. In truth, most college students care little about such matters; they rightly want to know whether they can land a spot in an over-enrolled class, how to get academic help when they're floundering and why the prices of textbooks are so high.

My thoughts? I don't know if Rob Greene got it right and Newton capitulated, or Newton got it right and Bob Green capitulated. I suspect the latter. But whatever happened, they got it right. Good job by an editorial page that has widely missed recently.

Three years ago, I began severely criticizing the Times editorial page. I said it should criticize elites and be the voice of the people, rather than vice versa. These endorsements reflect that sentiment. It's about time.

Joseph, your point is well taken. Weiss's represents elitists, nobody else.

Have you seen the report of his illegal fundraiser last Monday? It was held in a $16M Beverly Hills mansion behind locked gates. Weiss took campaign donations in the presence of the co-host, Kelly Candaele - a mayoral appointee. It's illegal for a city appointee to engage in political fundraising, and Jack know it because he voted for that law. Jack also voted to appoint Candaele. Can anyone think of any reason why Jack decided to take the money and run? How about that he usually doesn't get caught until after the election.

But this time, Joseph, the LA Times called the Mayor's Office the day after the illegal fundraiser and asked why a city appointee was fundraising for Weiss. Within 4 hours Candaele 'resigned,' and Ace Smith issued a statement saying the illegal donations would be returned.

The Times did their job in outing Weiss. Weiss has no defense and given his all round condemnation of Trutanich for defending criminals, one wonders whether Weiss will have to defend himself in this matter.

Well done LA Times

10:55, read Chemerinsky's opinion 5/1 which proves you wrong and cites why, as well as documents that when challenged to support his stonewalling, Trutanich gave alleged Calif. code that he either totally misinterpreted or misrepresented because it was irrelevant (he lied or was ignorant, in other words).

Or THE CODES 'DID NOT EXIST.' He even just made them up. Hoped his loud theatrics would fool voters.

Lots of other reasons given not to vote for Trutanich too. Opposite of what the Times' utterly unsubstantiated endorsement says. It's all clearly partisan, and an effort to claim what they perceive is the blue-collar conservative vote to make up for their lost readers. Instead they're only selling out one base in a losing and sure to fail effort to capture another.

Weiss and Koretz will win, because this time there will be a more city-wide turnout. Experience and proven open record of people who are on the side of the voters when it comes to the issues, over plans by those with no public record. Trutanich's dissembling and lies coming apart to reveal who he really is and what he's done disgust many people, and that's why they've made such vicious attacks against Weiss getting it out.

Though Vahedi at least has served on volunteer groups, and he and Koretz are much closer in many ways, but he's too beholden to angry retro NIMBYs.

You refer to Weiss' "proven open record."

Please elaborate. What has Weiss accomplished for the City of Los Angeles in eight years as a councilmember?

The floor is yours.

May 04, 2009 12:35 PM

Weiss was all about details of his record but you Trutanich fanatics, Zine the haters, don't listen and deny it even when it's documented.

So it's pointless to talk sense with you -- like Trutanich you just want him/ supporters to lay out details and shriek your dumb sound-bites to "refute" them. To distract from himself.

Weiss doesn't have to answer to a carpetbagging phony like Trutanich -- people not blinded by hate and their own cynically opportunistic ambition are listening and supporting him. And are very turned off by the real Trutanich.

Dear, dear 1 p.m., if there is one thing that Mr. Trutanich isn't and that's a carpetbagger. His family's positive presence in the Harbor area is so widespread and beloved in our community that it seems as though every other person we know is either a Trutanich, related to a Trutanich, goes to the same church with a Trutanich or has gone to school with a Trutanich. Mr. Trutanich's personal ties and assistance to many local charities is legend.

As far as his defense of those who have allegedly broken the law, I may not feel warm and fuzzy about a potential criminal, but I dearly love our Constitution and form of government that allow an individual legal representation in a court of law. I'm told that Mr. Trutanich is VERY, VERY GOOD at what he does. I enthusiastically look forward knowing what a fantastic job he will do in reforming the City Attorney's office and finally creating viable legal representation for our city. God, do we need him now!

Anonymous 1:00PM - Answer the question? What is Weiss's record? There isn't one is there?

Also, as you're are so consumed with taking the moral high ground with Jack Weiss (sic) please can we undecided voters who are not really sure about either candidate, have a clear concise answer as to why Jack Weiss attended an illegal fundraiser on Monday April 27?

Please explain why Weiss voted for LA Municipal Code 49.7.8 which makes it illegal for City employees, such as Commissioner Kelly Candaele, to hold political fundraisers, and then violated that law on Monday night?

Please explain why Weiss did not stop the illegal fundraiser - he was there with Candaele and he know Candaele was breaking the campaign finance law?

Please explain why Jack took the $20,000 raised at the illegal fundraiser instead of immediately returning it?

Please explain why it took the LA Times to break this story, why didn't Jack Weiss report his own misconduct?

No. All you will do is rag on about Trutanich. Here's the difference. The worst you can say about Trutanich is that he represents criminals. You cannot call him a criminal.

With Jack Weiss, however, his accepting the illegal campaign contributions is a violation of a law he voted for, concerning a city employee he voted to appoint. how do you excuse Weiss? He knew he was breaking the law? What - the law doesn't apply to Weiss? Is that it?

Kinda boxed in aren't you?

Oh, and I'm going to be anonymous from now on, just like you 1:00 PM, I just want to spread a little nastiness and then hide. Maybe I should vote for Weiss...

And as for Trutanich's extended family, as far as we know only the Nooch is running, not any extended relatives he may have in the Harbor City area. We all know there are lots of Dalmations/ Croatians there, half the town's names end in "ich." He himself did indeed carpet bag from Naples, Long Beach.

Berger, you're being paid to work by US TAXPAYERS in the D A's office, yet you waste our time and money ranting the same themes?

Who's your boss? Oh yeah, Steve Cooley. Doesn't make him look too good to allow this flagrantly partisan electioneering on our dime, does it?

From a long string of memos sent to ZumaDogg@Gmail.com (Some names have been slightly changed):

Last time I met and spoke with Dan (Lastname) was in February probably within days of the Schiffings court decision authorizing the deposition of Mr. Schiiffings. It seems though that Dan failed to inform his and/or Ms. Sticky’s lawyer of this rather telling meeting that took place in the World headquarters of HArden Realty, no doubt under the watchful eye of Mr. Shmurkle who is Mr. Clington’s recent business partner.

Wetherly Capital have a rather interesting selection of corporate clients who they “assist” in helping raising monies from institutions like CALPERS. I have no idea whether they have had any success in these particular efforts although Mr. Shmurkle threw a couple of million into the kitty when he got his first $200 million installment from CALPERS. I doubt whether Wetherly Capital even have the right licenses to be doing what they are doing butt then again these folks make the rules.

And you can mention my name ANYTIME in context like this:

Those of you who know me from my political blogging elsewhere, know that I have immersed myself in politics these past couple years, and you hear a lot of things. (Deniro Voice: I heard things.) If you check the ZumaTimes.com website, you will see that these contacts allowed me to blog about the subprime mortgage crisis on May 5, 2007 -- predicting a bubble burst that would trigger a year long recession starting in November of '07.

Well basically, it happened to the day of the prediction if you check the headlines. And in October, sources recommended pulling out of the stock market entirely (mutual funds and all), because the market was going to start sinking first thing January '08. And we all know what happened.

We also learned that this would cause a big problem in the credit derivatives and bond insurance market. This next shoe, ready to drop, is scheduled to drop in February of '08 (like, next week), when all these derivative options come due, and if you think we had some down 200-300 this past month...

Well, that was just the little wave warning you that the Tsunami is coming. And it ain't gonna be a one week -- or one month sell off. We have already seen things that haven't happened in 70 years, or so. Some things have NEVER happened. You see people who have traded for 20-50 years saying they have never seen a week like last week.

So Bush can try to keep things propped up by visiting the oil sheiks and asking for a break, fiscal stimulus packages, bond insurance bail out talk (even though there wasn't any real talk) -- and the Fed can cut half a point: BUT THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO KEEP THE MARKET ARTIFICIALLY PROPPED UP WHEN THE SUBPRIME AND DERIVATIVE MARKETS END UP BEING MUCH WORSE THAN ANYONE WAS LEADING ON TO.

When people start walking away from their homes (since they now owe more than they are worth, once those teaser sub prime rates jump to market rate), banks will not only be stuck with all these homes -- they won't be able to sell them, either. (And they won't be taking in all this money, while the homes sink in value.)

People will be later and later on their credit card payments -- and many will simply walk away from those payments, too.

And when these derivative futures come due, it will be like what happened when everyone options were due last week, and everyone was caught short, and we saw a huge sell-off including all the good and profitable stocks to cover the losses on the others.

Bond insurers will be out of business, and we are already starting to see the leaks in the dam start to sprout water this past week.

Here's something I would like a news reporter to look into:

With the market down big this year, and bond insurers about to lose their AAA rating and will end up bankrupt in no time (more on that later) --

I wonder if any of this is having an effect on the City's LACER pension retirement fund. I know they like to play riskier investments than ZD would ever be taking for a pension fund.

Could be a real disaster. I have NO idea, I was just wondering as I thought about the bond insurer/subprime/etc mess, knowing how LACER invests.

There is an L.A. Superior Court lawsuit from July 31, 2001 (case # BC255110) filed by MTA against the pension investment house that lost $17 million; with Leslie Kautz named as a third party.

Kautz was represented by Mannatt, Phelps & Phillips LLP (Los Angeles, CA 90064) in the case. AND GUESS WHAT...Jack Weiss, for some reason, shows OUTGOING expenditures on the LA City Ethics website to Mannatt, Phelps & Phillip (and I've already added up over $100,000 from what I see here) -- as recently as 2008 and March 31st 2009...FOR LEGAL DEFENSE!!! (Hummana, hummana, hummana!) WHOSE LEGAL DEFENSE???

AND NOW, that Zuma Dogg has unraveled this whole LACERS pension scandal (See SEC investigation), the whole thing looks like a bunch of people have to get Jack elected as City Attorney to try and keep as much of this mess from being exposed by the NEXT city attorney.

By the way, the city attorney election is Tuesday, May 19th. Carmen Trutanich is the OTHER guy running.
