Post-mortem: Election 2009

The Associated Press says Mayor Villaraigosa “easily claimed a second term,” but for the mayor and his advisors, 55%, in a race largely ignored, against a group of challengers he out-fundraised 10-to-1 — and refused to debate, is not a win. “Landslide” was the headline Villaraigosa needed for his 2010 gubernatorial prospects, and the disappointment in his voice was clear.

Walter Moore turned out an impressive 61,000 votes — or 26%. It’ll be interesting to see whether he now leaves LA, or decides to stay and continue building on that momentum. In the meantime, one candidate, Zuma Dogg, is calling it quits — not on LA, but on his volunteer advocacy for the resistance at City Hall. He says the “spell” is finally broken.

Measure B is on life support, likely to be removed within 36 hours. Ron Kaye declares a “miracle in LA.”

Three months ago we knew it would take a miracle to defeat what was nothing but a scam for City Hall to get its hands on billions of dollars of our money in the name of something everyone wants, has wanted for years, solar energy. Well, we got our miracle. Measure B lost.

(snip)

The election results are a repudiation of City Hall's failure, proof positive that the people are waking up and demanding full participation, complete transparency and honesty, an end to machine politics that tramples on their interests and destroys their quality of lives.

No surprises in CDs 1, 3, 11, 13, and 15, or the joke elections in CDs 7 and 9. Per the latest City Clerk totals, CD5 will see a runoff between David Vahedi and Paul Koretz. Smart money says the neighborhoods take this one.

The City Hall machine sent one sacrificial lamb to the altar yesterday. Jack Weiss faces a runoff battle against Carmen Trutanich. I say May 19th will be Jack's last election night party in this town for some time.

Also noteworthy: Wendy Greuel received more votes than Mayor Villaraigosa … and Zuma Dogg received more votes than Ed Reyes, Eric Garcetti, Richard Alarcon, and Jan Perry.

Let's now do the Municipal Election 2009 "Winners and Losers."

LOSER: Antonio Villaraigosa

After spending millions against pot activists, homeless guys, and union meat packers, you got 55% of the vote. And you expect to be elected governor? What a joke.

LOSER: IBEW

You tried to take all the best union jobs away from your union brothers and sisters. You failed. They now hate you. Loser!

LOSER: Bob Hertzberg

Your endorsement again proves to be the kiss of death, this time for Adeena Bleich. Plus Walter Moore got more votes than you did in your respective races for Mayor! Prove to us that you are still relevant.

LOSER: Adeena Bleich

Running for office because, "like, it's like, my turn" is not a platform, girl! Go to cotillion and learn how to treat people, ad then you might have a future as a "non-profit director" again.

LOSER: Robyn Ritter-Simon

How many failed attempts is this now? Time to hang 'em up.

WINNER: David Vahedi

From neighborhood councils to (almost) city hall. Impressive.

WINNER: Nuch Trutanich

No one thought you could force Weiss into a runoff, but you did. Now good luck in the runoff. Doubt you'll succeed.

WINNER AND LOSER: Walter Moore

A surprisingly strong showing means your platform had legs. But had you siphoned off a few more votes; had you raised a little more money; had you campaigned a little better...you might have made the runoff. Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

And finally:

LOSERS: Ethnic-only voters. An unknown from South Central comes in third in the race for mayor? The joke, Nury Martinez, beats her opponent? Blame it on blindsighted voters who only vote for their ethnicity. Time to get beyond race, everyone.

Michael, you are to blame for Zuma Dogg leaving city hall. You built up the poor slob so much that he had nowhere to go but crashing down.

Maybe if you were more honest about his chances with him, he would realize that there are a lot of people who would want to hear his thoughts on future issues.

But now that he's gone, you've cut off the line of communication that he has with some sources at city hall.

If I were standing there, I would take off my white gloves and use them to slap you silly, stupid.

Why wouldn't Higby want to distort?

That's what this blog is all about!

Higby got clickety-clicks for this blog, which I still enjoy reading, by taking a homeless person who acts LIKE A RETARD and giving him the false impression that he had even a remote chance.

Higby acted like PT Barnum, and ZD was played like a fool by him.

Imagine: a guy who is homeless, and bills himself as an economist, thought he was going to be Mayor. Why? Because he was a pawn for people to use like a chess piece?

Higby, you should be ashamed of yourself for mistreating Dave "Retard Dogg" Saltsburg, who now has three fewer years of his life to make up for lost income and educational opportunities.

Zuma Dogg shoud go back to Dayton, Ohio and lose THAT Mayoral election, too.

But don't give me that b.s. about how Higby is distorting things only NOW. He has made a living off of making distortions and abusing retards like Zuma Dogg.

55%.

55% against nine guys who COMBINED couldn't spend 10% of what he had.

Maybe you guys should throttle back on your fawning praise of Antonio and his "coronation".

He's really not that popular, and if someone with money and name recognition had been in the race, he would have been in trouble.

I don't have much to say about my poor showing.

My appearance on Good Day LA , with half a million viewers in the morning, should have given me a few thousand more votes.

I didn't expect to win, but I DID expect to get 5 to 8 thousand votes and finish in the top 5.

Instead, I lose to two Communists, a convicted felon pot grower, and a guy who sleeps in his car and was in police custody a few days ago for allegedly threatening another candidate.

I even lost to Bruce Darian, who pretty much dropped out of the race and stopped going to public speaking campaign events over a month ago.

Devastating. Totally devastating.

I feel betrayed by my party because many of them voted for Walter Moore just because they thought he had a "chance" to win. He didn't.

David Hernandez and I were the endorsed GOP candidates and COMBINED we got about 3%.

I don't understand that at all.

I'd rather lose and stay true to my ideologies than support a GOP party deserter like Moore.

Steve, I lost the bet. I'll put your $20 in an envelope and leave it at the security desk at the Times office.

What is with the depraved hatred?

What is with the personal attacks on Higby?

How low of a person are you to repeatedly attack someone so viciously, and cowardly as to do it anonymously?

Say what you mean and stand behind it already.

I would say "good riddance" to Zuma Dogg but his ego is way to large to actually leave. He'll be back (I hope I am wrong)as soon as he is done licking his wounds (something anyone who loses an election does).

For the one or two people who think he "changed" things, he didn't. Name one policy change he enacted. Name one cause he fought for on behalf of the people of Los Angeles and won. You can't because he didn't which has been my main beef with him fr years (hat and attacking me personally). As I have put in my book (yes, I wrote a book but that is a different subject) his message got lost in his antics. When you act like a fool, people treat you like a clown. Living out of a van and acting like a clown at city Council meetings is no way to live. Maybe, just maybe, he is figuring that out. For his sake, I truly hope so.

I will say what so many won't. Anyone who says they want ZD to continue doesn't give a damn about him. He needs to get off the street and get a roof over his head. He needs to earn an honest living so he can feed himself. He doesn't need to be your personal amusement because he has the balls to say publicly what you are to chicken to. Unfortunately, the people with he most guts to speak out, tend to be those with nothing else to lose and as a result, have the least impact in effecting actual change.

Now, seriously people, can we get behind a few things here without personally attacking people's physical conditions? Can we agree that Jack Weiss needs to be defeated? I'll settle for that one OK?

And for the sorry individual who is convinced I have a huge ego but takes the time out of his day to inform me of how little he cares about what I say, the fact you say anything tells me you do care... and that is sad.

Alger, shut up.

Give it a freaking rest.

You don't know of what you're talking.

Jim, I don't wish you any ill will but I can't tell you how many cocktail parties (and not with Cindy and Mark as I know you will say) I've been at that when your name comes up there is as much if not more derision as there are for some with Zuma Dogg.

I am positive I could fill a room with far more pro-Zuma folks than pro-Alger folks. So what's your point?

You've done some things. Congratulations. Zuma has given some folks hope. You don't know how many times he has quietly taken on the case of some person at City Hall who needed help and because he was willing to speak up he got them where they needed to go. He championed their issues. He researched them and a lot of times clubbed us over the head with them. He inspired people to come to public comment and he used the law to make sure the pols don't f them over. He brought a lot of media attention to City Government and that is a good thing, even if he had dance and sing to do it.

Why can't you be Jim and let Zuma be Zuma. I didn't see you run for Mayor and get nearly 8000 votes without spending a dime, running phone banks, or walking precincts.

Sorry Jim, it just gets old.

Oh thank you for that Michael. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

No matter how many times anyone tries to post that to Alger, he just won't fucking give it up.

Zuma will be fine in a few days.

Of course Wendy got more votes than the mayor. She didn't have as many candidates running against her. People, this isn't rocket science.

Walter Moore - Loser. Sorry formeruclasororitygirl. There is no room in this city for his racist hatred and you can't deny it no matter how hard you try.

Walter Moore is a lot of things I hate, but he's not an impractical man. He won't be blogging hatred of Hispanics since he has nothing to gain by it anymore. Trust me. He's gone.

Oh Jim you crack me up.

First off you think people being critical of you amounts to personal attacks and that we've created a personal attack "launching pad." Jim, all people attack you on is your own doing. Don't blame me or Zuma Dogg or anyone else for your troubles.

No one made a vulgar attack on you. I just told you that your Zuma Dogg song and dance is getting really old. Okay we get it. You have an issue with him. You say no one (noone?) listens to him but obviously that is not true.

Zuma Dogg tried to be fair with you but he got tired of you being all about you and you even going as far to disrespect people in public with no impunity. He got tired of you too Jim.

Your victim one note speech is getting old as well Jim.

As far as Zuma goes you don't know what any of his friends are doing to help him. He says he's happy with his life. So why do you care? He's not hurting you. Other than maybe you're jealous of his spotlight. If you're not, great. Then you should just ignore him and give it a rest.

Alger has a point there Higby. He doesn't even live in LA anymore and he still gets hit for dumb shit.

Zuma Dogg said on his blog he needs to get his life together so to say that Alger is off-base for repeating what Zuma said is kind of lame.

Apologies to Jimmy Ruffin...

As I walk this land with broken dreams
I have visions of many things
Love's happiness is just an illusion
Filled with sadness and confusion,
What becomes of the broken hearted
Who had love that's now departed?
I know I've got to find
Some kind of peace of mind
Maybe.
The fruits of love grow all around
But for me they come a tumblin' down.
Every day heartaches grow a little stronger
I can't stand this pain much longer
I walk in shadows
Searching for light
Cold and alone
No comfort in sight,
Hoping and praying for someone to care
Always moving and goin no where
What becomes of the broken hearted
Who had love that's now departed?
I know I've got to find
Some kind of peace of mind
Maybe.
I'm searching though I don't succeed,
But someone look, there's a growing need.
Oh, he is lost, there's no place for beginning,
All that's left is an unhappy ending.
Now what's become of the broken-hearted
Who had love that's now departed?
