UPDATE: Haikula scoops the LA Times on SEIU Mutiny

This morning the Times has an article about a subject that Haikula scooped it on yesterday about the SEIU's en masse appearance later this morning at City Council demanding the termination of Edward M. Boks, the General Manager of Los Angeles Animal Services. Haikula wrote this story yesterday.

The Times' article illustrates that the shelter conditions have resulted in violence and severe stress to the animals due to overcrowding, and related violence to shelter employees. Assistant General Manager Linda Barth is also mentioned as a major part of the problem.

But the Times fails to report that Ms. Barth was the center of at least one major controversy at Parks & Recreation before she joined Mr. Boks.

The question is whether Mayor Villaraigosa will make another such poor hiring choice without the leadership of
Nathan Winograd, the nation's leading advocate on how to run No Kill cities. Reportedly, Mr. Boks refused enlisting Mr. Winograd's assistance to establish effective humane programs. The result of such ego-driven decisions has been a multi-year massacre.

If Haikula knew crap, she might be dangerous.

Winograd rejected an overture from the Mayor in 2005 to work in LA and proudly announced that at a seminar he held in front of 200 sycophantic fans later the same day. Then he has spent the time since then kissing up to local crackpots, bad-mouthing Animal Services, Boks, the Mayor and just about anybody who doesn't kiss his ass and his feet, as if he thinks that's the way to get City Hall to come crawling back to him with a big consulting fee in hand. Dream on Nathan. We don't have to ask why you can't feed or house your family because work has dried up for you and your "no kill - no paycheck" equation.

As for the Animal Services slackers leading the rebellion, they're the same ones the humane community has hated for 20 years. They don't care about animals, they hate rescuers, they can't be bothered to lift a finger to help customers, and somehow it's all the General Manager's fault, no matter who the General Manager is. Oh, except for the one before Boks, who gave up trying to get these clowns to do some work, so they liked him and were sad to see him run out of town on a rail.

If Haikula and the rest of you think that spoiled union bratz should be able to negotiate fat contracts, refuse to do their jobs and tell the Mayor and Council who to hire and fire, you'll all be applauding this mutiny. The rest of us expect city employees to earn their paychecks and save a few animals in the process.

It looks like Haikula does know crap. She wrote it before the Times did.

Villaraigosa didn't want to admit his hiring of Boks was wrong, and he was too cheap to pay Winograd the fee that much smaller cities pay him.

Boks also had racial discrimination and sexual harrassment charges against him.

The man is a walking lawsuit magnet.

Before you say that "anyone can file a lawsuit by a disgruntled employee," find out how many such lawsuits were filed against Boks' predecessors.

With all due respect, I picked Sarah Palin AND Joe Biden right here on the record. Look it up.

My being right doesn't give you an excuse to be a rude noodle brain. Got that Coffee Cakes?

Knowing that Mr. Boks was going to trigger a revolt is not rocket science.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but while we're talking about being right, it's "Recreation and Parks" not Parks and Rec...

Most folks think Linda Barth was run out of Rec and Parks because she was a strong female persona. Unfortunately for her, she was also the one who was forced to put LaBonge's infamous changes (pleasure piers, cable cars, parking garages, etc) into the Melendrez draft Master Plan before it was released to the public. If it hadn't been her, it would have been another RAP employee.

On the bad side, she was probably responsible for attempting to bypass the process has for concession contracts and move the popular long-time Griffith Park pony ride concessioner out without due process. Why? That's a damn good question! Why would she do that? What was in it for her? Hmmm...

Haikula,

This is a video of deputy mayor James Bickhart sleeping in a laas meeting.

He is the ultimate enabler.

Maybe you can post other videos of wasteful employees.

The way Haikula and Higby are beating their chests to claim "I was first! Look at me!" these days, they sound like crazy dogg.

Who got his smelly mutt butt thrown out of Council today for screaming, never mind that he was pontificating off topic about items not in council jurisdiction, as usual, hooray. Maybe Eric is finally growing some cojones, before Dion and Tom LaBonge have coronaries. Not having to pay them all to listen to crazy rants for hours a month would be the biggest cost-saving strategy in City Hall.

Hey Haikula, being "first!" isn't as important as being right, except to you. How many false rumors do you spread "first!" like believing the tragic but naive Shaws, that the entire Special Ops force along with garbage trucks and choppers were enlisted in shutting them down.

And then that idiot Doug McIntyre puts it out on the radio, moron Moore tries to use it to further his childish "campaign for Mayor," and so goes the chain of stupidity. Just another "coup" for Mayor Sam.

Hey swizzlestick!

I was first and I was right.

Take your pick. I was responding to the poster's chicken-shit comment that I was neither.

If you had the story on your own, you'd have written about it yourself. Unless you're a city stakeholder who's just trying to run interference.

I have an idea. I'll write about this tomorrow, and include a link from the city's website so we can talk about it further.

Or maybe I will write more about Sarah Palin.

Better yet. Next time I will give it to Zooma Dogg, and let him run with it.

Dickhart may be a sleepy dick and Boks a boob, but that don't mean a bunch of employees who we've all hated for years should suddenly be heroes. They should go do their jobs right and maybe someone would pay attention to them.

Laanimalwatch was first. They had that news up months before. Muzika had the final news up a day before. The employees emailed us only 24 hours prior. He also has transcript and vide besides eye witness a counts right after the meeting.

Poster one is bickhart. So what. He's entitled to his opinion. I still think he is wrong. Some of the employes complaining are the good ones plus 75% of the employees signed the petition. The good and bad employees both hate Boks. They know he's truly incompetent.

Sure, they knew it about Boks. They knew it about Stuckey. Those animal "rights" people are just brilliant. Except for that little head problem that normal people ignore. They will never be happy unless one of them gets the job. So I write to the councilmembers and the mayor begging them to keep Boks and not give in to the crazy nuts.

Let's roll things back to 1985 like the shelter leaders want. Those were the good old days, right? That's when the employees ruled the roost and nobody listened to the activists. That's what this is about.

September 11, 2008 6:01 AM

Oh right. So you're suggesting that the activists weren't listened to by Hahn or Villaraigosa? As an outsider (who does like dogs though), I see it as a group of activists who can't be pleased. Hahn fired the person they didn't like and then Villaraigosa fired the one that Hahn fired that the activists didn't like. What a vicious cycle of activists trying to bully the mayor every time they want more. There is always people who are like that and it sucks to have that kind of person as a spouse, so I know what it must be like for the mayors. My wife is never satisfied no matter how much I give. I give her $100 and she wants $500. I give in to go to her chick flicks and she wants me to go see them on a weekly basis. That is how I think of the animal rights crazy nuts and I remember when Hahn gave in and got rid of Stuckey. Now just because Council decided to pay him off, Council members are scared that will happen again so they pressure Boks and pepper him with questions. That makes him SEEM a lot more inept than any other GM, but it's simply not true. I bet most of you can't even name (without quickly checking the city website) the GM's of half of the other departments. That is why I call the animal activists nuts. They are few in number but loud in their voices. So loud that they annoy the very people who might back them if they sounded reasonable. Their leader is married to a guy who said on 20/20 that he thought animals lives' were more important than humans. Where is the reason there? If THAT guy wants someone in the city fired, I say keep that guy forever and don't give in to those loud crazy cat people.

I heard about this blog. I hope it is not too late to post a comment.
I'm not an activist. I just have a dog who is missing. He got out when I forgot to latch the screen door closed. I went to two of the city's shelters. The staff was very rude. One told me that it was 4:30, that they will close in half an hour, that I need to accept that I might not find him and that I should just go home. Another employee was just sitting next to her and was drinking a giant 7-11 drink and was laughing. I think they were joking about something else before I walked in.

I didn't want to cry in front of them, so I went to my car a sobbed there.

I read about the things the activists want. I don't blame them for feeling the way they do.

Maybe this manager is bad on both ends. He cannot please the animal people and he cannot lead his staff. I suppose he cannot be everywhere. I just wonder if they treat other people this way.
