A Free Market Approach to Animal Control

The City of LA spends millions of dollars on it's ineffective and often corrupt Animal Control Department. Yet, it has been unable to deliver on promises of a no-kill shelter.

As an example of how a private, non-profit, non-government funded effort can succeed, check out this video of "The Cat House on the Kings." It exists solely on donations, adopts out many of the thousands of cats who have passed through the facility, but those that don't, are never euthanized. The shelter is clean, beautiful and the cats roam free.

So imagine this place with 45,000 dogs and cats and you'll have Mayor Sam and Walter Moore's idea of "animal control"!

Great Post!!

Animal control just came after me for that $100 license fee. I am not breeding my pure bred but I am not neutering him either.

I was told if I didn't pay they would take me to court and the fine would be $1,500. I love my dog or I would have let them repo him. Just a thought.

So, I paid the $100 and was told that since I was already 6 months late on that payment the license is still only good until March 2009. What do people do if they can not afford the license fee? Give up their pet?

I think that people that chip their animal should not have to pay a license fee or should get a reduced rate. My dog is chipped. Last time he got out (and he never does) the shelter called me right away.

I had to pay $200 to get him out. Again, I feel my dog was kidnapped and I couldn't get him out until I paid them. After all they will not let them go until you pay. Pay, pay, pay. That is not fair that they can hold your pet hostage until you pay them.

Hmmm Free Range cats taste better than caged cats. Ask any coyote.
I'm tired of paying for housing stray cats and dogs. Animal rights wackos rule this city. Euthanase all the damn things. I want a dog and cat free city. What a waste of money. It should be totally supported by the jerks that own these creatures and not taxpayers.
