OPS Chief, City Named in Discrimination Lawsuit

The City of Los Angeles and Office of Public Safety Chief Gary Newton are co-defendents in an extensive discrimination lawsuit filed by a number of African American officers in the same unit. The suit covers a little more than three years from 2002-2005 and alleges that OPS Chief Newton actively hired friends and acquaintances for key roles in the then newly-created Office of Public Safety, many of whom were, according to the suit, not qualified for the civil service positions. The suit contends that a number of African American officers were intentionally discriminated against in the process.

This is the third major lawsuit alleging questionable OPS hiring practices filed against the same parties in the past two years. The jury portion of the case is scheduled to begin on November 12th at Stanley Mosk Courthouse. (Case number BC372183- MARIO PATRICK ET AL VS CITY OF LOS ANGELES ET AL)

It's interesting to see that those rumors we'd heard about OPS may indeed have some basis in fact. More as this story evolves...

With so many ambulance chasing lawyers these days, who know what lawsuits have any merit these day.

Remember this guy?

Sounds like another race-baiting lawsuit.

If anything, the reverse is true, that LAPD, Special Ops etc. are passing over qualified white males in their frantic rush to fulfill hiring quotas for every other group, especially African Americans and Latinos, but also Asians and women. Just watch any Police Commission meeting, and see that's what they all have to report on to ultra-liberal Commission Head Mack, who's still never satisfied.

That's what is ticking off white males with excellent records and lots more experience.

I guess we'll find out just how much merit the suit has starting on November 12th.

I knew some idiot would post false information. THIS AGENCY IS NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT LAPD. GET IT!!!! These officers come out of city hall where the gang banger Mayor is. This agency is the one that was at Leimert Park and more dumb people kept saying they were LAPD. Amazing people who live in the city have no clue how to distinguish between police agencies. I'm sure some think the LAUSD police are LAPD too.

12:45, no one said this lawsuit was about LAPD *anywhere*. It's about the sacresanct "Office of Public Safety". You'll notice how quiet the comments are? Even anonymously, people are afraid to speak up about this agency.

LAPD, General Services Police, whomever they are, the point is that there will always will be race based lawsuits by employees passed over for promotions and that in itself does not mean the company, agency, dpartment, etc. is not operating above the table. The comment that this department comes out of City Hall - therefore its a what, corrupt police department? They automatically discriminate? I've never seen this department on the news or read about it in the mainstream news papers. Maybe they're the one police force that is doingthe right thing and we should supportive, not suspicious of. As far as the Leimert park incident. I truly believe the Shaws just happen to be holding a rally on a day that the park was scheduled to be cleaned up of homeless, alcohol, and drug usage. God knows its been going on there forever. . .

After an impartial investigation by the Federal E.E.O.C., the E.E.O.C. found in favor of the party who filed the Racial Discrimination Complaint against Gary Newton. Now is this agency playing above the table. Several City Council Members and the Mayor's Office have been advised of these issues both in writing and through face to face meetings with some of the victims of Newton's Discriminatory practices. It is, what it is !!!

I worked in OPS (formerly known as Security Services Division) for a few years and I can tell you that this lawsuit of a load of crap. Those people who claim they were discriminated against should thank God that they still keep their job despite of their incompetency. I am just sad that real discrimination suits will be tainted by lawsuit such as this and the dog food suit.

for the guy who worked GSDPD for " a few yrs" ( could it be possible you tranferred to the equally "minority light" Port Police Dept after being TURNED down by your lower paying real love - the equally scandalous montebello PD ????) GSDPD is in trouble becuase they put in an IDIOT as a chief( Newton has very little police experience and trying to make an UNARMED city park ranger with barely a reserve level training creds a police chief is like making a monkey a jet fighter pilot !!!)

As soon as Newton got in office, instead of learning the job- getting a full POST, going to POST command school and the FBI academy, he did the " tree house club" routine- taking care of his buddies by giving them a promotion from squirrel and burning bush checkers a $10K to 15K pay raise and the chance to play "real cop", The results are hilarious and sooner or later,as GSDPD gets more responsibility and LIABILITY, the cracks in his(Newtons) inability to properly lead will result in his,and his equally incompetent( and borderline racist/elitest buddies) being replaced.....

another "race baiting lawsuit" ???? yeah right- funny that as the so called "qualified people" diminish in #s in the city of L.A. , plenty of them love to drive from their BETTER suburbs to come into L.A. and think they have the RIGHT to be police officers here because they naturally THINK that the people who live here and want to be here in the city AREN'T "qualified".

Go up and look at the recruits in the ARTC-LAPD,LAXPD, GSDPD, very FEW are from those "unqualified minority groups" and very few aren't from the (714),(951), and (661) area codes ! these are epoepl who could care less about the city of L.A. except for its paychecks, and despite plenty of police depts hiring in their own communities ,they tend to think that they MUST police people they could care less about. Proof in the pudding is the FACT, that soo many "unqualified" people are in charge of GSDPD-but no one dares say that about the so called "abused" white males like pseudo chief Gary Newton...

Wow! I am the guy who worked in SSD/OPS but I was a civilian. I am not a big fan of this division management but I know all plaintiffs of the lawsuit and most of them should thank their lucky star that they keep their job. People is too quick to arrive to assumption here.
