Ask Mayor Sam

Dear Mayor Sam, I am a faithful reader of your blog. Not sure if you are aware or not but last week a group in Phoenix announced it is going to try and do a recall on their city mayor; Phil Gordon. As they feel he has been too sympathetic to illegal aliens. Here is a link. I was wondering if it would be a possibility here to do the same to our wonderful illegal alien circus leader, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

As much as I love seeing him pop his smiling face into every celebrity filled event or happening around town, I think he needs to be relieved of his duty so he can party full time. I just think i want a mayor who represents my demographic, i.e. working class tax payer with two kids, with legal status. Somebody who is not comfortable with a high level of illegality because it is good for his career or pocketbook. Someone who will re-establish Los Angeles as a world class city, not a third world slum.
I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Signed,
Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,

As much as many of us would love to see Mayor Villaraigosa vacate the third floor, a recall is not practical. The illegal immigrant issue may be enough for the folks in Phoenix to hang their hat around; though there is significant dissatisfaction with the Mayor's positions on illegal immigration I doubt it would gain enough traction for a recall.

Another issue is timing. We're less than a year away from next year's election where the Mayor will stand for a second term. Even if succesful, a recall would have the effect of removing the Mayor only a few months before an election anyway.

Your best bet is to put your efforts into getting behind a candidate such as Walter Moore. You could donate to him here. If Moore isn't your flavor, rumors are that County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky or perhaps developer Rick Caruso are planning to get in the race and challenge Villaraigosa.

So relax and work towards another candidate. We'll have the opportunity to recall the Mayor soon without a special election.

Cheers,
Mayor Sam

Come on, Higby, neither Zev nor Caruso are going to run and poor Walter is a joke. I hope Ron Kaye runs for mayor. He won't win. The overlapping symbiotic relationships that control City Hall - public employee unions, developers and elected officials - will make it impossible. But Kaye has the credibility, experience and balls to make it very entertaining. I'd like to see Ace try and trash him.

It's not just the illegal issue...on a grander scale, Villar & Co. are guilty of massive theft, fraud and embezzlement!
What else would you call it when they have looted our treasure???

Ah yes, the return of MEAT's "five sleazy bar owners" who wanted to recall Villaraigosa as city councilmember.

How well that all turned out. And how serious they took themselves and their efforts with their $99 contribution (all 12 of them). He not only left with a high approval rating after doing blessed-be nothing for two years, but he got to annoint his successor in Huizar, annoint his successor's successor at LAUSD, and then take over the majority of the school board members.

Mayor V. is a undeserving low-life, but he's a low-life with a devoted, equivocating following with deep pockets. And that won't change through any kind of election process.

He's not going anywhere until termed out. Save your efforts for positions that grass roots can affect. Find a couple of weak links on city council, and drive a tiny wedge. It's the only sane approach. With the money and time people will waste trying to get rid of Villaraigosa they could elect 1-2 City Council members each of the next two elections (2009 and 2011), and make him an even lamer duck with less votes than he now enjoys.

That will send a message that perhaps he can't name his successor to his current job.

Nail Reyes first, he's utterly stupid and hates all across town, from the Westside and VAlley, which he wants to invade, and to all Zev's supporters for attacking him AND them; AND he's loathed by his own district, even if he did back off on Las Villas, but not after exposing himself for a fraud, wanting to go against the whole community, from parents to nuns and church, for his personal friend. And how many other friends have gotten construction jobs from Planning, the CRA, etc. for nothing or for downright harmful projects?

Unfortunately as head of PLUM he's taking credit for the generally though not universally popular anti Mansionization Ord., but if the people are educated a little on what his real intentions are, to ruin the whole city with highly dense, low income projects with no parking for HIS illegals, they'll wake up and join HIS home district. From Hispanics to whites in the hills above McArthur Park, everyone is furious at the way he's let illegal vendors and gangs turn the area into a TJ slum, and because it's so bad, wants to move the same mess west and northwest.

And he'll lose. To the incumbent. Sorry Zev, you can't screw us over and then come back later and try to run on issues that put us in the planning/transportation bind we are in today. Keep your seat. It's protected. That's why you guys are there, right? Lifetime protection? The stupid voters didn't vote to expand the Board of Supervisors so you won and got to keep it to just the 5 of you. For the whole County. Smart move, huh? 9 million people in the hands of 5 Supervisors. So how many of your constituents do you know personally? Besides those of us with "issues".

I doubt Ace can trash Kaye. Kaye needs to run. We need him. We seriously need him.

We needed Kaye in the position he was in. He was doing more good there than he could as an inexperienced pol trying to cope with the entrenched trogolodytes in City Hall. The Daily News was dumb to elbow him out.

The mayor is so CORRUPT it would be faster and easier just to get a FEDERAL INDICTMENT!

Try money laundering, OR fraud, OR bribery, OR election fixing, OR campaign finance abuse, OR …

Higby, get your hand off your dick; Antonio cannot be beaten, and Zev will never take the risk.

Caruso is just an egomaniac who runs over people right and left; no one will back him.

Moore is a joke, and Kaye is so far left of center, he's to the left of Mao. He will be easily trashed for his lack of reality. Newsies rarely succeed in politics.
