Mayor Flirts with Crime, City Snores
Our adulterous Mayor Villaraigosa has bought off another would-be candidate with a Planning Commission post, the LA Times reports.
Is the Mayor so stupid (rumored 1.77 GPA at UCLA, according to long-time MayorSam readers) and the Gang of Four (Riordan, Soboroff, Wardlaw, Broad) so disenchanted with the Mayor that the Mayor's closest Riordan-allied consultants are now setting him up for a criminal trial, and he can't see it?
Or can Thomas Saenz, of the Mayor's specially created Office of Counsel, who both overturned the State's Prop 187 and brought to the voters the City's illegal Phone Tax, now thwart even more statutes?
More on the crime of influence peddling here. In a similar case in Canada involving Canada's most scandal-tainted Mayor, Larry O'Brien of Ottawa, the province and the Mayor have made a deal to delay O'Brien's trial to early 2009.
"Lara is also the second person to receive a spot on Villaraigosa's Planning Commission after agreeing to drop out of a campaign."

If I were UCLA, I'd kindly ask the mayor to please stop telling people he went there. It's bad enough the university has to live in the shadow of an even better school (USC), but then to have the Village Idiot Mayor as a poster boy for their famous alumi must really really suck.
Fight On!

Did someone touting USC as a better school just type "alumi"?

Dearest "TROJAN SPIRIT DOLL"
We could have Villar go back to school at S.C.C.C. (SOUTH CENTRAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE)and become "ELMER's" rider. That is my moniker for the "WHITE BURRO".

Me oh my Valley Doll, the more you protest, the bigger the fool you look!
Then writing another post, and another, and another, you really seem to be having a bad day, angel.

Isn't Zahniser's article about the mayor "encouraging" (armtwisting?) another candidate to drop out of an election in which the mayor wants someone else to win, and that to do this he is promising various "rewards" to the individual who drops out as a "favor" to the mayor??? With the rewards being tied to the mayor's ability to put these folks in spots where he can wield even more influence????

Tony Villar: gets away with something once, so he thinks he can do it twice.

12:10 No, no darling -- I'm afraid it's You who is horribly mistaken. I'm having the most delightful day ever! There's going to be a Princess Tea Party at Doll's house tomorrow, and I'm knee deep in pink tulle, cotton candy jelly beans and dusting off my Grandmother's china, listening to the Strokes on my iPod and enjoying the goodness of the day. If anything, I'm feeling giddy -- Spring in the air and all that.
Hope your day is just as lovely and dreamy as mine.

The "better school" classification may not hold as regards USC Basketball, as they have regretably LOST to Kansas State. I mean KANSAS STATE!!

All hail Valley Doll...
All you ingrates, mongrels, and human flea bags shut the hell up, and start getting into your "funny-bunny suits" now!
Mayor Sam said:
Terrific post Joseph.
It brings up a few questions:
How much will Lara get paid?
If Perez gets elected to FMB Fabian's seat, can I get his CRA seat?
Indeed, why is Riordan on a throw Tony Villar under the bus tour?
If I blog down for a few days does the blog get better? Seems like it to me! :)

USC even better than UCLA? With its proud alumni like Bitter Bernie, and a history of spoiled brats too dumb to get into better schools? PUHLEEZE. UCLA students are a billion times smarter and better looking.
USC gets half its enrollment from abroad now, since smart, rich kids know better than to go to that awful area. And their journalism profs are a bunch of old lefties, now that Norman Corwin and a few good "old school" types have retired. USC's student body and location are far inferior. Their male and female water polo teams are uglier, too, and UCLA's are better looking and national champs!
Need I go on?
Besides Parks, Alarcon prefers USC as being "more diverse," another sure sign it sucks. UCLA has lots of smart Asians -- guess they don't count in his book as the "right" kind of minorities. Smart Asians have been redesignated "honorary whites," I guess.
UCLA has a much nicer campus, too.
Now we know for sure that Valley Doll should stick to thinks she knows about, like girl scout cookies and her plans to open a bordello and move to Utah so she can many more men.

I meant, so she can "marry many more men."
And the princess tea party sounds right up her alley, too. Buried in tulle, indeed.

USC is in the middle of the beautiful diversity of Los Angeles. The USC students can go outside the campus and buy some wonderful bacon-wrapped hot dogs from a shopping cart equipped with a propane tank. Can the UCLA students buy a bacon-wrapped hot dog, right outside their campus?

UCLA students wouldn't eat a bacon wrapped hot dog.

Neither would Kansas State students..

Perez resigned from the CRA board. He did this prior to filing papers to run for the Assembly seat. Mayor has named Dave Sickler to fill the slot..

Dear JM,
Would you please expand on the following (taken from your post)?
"the Mayor's closest Riordan-allied consultants are now setting him up for a criminal trial"
Say what? Huh?

Looks good to me. ;-)
I think he means figurative, that the advice the Mayor's getting from old Dick crones in the Mayor's office is reckless.
Would the Mayor really just do this on his own without asking advice? I really doubt it. The question then becomes, who do you ask? It's not the kind of thing you put down on paper: "Hey, shoot me an email: how do we take this clown out of the race?"

It was a question. I asked the question as to who's giving the Mayor the kind of off-the-cuff advice that flirts with ethical violations at minimum and more likely with breaking the law if someone chooses to apply it. It's almost like a dare, it's such an audacious flaunting of executive power.
If you or I don't want somebody to run for office against a relative of ours, we don't have the power to offer them a prestigious civic position. The Mayor does. When he uses that power to game an election involving a relative of his, he should answer to the people.

What we have been seeing at City Hall the last few years is a somewhat new phenomenon in L.A.: "machine politics." This is typical in Sacramento, but, until the Sacramento folks starting playing around at City Hall, we were pretty much spared this kind of #$!#@.
Now, though, this seems to be acceptable/everyday behavior: to jerk around the public by way of power politics, by pre-selecting chosen favorites and eliminating independent thinkers, by punishing even those whose only "wrong" is to be independent, etc.

All the fault of Kim Thompson, I'm sure.

It's bad enough that we have done away with general elections in California (with gerrymandered districts that make competition impossible).
Now Fabian Nunez, Gil Cedillo, and Antonio Villaraigosa have even done away with primaries.
"Let's just decide who will get the seat amongst ourselves. We'll give the 'voters' one choice and that candidate will win."
Stalinist Russia, anyone?
Disgusting.

6:05 is correct about the termed out Sacramento politicans running city hall with that same back room mentality.
I say NO MORE TERMED OUT POLITICOS! You had your turn -- leave the City alone-- that goes for you too Paul Koretz-- stay in West hollywood --

Geez, I stopped reading this blog because that fool named ZD kept answering every post by everyone else.
Now I see he has returned wearing a dress and not being able to spell or articulate a cogent thought.
USC, the home of that great intellectual, O.J. Simpson (see his famous "suicide" note for 3rd grade spelling and grammar)has no place criticizing UCLA. They both have their share of losers and winners.
Let's get back to conversation that transcends our sophomore years. Please.
