Thursday Hotsheet at 3 a.m.

JM, Beach Day, 3.14.08

Joseph Mailander
a guy in laelsewhereemail

It's gone this low: the Mayor tries leading by siesta. First he handed out raises like candy, now he asks City employees to take a day or two off, sending the ironic clear message: City employees make too much.

In an important but inconclusive piece yesterday, Zahniser went after lobbyists who aren't fully disclosed as lobbyists. Singled out for the headlights were Hillary Norton Orozco, who repped the Las Lomas developers without registering, Mickey Kantor, a former trade chief who consulted the Port of LA, and L&W land use attorney William Delvac, registered in some categories but not others, and who has been conversant with the Autry Museum over the disposition of the Southwest Museum, without officially repping them.

How dependent are Councilpeople on registered City Lobbyists in helping them to make decisions? Enormously. Anything the Mayor, the City Attorney, or the CLA doesn't tell them to do, a lobbyist will. If you think they listen to ordinary citizens...no, they don't. Never. Not ever.

The fact is, however, that the thirty-hour rule is not a good one, it's an arbitrary, capricious one. You can see a lobbyist an hour a month and they are likely to have far more influence than an NC president you meet once a week. The perceived connectivity of the lobbyist is everything; it's not a matter of time, it's a matter of influence (and pols apply the same yardstick to scribes and bloggers, too). There is no single good demarcation regarding who constitutes being a "lobbyist", and there never will be: as with the banker, the politician's evaluation of another human's prospective shadow of influence is a highly subjective business; but the quality is at the essence of every political career.

As Red Spot noted, the Autry takeover wardance with the Southwest Museum is featured at the Weekly. In the process, the Weekly dismisses the Autry as a "tourist trap", which will surprise the thousand-odd working artists who are featured in the museum's galleries, at big-tent sales, bbqs and quick-draws every year. It may be predatory, but it's also the lifeblood for hundreds of artist colonies throughout the southwest; the "tourists" from throughout the southwest are all too willing to be trapped.

Here's a bold educational strategy out of Idaho: actually teach students something! In this case, it's chess. LAUSD's enormously diverse statistical pool could easily produce a junior champion if they ran the game by their own second and third graders.

Negative images of Latinos on a police station mural in Boyle Heights, some residents claim. But Sandow Birk is a very renoun and talented artist who certainly knows the stakes of public art, and I suspect he's smiling to himself. The best public art is always an image that exhibits the tension between political ideology and social reality.

Should the Daily News distribute to Boyle Heights? We say yes. We think they'd find lots of friends there.

Click on the artist website and you will see nothing but violence, gangs etc. Who picked this loser?

His mural is as bad as having african americans eating water melon in 77th division. I'm sure the people would be outraged. WE speak English and we're educated Latinos.

If you had not elected Antonio and Jose, over the last four years, you would not have had such a person who recieved $195K for such a picture.

I would have rather seen the history of the community rather than just violence, but she was replacating the community.

I guess if you got your kids under control, and you speaks English, are educated and outraged, it is up to you to change YOUR community that is 90% non English speaking, street vendoring, and starting wars.

Refresh my memory but did Richard Riordan work for $1.00 per year during his eight years in office.

I guess that Corina will be out of $400.00 plus change for Villar's noble act.

The "new and improved? (?) lobbying regulations were designed by the lobbyists, who sold this bill of goods to the council members as part of their highly flawed Prop. R package...which was then sold to the public as "ethics reform." And, since the electeds wanted something that sounded good to the voters in order to buy themselves another term, they bought into this scam.

Now, we see the results. Not "reform", but stepping backward instead.

I think the Idaho chess curriculum is great! We actually have an after-school chess class at our school (and yes, my Boy was Chess Champion for a couple of years ... he can clean your clock in six moves) except LAUSD would/could never spring for a an instructional class for all kids -- the afterschool class was offered as "enrichment", and as such, parents had to belly up the tuition, which was worth it but it would still be nice to see it offered as part of the learning curriculum.

And whoever makes things happen over at the Daily News should definitely see to it that the paper be delivered to Boyle Heights. Absolutely! The DN, and not the LAT, is the paper to read and it should be readily available to our friends up in the BH.

9:50am that is mean and bad Karma to say. she made a very good point. Look at Mirthala, she's not fat and wears braids. Huizar looks pretty damn stupid with his quotes. He says the lady with the shopping cart is not an illegal vendor but she's going shopping. HELLOOOOO Huizar, she's illegal vending and we all know you support illegals.

From L.A. Times ....
"The tile mural was meant to depict a quaint Sunday in Boyle Heights. Many angry residents say it makes their neighborhood out to be a crime-ridden dump filled with fat women, stray dogs, beer-swilling men and illegal street vendors. And don't get them started about the piñata"

******************

The irony of course, is that if you drive around Cesar Chavez and Soto Street, you see exactly what is shown on the mural and mentioned in the above article. The area liquor store always has drunks hanging out front and illegal vendors and fat women are up and down the block. And of course gang grafitti is all over the place.

It must hurt when the police depict the reality of East Los Angeles.

Just read the article about the person set a blaze torched/burned in the middle of a busy street. If this is not violence and crime at an extreme, what is?

Regarding the Rasmussen presidential poll, it is important to point out that the margin of errror is 3%. That means that poll results showing McCain ahead of Obama 49-42% might also be McCain 46% and Obama 45%.

It is also interesting to note that Rasmussen Markets uses other information (not polls) to predict the changes of each of the candidates becoming president.

That result is that Obama has a 42.6% chance, McCain 40.2%, and Clinton 16.5%.

County Supervisor Gloria Molina and LAUSD president Monica Garcia are also very upset about the mural at LAPD Boyle Heights station, the vitriol, oh the vitriol. They are especially upset about the negative stereotype of overweight Latinas. Los Angeles dos not have illegal street vendors, drunks, gangs or graffiti.

Most Mexicans in Los Angeles are angry about this negative stereotype; the pictures below are from East Los Angeles and show the real pride of Los Angeles Mexicans. Enjoy your pictorial tour thru East Los Angeles.

The polls also show that Hillary has pulled ahead of Obama, although she's behind in delegates. But that should sway some superdelegates.

Obama justifying Wright's speech as a product of his upbringing, while throwing white grannie under the bus, has obviously hurt him. And it was gratuitous to lump Ferraro in with a man who spews hate from the pulpit every Sunday in what's apparently a common occurrence, the "Sunday hate hour."

Hardly Christian, or what Jesus would do. But that's where Obama takes his kids. Claiming he never heard that out of Wright in 20 years is a lie or just stupid.

I know some young biracial college kids and they're not like that, they wouldn't go to those churches.

“The Easter Holidays are near. Let’s spend them in peace and good company. You can also renounce the ham, chocolate-eggs should be sufficient for an Easter atmosphere.

Would it not be more harmonious if we did not associate religious celebrations directly with ham and other non-spiritual symbols? Do really so many animals have to die when we celebrate higher consciousness and try to develop spiritually? The answer is clear: of course not.

Feasts don’t have much to do with spirituality, just the opposite. Even considering that we can try to understand that in some eras, in which food was scarce, religious events were celebrated with banquets, we can now leave such material remnants behind us. True spirituality does not need them, just the opposite, because they show us that religions demanding such identifications got stuck at a relatively low level of consciousness.

That’s why we’ll try to celebrate the occasion differently this time. We use the opportunity for a walk in nature, for a cleansing of the spirit, for the search for internal peace. We are friendly to our family, our neighbours and all those suffering in this world. Also to animals. We spare them this time from our lust for meat and we try to overcome historical behavior patterns.

We will do something good for our spirit and our body."

10:53 am Boyle Heights is a beautiful community and now the illegals are moving in like rats and have flith, trash, tons of kids, shopping cars etc. all over the community. Antonio and Huizar have allowed it and support the illegals. Read Huizar's quote. How stupid does he sound? He sounds like he supports people breaking the law and not the community who are upset over a mural that would be on a police station for decades.

...A woman pushing a cart that some said was an illegal street vendor? "That is not a street vendor!" Huizar cried, looking at the image. "To me, that is a woman going shopping. Look at her, she's got her bag."

Any educated Latino knows better except Huizar who behaves like a TJ. He feels comfortable around illegals. Reyes and Huizar have the dirtiest districts. Sad, people who pay taxes have to see that shit all the time. Hey, does anyone know where Huizar lives? A lot of people say he's not living in the house in Boyle Heights like he says. No one is ever home neighbors have said.

2:32 nice pictures of East Los Angeles. The mural is so wrong, about it's depiction of East Los Angeles.

Of course there are no drunks, illegal street vendors, street gangs, graffiti or drug dealers in East Los Angeles.

The picture shows all the beauty of East Los Angeles. I just read East Los Angeles is city of America for all its wondeful qualities and best mexican-food catering trucks.

Don't rag on illegal street vendors. They're doing the best they can. And they work. I respect people who work hard, especially as I go through life and come across more and more freeloading fuckers out there, blue collar and white collar alike that is for damn sure.

The guy with his head in the street, well, it's harder to defend him but at least I got a good laugh out of seeing that picture. It reminds me of the time I was driving past one of the new high schools they're building in downtown l.a. and these two winos were filthy and lying on the sidewalk, talking to each other and laughing, the widest grins on their faces. They seriously looked like the two happiest sons of bitches on the face of the earth. I was borderline jealous.

NO some mexican gang members probably did it. The mexican gang members are showing what low-life scum-bags they are, they show us on a daily basis.

They have killed babies, kids, woman and grandmothers.

I will post the stories of some grandmothers killed by mexican gang-memers who saw the mexican gang members spray painting graffiti.

The mural in East Los Angeles should show some cholos, because East Los Angeles is infamous for being home to the mexican mafia. The housing projects of Los Angeles have created more cholos/gang members than anywhere else in the world.

Why not show the real East Los Angeles where gang members burn people in the middle of the streets.

Help sought to find killers of man set ablaze.

"
Sheriff's detectives will ask for the public's help today in finding the killer or killers of a man set ablaze with gasoline on Oct. 7, 2007, in East Los Angeles.
As many as 20 people are believed to have witnessed the attack on Marcial Sanchez, 52, who was set on fire about 6 p.m. that Sunday in the 3500 block of Cesar Chavez Avenue, a few blocks east of Evergreen Cemetery, according to sheriff's deputies. Detectives, however, were unable to find anyone who would admit seeing the attack. Today, they plan to make an appeal to the public in attempt to generate new leads in the case.
