Border Insecurity

The New York Times ran an interesting editorial yesterday (by the same title). Below are a couple of excerpts and some questions.

BORDER CROSSING

"From San Diego on the Pacific to Brownsville on the Rio Grande, a steel curtain is descending across the continent. Behind it lies a nation so confused and conflicted by its immigration problems that it has decided to wall itself off and wait for things to fix themselves. This country once was a confident global magnet for an invigorating flow of immigrant workers and citizens-to-be. Now it is just hunkering. ...

"Let’s agree that any country needs to control its borders and ports, and that this one has done too little on that front. But that worthy goal founders when the overall strategy boils down to simplistic components — bits of fencing and technological cure-alls — rather than a comprehensive solution that also attacks the reasons people cross illegally. Despite what critics of “amnesty” say, immigration reform has never been a choice between legalization and enforcement, because legalization is enforcement. Only by bringing people onto the books and being realistic about the supply of visas, letting people in through ports of entry, instead of chasing them across the desert, will the country restore sanity and order to this broken system."

Full Editorial

Questions: (1) Will the immigration issue be a factor in the 2008 election? (2) Will there be any push for "comprehensive" immigration reform no matter who is elected the 44th president? (3) Does supporting "enforcement first" of any immigration reform package help or hurt candidates?

We need more illegal aliens in Los Angeles. Los Angeles is a great city because of all the illegal aliens, especially those folks from Mexico. I can eat some great Mexican food at Olvera Plaza, or I can eat some yummy, bacon wrapped hot dogs on Broadway street, in downtown L.A. I especially love the shining catering trucks selling delicious tacos for $1.00 at all hours, the tacos melt in your mouth.

The street vendors around the Westlake Disrict across the street from FoodForLess, have some great "duty free" merchandise. I shop for all the kid's school clothes there. I ocasionally even buy some "duty-free" smoking herbs for my glucoma.

The mexican urban artists who spray paint their beautiful artwork on signs, walls, streets, apartment building and even delivery trucks give us the joy of seeing so many master-pieces for free. I often take pictures of the artwork to enjoy and share with family and friends. The artwork is such an inspiration for other young up and coming latino artists. We should have free spray paint can, give ways for our aspiring latino artists.

I love all of this latino culture, I embrace it and marvel at all is glory.

Ed I hope you will join this Sunday for some menudo at my favorite place in the Valley.

Ed I think that some right wingers and Conservative talk show hosts (Lou Dobbs, Mark Savage, Rush Limbaugh ect) will be very vocal in this area, but I see more than a couple of reasons why it will not amount to much, and the candidates, Democrat and Republican will likely avoid the issue like the plague.

First of all the old saying "It's the economy stupid" is as valid today as when the term was coined.
And both candidates will have to go to the post on the bad economy and come up with a "new deal", which will be a campaign platform priority.
Secondly with the new power that Latinos have and are using with the vote I don't think either candidate will want to piss this voting block off by making a statement that could be misinterpreted as being nativist or ethnocentric. The candidates of both parties will when asked about immigration, have a nice response which will be mostly hand wringing and a call for comprehensive immigration reform.

The nativist anti immigrant spokesmen with all they're odious and shrill draconian solutions to the immigrant problems have gone far beyond any rational discourse and have tainted the immigrant issues with hate, racism, ugly generalization's, and a zero sum solution of "deport them all and the anchor babies too", this has pissed off many in the Hispanic community, and numerous onetime Republican Latinos have switched allegiance to the Democrats who by and large display calmer voices of reason and rationality.
When the real campaign for the Presidency begins neither candidate will want to be baited by radical anti immigrant groups into committing a faux pas that could cost them votes from an already irritated Latino community.

They will stick to the economy, the war in Iraq, Health Care, and rising energy costs.
Also I think the issue of replacing elderly Supreme Court Justices during the next couple of years, which could swing the High Court one way or the other will be an issue that will be high on the priority list.

I wonder if the blacks in Southern California who are being shot and killed my mexican gang members, think we should "import" more future gang members from mexico.

I wonder if the law enforcement officials at today's international gang summit think we need more illegal alien gang member in the U.S.

It's pretty interesting that Ed and Don Quackery never mention any of the daily murders committed by mexican gang members a great majority of which are illegal aliens. Or address the fact that 25% of Calif. jail inmates are illegal aliens. These two clowns should read the LAPD website, and see how many illegal aliens are on the LAPD's most wanted list.

I guess these two pandering clowns also believe LAUSD has some of the best schools in America, because of illegal aliens. These two pandering clowns must think we are as blind and stupid as they are, and can't see the realities of illegal immigration here in Los Angeles.

There's certainly a lot of passion on both sides--and in between--on this issue but I get the sense that it won't be a defining issue for the November election. From everyone I've talked to or read, it also seems that it won't be on the agenda for 2009 either.

I agree that Iraq, healthcare and other issues will stay on the frontburner.

That said, depending on who gets the Democratic nomination, there may be "compare and contrasts" to be made between McCain and Obama. As you may know, the latter supports licenses for undocumented immigrants.

As for the menudo offer, I have to admit that I'm vegetarian. And my favorite place in the Valley is Senor Fred on Ventura. Can you beat that Anon? '-)

Illegal aliens from Mexico built L.A. Without them we'd all be living in mud huts now. The draconian nativists like Lou Dobbs want us to go back to our pre-illegal-alien days in which we didn't have things like medicine, stable government, functional infrastructure, and a safe food supply.

However, because of the cholo Mayor and the other TJ councilmen who haven't done anything for their Latino districts, support and pander to the illegals this is becoming a sanctuary. Which Latino councilman have fought for this country? NONE

PHOENIX (AP) - A new study concludes that law enforcement and criminal prosecutions linked to illegal immigration is costing Arizona border counties millions of dollars a year. The study says the battle over illegal immigration is also diverting money from parks, libraries and other law-enforcement efforts.

Buth illegal and legal U.S. citzens commit gang murders. How does a cut and paste from Phoenix illustrate your point that Latino councilmen haven't fought for our country? There were 1.1 million Hispanic veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces, as of 2005.

http://www.migrationinformation.org/USfocus/display.cfm?ID=572

Over 10 percent of those serving in the armed forces are of Hispanic origin.
Persons of Hispanic origin accounted for 10.2 percent
(138,556) of the total 1,363,147 men and women serving in the armed forces as of May 2006. Hispanics made up 13.5 percent (24,075) of the 178,190 persons serving in the US Marines; 12.5 percent (13,703) of the 349,301 men and women in the navy; 10.6 percent (51,673) of the 487,898 individuals in the army; and 5.5 percent (19,105) of the 347,758 air force personnel.

Because of all the natural forests in Santa Clarita?

How much do we spend for health care for illegal aliens?

How many illegal aliens have crossed the border to have their baby here in the U.S., and recive free medical care while pregnant and then welfare for the anchor baby after birth.

How many American citizens are unemployed because of illegal aliens? The illegal aliens are not just working picking lettuce and cleaning your toilets as Mayor V. once stated.
