Ominbus bill includes clearing path for Subway to Sea

There is likely to be a small victory for the Mayor's office, and a larger one for commuters in the City of Los Angeles, when the current omnibus spending bill clears Congress. The bill includes repealing of the prohibition that Waxman sponsored in 1986 that prevented the Red Line spur (now known as the Purple Line) from extending to the Westside. Sign On San Diego has the details.

The federal prohibition was originally pushed in 1986 by Democratic Representative Henry Waxman of Los Angeles. Waxman said at that time he feared construction could cause explosions of naturally occurring methane gas, something that had happened the year before. New research has convinced him and others that it can be done safely.

Right. Anyway, the Bill has cleared the House.

In 1986 California was so full of shit, a guy lighting a cigarette in Nevada could have blown up the state himself.

Remember, it was ZEV YAROZLAVSKY WHO GOT WAXMAN TO PUSH FOR THIS BAN.

The methane explosion happened under the Ross Dress for Less Store (still there) at its just east of Fairfax location, which Zev then represented as CD5 Councilman.

So typical of Zev: It's Waxman who's taking the heat for being reactionary when he just listened to his bud Zev.

The methane explosion was really an excuse to pander to the NIMBYs in Cheviott Hills and WLA who didn't want "those people" having easier access to their neighborhoods along the transit route.

All the studies showed the east- west corridor to Santa Monica from downtown would have had by far the most ridership, so all this money was wasted.

Of course, they were helped by the reverse-racists at City Hall who said the poor people should have mass transit first since they need it most, so it stayed East of Highland, where it's pretty useless and indeed, largely used by Hispanics and lost-looking tourists who wonder "where the city is."

But Zev has emerged recently to offer to "lead the people's revolution" for mass transit due to the congestion on the westside he started and refused to mitigate.

So he should always be mentioned in conjunction with the Yarozlavsky- Waxman anti-mass transit debacle legislation.

This guy should never win for higher office.

At least Waxman admits he was wrong and is taking the blame, which is more than can ever be said for Zev, who takes credit where none is due.

Berman will never admit he's wrong. Cut him loose. He's way past his prime.

For all his blather about health, smoking, and now steroids, Henry Waxman's subway ban did untold damage to pepole's lungs who are breathing the pollution from all these cars who are choking LA streets because we lost twenty years in trying to build a practical alternative transit system. So now he gets praise? Please.

And you gotta know that Waxman got some of that smog sucked into his pig nose too.
