JM, A Hole is to Dig, 12.14.07

Joseph Mailander a guy in la elsewhere email

If the former fishwrap-of-record wants to get in the business of critiquing ten year old buildings, as it did yesterday, why doesn't it go full colonic and and review fifteen, twenty, seventy-five year old buildings? Noble Central Library's rehabbing came at an awful public artsy price---could you imagine a quote stuck onto any other library in America less literacy-inspiring than the one above (text: "A hole is to dig/a bookis to look at") ?

For that matter, "Books alone are liberal and free..." which has been carved into the north entrance for rather longer, is more than a bit hyberbolic for a quote that appears on a library, n'est-ce pas?

° ° ° ° °

Maybe the library folks should talk to the bankers across the street about how to make changes to quotes etched in stone. The way banks have been taken over by other banks over the years, it's too bad that some of those bank names on buildings from other decades weren't hung with velcro rather than etched in stone.

And how about a first-ever honest review of the Disney Hall? The Times' 2003 pr-gasm made it out to be a bridge-and-tunnel dream, but...Within three weeks, actual concertgoers discovered that the hardwood floors made it impossible to move in one's tightly-crammed seat (four inches less legroom than the Dorothy Chandler in most spots), there was no place to meet friends as there were no real rooms other than the Hall itself, and the sound was so uneven throughout the hall that Keith Jarrett exclaimed mid-concert "I'm never coming back."

Last season was a special travesty. With no place to situate a hot kitchen other than a bad one, the Hall's fire alarms disrupted three concerts. And when I say "disrupt," picture epilepsy-inducing flashing lights and all the attendant noise of a fire station in the middle of a three-alarm rush. Give me the Dorothy Chandler any time.

° ° ° ° °

Yes, it could be a slow local news day. It could be a slow local news day. It could also be a slow local news day. BTW, it seems like it's a slow local news day, and the incidence of OCD is increasing, the Daily News says.

° ° ° ° °

Both Daily News and Times are covering the Pellicano trial this morning, but this is one about which readers simply don't care. It keeps threatening to fetch some kind of star-power quality but keeps slumping into more pedestrian proceedings.

° ° ° ° °

And...

HW, Tres Borrachos, 12.16.07

A couplethree MayorSam bloggers got together yesterday morning at an undisclosed inner city location to celebrate Beethoven's Birthday, anticipate the winter solstice, and sip a few Sunday Morning Mimosas even into the mid-afternoon. Bloggers yours truly, MayorSam, and Antonio Watch also broke Brooklyn Bagels with a few of LA's most generous and friendly people, whom we'd like to honor but we know they're far too classy to want their name in the local fishwraps, or even the social paradise that is the LA blogosphere.

Alas, Zuma wasn't around---he was busy heeding that old sixties bit of advice: "If you don't like the news, make some of your own." It may be good advice for all scribes this holiday week.

Here's an interesting story on what Mayor Newsom wants to do in SF.

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- For years, the idea of taxing soda to beat back obesity has been tossed around in medical circles. But now, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is proposing a tax on beverages high in fructose corn syrup. Newsom says obesity accounts for tens of millions of dollars in city health care costs. He cites a recent San Francisco Health Department survey that found nearly a quarter of the city's 5th, 7th and 9th graders were overweight and that high sugar drinks make up a tenth of a kid's daily calorie count.

Newsom reportedly wants all big box retailers and chain drug stores to pay into his new "Shape up San Francisco" program, which started this past summer with a walking regimen.

This comes as the state of California is considering slapping caffeine-infused sodas, and energy drinks with warning labels, saying consumption can contribute to diabetes.

Would Zuma be the "FIRST MUTT"??

The Los Angeles mayoral race is still two years away and no major opposition has emerged so far to Villaraigosa's plans to seek re-election, but a citizen movement is starting to draft Controller Laura Chick.

Don Schultz of the Van Nuys Neighborhood Council and a longtime San Fernando Valley activist, said he has been going to various groups to try to develop grass-roots support for Chick.
"Most groups are reluctant to take a position at this point, but they are willing to listen," Schultz said.

In the last mayoral election, Schultz supported former Mayor James Hahn. However, before that - in 2001 - he supported Villaraigosa.

For her part, Chick said she appreciates the interest.

"I am honored by all the people who have been urging me to run for mayor," Chick said. "I'm completely focused on my job as the taxpayers' watchdog and not my political future.

"I am grateful, however, that people recognize the work the Controller's Office is doing in eliminating waste and fraud, and making city government more accountable and responsible."

Chick is termed out of the controller's job in 2009 and had flirted with the possibility of returning to the City Council, but recently ruled that out.

BTW, kudos, sniffles, and coughs to my fellow "BLOGGIN BURROS" for yesterday's get together. Will hopefully quash this "BUG" in time for Saturday.

Hey Stupid...

How can you possibly say that WMD is the biggest story of the century when there were NO WMD's. It was all contrived so that Bush could start his little war.

The biggest issue with voters is IMMIGRATION...not Iraq! Iraq was never a threat to the US but ILLEGALS have invaded and now there are 38 Million of them sucking off the taxpayer money! Not to mention the fact that we are going third world.

You obviously are one illegal lovers...your lack of informative, cogent thinking is showing! Wake up and smell the tacos on the roach coaches!

Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen (holds head and moans with hangover):

I'm STILL feeling wrung out from the Pirate Ball on Saturday evening. One hundred people in attandance, which is enough to staff a small armada. Two brithdays were celebrated (one from de Marisco's crew and one from Bonnet's crew), and one wedding anniversary (one of my Five). It was truly a very fine time with wine, wonderful food, song, all sorts of frivolity and hilarity, even ball room dance lessons. And several secrets as well as a few glasses of fine wine were spilled, savvy?

(Winces in pain) Bloody hell! (Takes sip of soda water) That should help. Right then. About those secrets. The Bard and a few of his colleagues hosted an open karaoke microphone, assisted by a few members of a somewhat casual mariachi band from de Marisco's crew, joined by a uke player from my crew, an impromptu percussion section from Roberts's crew and one bona fide diva who was somebody's date for the evening. After the liquor had flowed somewhat liberally, a sot from one of His Nibbs's commissions got up and sang a clever little ditty written by a well known troupe of minstrels entitled "You Can't Always Get What You Want," and changed the lyrics to reflect what, if you will, is sometimes the order of the day, savvy?

(Holds head in hand and whispers) And yes, Mrs. Kefflebaum, there was LOTS of hard liquor involved.

Wake up people, Schwarzenegger or the Mayor are not the only ones that are causing a Fiscal Crisis of BILLIONS, we are in a crisis caused by Bush and others that amounts to TRILLIONS, a debt that we, our children and future generations won’t be able to pay. These people think they are elected to become kings and forget that their positions are to serve the people, not themselves, their family or business associates. Americans need to wake up before is too late. Stop your bickering, remember if this country goes down, we all going to suffer the consequences one way or another. Our congressman and senators need to stand up for our rights and the betterment of our communities, otherwise leave those positions to others that will do the job.

"BOSS D'ARCY UNPLUGGED"

By David Zahniser, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
December 17, 2007
The union that represents workers at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has begun sending voters copies of a DVD that portrays the agency as a system "in crisis."

International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local 18, which represents 8,000 DWP employees, mailed the eight-minute video along with a letter urging ratepayers to contact Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and their City Council member about the state of the nation's largest municipal utility.

"You can regard this as a first installment," said Bob Cherry, a union consultant, who added that the 30,000 DVDs were sent in large part to highlight the need for additional hiring.

DWP Commission President Nick Patsaouras voiced dismay over the campaign, saying he thought he and other utility officials had reached an accord with the union's business manager, Brian D'Arcy, over issues such as attrition and the need to repair decades-old equipment that delivers electricity and water to the city's 4 million residents.

"I'm just flabbergasted, because I thought that this issue was behind us," said Patsaouras, one of four commissioners -- a fifth seat is vacant -- on the mayor-appointed board overseeing the utility.

Although a much smaller shipment of DVDs was sent last summer to city officials, the videos began arriving at the homes of voters last week, just as the council delayed until Feb. 20 making a decision on two years' worth of proposed rate hikes.

The campaign also coincided with the arrival of H. David Nahai, the DWP's new general manager, who started Dec. 1.

Union representatives did not return calls Friday seeking comment.

But the letters that accompanied the DVDs, which were mailed to an estimated 2,000 voters in each of the 15 City Council districts, argued that Los Angeles' electrical and water systems may not be able to cope with future heat waves and a steadily growing population.

"Watch this short video and then contact the following decision makers and ask them what they are doing to properly staff and update the water and power systems in our city," the letter states.

Much of the union's message has centered on the need to upgrade the DWP's equipment, from receiving stations to neighborhood transformers.

The DVD, which features footage of D'Arcy, uses ominous music and blurred images of utility workers as it warns that 40% of the workforce will retire in the next five years.

Magic is "TRAGIC" when its comes to politics.

Former President Bill Clinton and retired basketball star Earvin "Magic" Johnson will be in Davenport on Tuesday to campaign for Hillary Clinton.

The ex-president has been a regular on the campaign trail, but this will be the first time that Johnson, who played for years for the Los Angeles Lakers, will have hit the hustings in Iowa for U.S. Sen. Clinton.

The two men will be at Davenport Central High School for a 10:30 a.m. event, according to the Clinton campaign. Clinton and Johnson are making stops in Davenport and Waterloo. Clinton will then continue on to Hampton and Fort Dodge.

This will be the second time the former president has stopped at Central. He made an appearance there in 2000 while pushing for increased federal spending for school repairs.

From "Capital Alert" regarding Prop 93.

• The campaign against the term limit initiative could prove pivotal given
that support for the initiative is coming from voters who want to shorten
lawmakers' time in office. "You think to yourself, my God, a "no" campaign
could peel off those voters," DiCamillo said. "I'm a little skeptical about its
chances of passage."

No one commented on the fact that three of the blogging burros actually show their faces here, together for the first time. In the spirit of the holidays, I'll refrain from comments. Except to note that we can see why at least a couple of them are so obsessed with the Mayor's, anyone else's, sex life.

As for Disney Hall: that whole move from Dorothy Chandler pavilion was handled with a total class of class. Utter disrespect for subscribers like me wife and me who'd worked our way up to third row seats, just left of center -- by buying seasons' tickets for years starting in the crappy seats.

whey they moved, all of us in the first 4 rows lost our priority seating, because Disney starts the equivalent of 5 rows back, from the old configuration.

so the best subscribers were treated the shabbiest. lost of rebellion talk over champagne in those days, but they didn't care, so the hell with them.

The rush was partly because Esa-Pekka demanded the new acoustics or threatened to walk.

Disney also shone like a reflecting heat lamp into nearby condos until it was veiled, so now its architectural integrity is ruined, all for nothing. A totally half- assed job all around.

To Arnie bashers: he's the guy who's been trying to stave the budget deficit, even to the point of stealing L A's 1.2 billion in "surplus" gas taxes, right? The Republicans have their share of pork for the hick towns while masquerading as fiscal conservatives so there's plenty of blame all around.

Newsome and his S. F. politics are so done -- on a statewide basis, he has no demographic support. Yes, sugared sodas are bad for teens: one study said cutting them out would lose them avg. 10 lbs./year.

But saccharine additives for growing brains pose questions, too. And the acid in all sodas can cause bones to acidify.

So why not educate the kids and parents? Adults have a right to an occasional sugared soda if they want, banning is B. S. And what about "natural" sodas that also have cornstarch?

Newsome may have a point regarding the canned sodas. Perhaps it may be well to tax sodas containing corn sweeteners, as both obesity and acid reflux tend to result from drinking too many sodas with the corn sweetener additives.

The flip side would be not to tax sodas sweetened with cane sugar - there is a zero percentage of acid reflux caused by these sodas, and the human body is better able to digest the naturally-occurring cane sugars.

5:02: Keep in mind that Arnold is really a Dem under a different name: he's in agreement with Nunez to offer uni health care to all in Cali, which would cost $14 billion at a time when we're already ten mil in the hole.

A fact pointed out by none other than the Dem leader Don Perata -- who's coming under pressure to back off and basically say, hey, we'll in the s-t so deep anyway, what the hell is 14 billion more?

As for Laura Chick: she backed out of running for CD5 because it's the worst quagmire in the city, they're opposed to any solution or compromise with Weiss but basically want to stop all traffic yesterday.

Which they did, and Zev listened, so we're trying to come up with mass transit 20 years too late, as costs have ballooned enormously.

Better late than never, it won't get any better without it. Yeah, Arnold swiping the $1.2 billion in "surplus" gas tax that could have gone a long way towards mass transit (while wanting to spend almost ten times as much money we don't have for uni healthcare) even got my softie Rosendahl riled up, he wants Arnold to "give it back," it's not "finder's keepers." To person who says Mailander is old: hey, don't you know ageism is the last frontier of prejudice, like race was a couple of decades ago. As people use their minds more actively, and work out actively, it CAN be (but is not usually) true that 50 is the new 30.
