Outtakes from the "RED SPOT INSTITUTE"

Happy "EL GRITO DAY", to the "PUEBLO DE LOS ANGELES" from the RED SPOT INSTITUTE. Here are some quick hits on local concerns and issues. Consider this your Friday "OPEN THREAD".

LOS ANGELES TIMES, "FUROR DISRUPTS PLANS FOR UCI SCHOOL OF LAW": Former USC Professor and Constitutional Law Scholar Erwin Chenerinsky removal as the first Dean of the new UCI Law School continues to reap column inches in the local fish wraps. Chenerinsky who was once a member of the City Charter Reform Commission, has taken his case to the Editorial Pages of today's Times. I will echo Talk Show host Hugh Hewitt comments, Erwin is a great Constitutional Professor who you wouldn't want on the Ninth Circuit Court Bench.

LA OBSERVED, "THIRD FLOOR DEPARTURES":

Diane Rubio and Elizabeth Kivowitz have left the Mayor's Office of Communications for greener pastures. Or is it "MIRTHALA BACKLASH" ??? Makes you go hmmmmm....

LOS ANGELES TIMES, "PLAYA VISTA ON HOLD":

State court orders halt to the final stage of the massive Playa Vista Project. Siting a "FLAWED" ERI Report, the three judge panel stated that the EIR did not properly account for impacts on land use, watershed and archaeological resources. Comment, Laura Chick, where are you ??

LOS ANGELES TIMES, "LONG BEACH WATER RATIONING" and "COUNCILMAN URGES FIGHT ON PROJECT":

Water and Open Space concerns on this respective stories, point out the strain on our finite capacity of resources. Can we agree that as of now "SMART GROWTH" is "NO GROWTH" ??

*****IN CLOSING, HAPPY WEEKEND !!! AND IN A BRIEF BOW TO "P.C.", "VIVA MEXICO!!!!!!*****

You forgot to mention in the L A Observed update that it also mentions all the defections from the L A Weekly since Jill Stewart was "forced upon" them by Corporate in Phoenix.

As a result, among other defections, we know that Dave Z jumped ship to the LAT "as soon as possible," Hernandez went even further, all the way to Mexico, and instead, she's got her own carefully-honed and recruited stable of "freelancers" like... One "city hall gadfly" and brief candidate for CD7 -- against Alarcon -- Zuma Dogg.

Whom she sics on groups like SCAG (to the "amusement" of real reporters) and famously, the shady business going on downtown with Eli and Dick and those guys. Observed says no one believes that zuma was literate enough to actually write these "attack" pieces, but he's a convenient shill to hide behind. Because heck, everyone already knows he's insane, so the real writers (Stewart herself?) don't have to take the heat for their wild allegations.

Now, is zuma dogg going to send Kevin Roderick all kinds of emails threatening to "sue for libel" or delete this post? Or, "respond," i.e, rant at me.

I agree with college not to appoint Erwin. He made too many wrong opinions on issues and seems to have a bad taste for LA

Mr. Spot, it seems to be an opportune moment to inform Mr. Mayor Sam, as well as his developer and NIMBY critic buddies that a wave of reason has enveloped the City Council, regarding the dangers of overdevelopment and densities. Have City Council members opened their eyes to reason? Do they finally understand that the citizenry will not tolerate blatant bowing to big money? Does the City Council finally understand that blatant lawbreaking by developers are serious offenses? Are they pulling away from Mayor Villariagosa and developer's "master plan" to overbuild before the citizens recognize what is going on?

Note these recent, Council actions against these large, proposed development projects.

#1: This week, Councilmember Huizar lead the effort and passed a measure to temporarily stop the development of Elephant Hills, so that a supplimental EIR can be produced.

#2: This week, Councilmember Smith lead the effort and passed a measure to temporarily stop the assessment of Las Lomas project, in the Los Angeles/Santa Clarita area.

#3: This week, Councilmember Greuel lead the effort and passed a measure to correct the General Plan so that a discrepancy between the General Plan and the Tujunga Community Plan will require that a development use a lower density, as is indicated for the Tujunga Wash area and is described in the Tujunga Community Plan.

Isn't that incredible?

Mexican National Anthem

Mexicanos, al grito de Guerra
El acero , aprestad y el bridón,
y retiemble en sus centros la tierra.
Al sonoro rugir del cañón.

First Stanza
Ciña ¡Oh patria tus sienes de oliva!
De la paz el arcángel divino,
Que en el cielo tu eterno destino
Por el dedo de Dios escribió.
Mas si osare un extraño enemigo
Profanar con su planta tu suelo
Piensa ¡Oh patria querida! Que el cielo
Un soldado en cada hijo te dio.

Chorus
Mexicanos, al grito de Guerra
El acero , aprestad y el bridón,
y retiemble en sus centros la tierra.
Al sonoro rugir del cañón.

Second Stanza
¡Guerra, guerra sin tregua al que intente
De la patria manchar los blasones!
¡Guerra, guerra! Los patrios pendones,
En las olas de sangre empapad.
¡Guerra, guerra! En el monte, en el valle
Los cañones horrísonos truenen,
Y los ecos sonoros resuenen
Con las voces de ¡Unión! ¡Libertad!

Chorus
Mexicanos, al grito de Guerra
El acero , aprestad y el bridón,
y retiemble en sus centros la tierra.
Al sonoro rugir del cañón.

Third Stanza
Antes, patria, que inermes tu hijos
Bajo el yugo su cuello dobleguen
Tus campiñas con sangre se rieguen
Sobre la sangre se estampe su pie.
Y tus templos, palacios y torres
Se derrumben con hórrido estruendo,
Y sus ruinas existan diciendo:
De mil héroes la patria aquí fue.

Chorus
Mexicanos, al grito de Guerra
El acero , aprestad y el bridón,
y retiemble en sus centros la tierra.
Al sonoro rugir del cañón.

Fourth Stanza
¡Patria! ¡Patria! Tus hijos te juran
Exhalar en tus aras su aliento,
Si el clarín con su bélico acento
Los convoca a lidiar con valor.
¡Para ti las guirnaldas de oliva!
¡Un recuerdo para ellos de gloria!
¡Un laurel para ti de victoria!
¡Un sepulcro para ellos de honor!

Chorus
Mexicanos, al grito de Guerra
El acero , aprestad y el bridón,
y retiemble en sus centros la tierra.
Al sonoro rugir del cañón.

Slight correction to offer:

Re: Las Lomas, CM Smith is working to stop sprawl -- neither a NIMBY issue nor a smart growth/infill issue.

Major props to him for stepping up and defending this region from the boneheaded Las Lomas project.

Unless some folks are big fans of more gridlock and more mobile source pollution, asthma, etc. Those people should be pissed.

It's easy for Greig Smith to take a stance on the big 5,500 home dev't because it's not even in L A County.

So of course he has nothing to lose in opposing a development that would encroach on L A but give no revenue, and in fact, wants to take our water.

As for Huizar, he's in so much doodoo for not doing anything about keeping his district from looking like TJ, he wanted to do one high- profile thing to make himself look like a pro-environmentalist. Just a crafty political image-boosting move.

When he next runs for office, he'll probably stand next to some bird or owl he "saved" from development.

2:03p, sorry, Smith isn't the simplistic dolt you are trying to make him out to be. Amazing that you would fault the guy for being pro-active.

If Smith had "nothing to lose" with Las Lomas, then what is it that Alarcon has to gain?

"Encroachment" on L.A. is hardly the issue. Sprawl, and all its inherent infrastructure elements which Las Lomas can never solve, is.

Jack, your putting Smith and Alarcon, "simplistic dolt" and "has to gain," all in the same breath, leaves one with too many inviting options to say yes, and yes.

I've never seen anyone who doesn't think Smith is a S D, but everyone has a defender. No way am I defending that Las Lomas project, but it's a fact that's it's NOT in L A County, so Smith had nothing to gain from the developers -- unlike Zine, with his mega-mall in Woodland Hills with Westfield.

What does Alarcon have to gain? He too has nothing to gain financially so he wants to look good by denying the project access to L A water (which Santa Clarita doesn't want to give them, either), and giving them the op to pollute our skies and clog our roads when there's no revenue or mitigation possibilities in it for L. A.

That's what.

2:33p, Setting your axe-grinding aside for a moment, I think we are in agreement that if a local landowner builds a dam upriver, it affects all the local landowners downriver.

It doesn't matter whether a sprawl project is in L.A. County or not, Las Lomas would directly and negatively impact the lives of those in the San Fernando Valley.

In other news, according to a doc I saw, Alarcon realized a $3,000 campaign contribution from the same lobbying firm that also represents Las Lomas.

The proposed Las Lomas project is all within Los Angeles County, around the intersection of the 5 and 14 fwys. Both Los Angeles and Santa Clarita would both wish to annex it. If it goes to Los Angeles City, then a portion of it would be in Greg Smith's District.

These are big projects. Potentially, a lot of money may be thrown at decision-makers. Understand, it's always risky to oppose big money. The Councilmembers should be recognized for opposing the big money.

Of all the heroes who are Latinos in this city to honor dumb ass Antonio keeps giving the same damn low life Latinos award. he even said Edward Olmost last did something in 1992. We have young brave Latino soldiers who fought hard in Iraq, we have brave police officers who have saved lives in this city just last week 5 in Hollywood saved people from a burning building and were all over the news. There are tons of Latino youth who have overcome huge obstacles and yet nothing.

Actor Edward James Olmos, composer Gustavo Santaolalla and singer Pepe Aguilar were honored today at City Hall as the city kicked off Latino Heritage Month.

Hey everyone Hillary is in Los Angeles yet not one photo op with Cholo Mayor. I thought Michael Truijllo was her campaign person here. Wonder why Hillary hasn't hit the Eastside yet. She'll get tons of boos for having Antonio even on her team.

Magic Johnson is scheduled to join Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton at a discussion in Watts today, then host a fundraiser for her campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination at his home near Beverly Hills...according to Luis Vizcaino, her campaign's California communications director

But on the eve of Clinton's Southern California campaign trip, the eight-member California Legislative Black Caucus announced it is endorsing Obama.

"It's imperative that we choose the candidate who is committed to addressing the disparity gaps that exist in our communities," said Assemblywoman Karen Bass, D-Los Angeles, the caucus' vice chair.

All my Latina Democrat friends are pulling for Obama. He's gotten tons of new people since Antonio's scandal.

No one gives a hill of beans (frijole style) who your Latina wife supports. But now that your 'Latina wife' has endorsed Hillary, she will surely lose!

Viva...Jack Hoff's 'Latina' wife!! Wow!!! Impressive!!!

Actually, Alarcon is willing to let Las Lomas proceed if the developers pick up the costs of their mitigations (which Smith says can't be done), and pay the city for their water usage. Smith says no way.

Wonder why someone from the East Valley is sticking himself out for this?
