Big Fun Day on Big Sunday

Even a gruff, angry, misanthropic, know-nothing, utterly cynical scribe like yours truly can't find much wrong with Big Sunday. Though believe me, I've looked. Hard.

Do you have a few hours on Sunday? Give 'em to Da City. Maybe some borderline Goodwill-ish items that happen to be on this list? Give 'em to Da City.

Maybe if you give the Housing Department enough in-kind donations, they can finally tell me how many rental units there are in the City, something I've been trying to find out from them for almost a year now.

And hey, you can bet I'm looking forward to that big pizza party for the volunteers in Griffith Park. I intend to get my share. Good thing I don't have to pay that damn Affordable Housing tax---I'd have to try to eat $60 worth of pizza every year for the next thirty years.

Anywaz Joe its a great feel good and massive photo op for the electeds. In fact yesterday in council each of the clowncilpeople were bragging as to how often each of them got their picture in the paper cleaning up bulky items.

See my previous commentary on this. Volunteer work - consistent civic engagment = waste of time. I realize there are strong emotions around volunteer days like Big Sunday and its hard to get past the emotion in criticizing the concept, but we have to do better. We have to demand more.

Imagine if 10% of the people who showed up to Big Sunday or other "projects" got involved in their neighborhood council (or Rotary or Jaycees or YMCA or neighborhood watch or PALS or church or temple or mosque or garden club or whatever) - the city would be transformed.

Oh and Simon Cowell would probably lose a few bucks too. Did anyone see American Idol's BS feel good attempt at community service?

Big Sunday actually takes place all day Saturday AND Sunday at sites all over the City, so no excuses. Enjoy free breakfast, 8-9 a.m. at Westwood Park (behind Federal Building) at a gathering of westside Neighborhood Council activists before donning free Big Red t-shirts to wear while helping to beatify, plant and clean up the city.

Hell, I'm just trying to imagine 10% of the people actually voting in the next civic election...

Your complaints about Big Sunday are pretty much mine about the LA Conservancy. What a waste of personpower that could go to making homes for the homeless or something like that! Have they won any significant (non-HPOZ) battles since St. Vibiana's?

Zuma Dogg gay? Doubt it. I've seen him check out females.

Anyway - Joe - good point. However is it really the purpose of the conservancy to create housing? How about creating the Los Angeles Housing Opportunity Foundation. This group would get private and corporate support to provide housing to those who need it and structured in a way so that its not a handout but a hand up. Then, those who were helped, pay it forward to the next generation of poor.

Of course it doesn't create jobs for bureaucrats but it could work.

But even if the conversancy is failing at providing housing, I give their members more credit than the glad handers who show up on Sunday for their annual one hour of donut eating, two hours of work and one hour of pizza eating.

The day is just about over and might I say for a select few, it continues at this hour. Obviously you all know that I am active and participating for my third year.

Out in the EAST area of Los Angeles much of the credit goes to Ozzie, Gabriela, Special THANKS to Abigail, and those behind the scenes allowing the 'Project Coordinators' to bring this all together. (#0129)

This year Rose Hills Community & Homeowners Association is working in over five areas of city property. (BEAUTIFUL) Working with the Department of Recreation and Parks (PAB Memeber)~ Fire Station #47(DISASTER PREPAREDNESS)~ Huntington Drive Elemtary~ Wilson High School for outreach and intersection along Amethyst.

This is where I get involved, this opportunity is impossible to have negative reviews (from ROSE HILLS) becuase I know what the neighbors want and I also know how the city provides.

Makes for a systamatic issue of neighbors helping neighbors to improve as we wish, to implement an immediate effect to 'city' property that impacts our local community. BUILDS DEDICATION

For all of you getting ready to 'hate' ~~~~~~~~> KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

Check out this clip to see a (behind the scenes) look at why this year the subject of discussion between 'true' organizers is.......... NO LAST MINUTE WORRIES...... SMOOTH.

Regarding the idea of having 10% of the volunteers to participate in other civic services it will likely not happen. Reason is the public believes some one else will do it.... (and I say to the Anony'mouse' - that means you obviously are not doing it or you would be out making things happen, the difference between us is, I am not waiting for you. Proves my point, nothing would get done if you handled things, so it looks like this communities 'GO TO GUY' is Anthony. ME) LOSER...... :)
'I AM UP BEFORE THE SUN'.

For all those true community leaders assisting this weekend, it is you who the city should praise for your loyalty not only to your neighbors and community, but for your honored services as an AMERICAN CITIZEN enforcing the dream of a beloved President.... (Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country). You have stepped up and have taken a lead role in doing what others only dream of.

THANK YOU, ON THIS GREAT DAY IN THE CITY OF ANGELS.

'CITY GUY'
