Update on Academia Charter Renewal

Just in case you visited this Blog yesterday and did not notice the Thread on the Charter Renewal for Academia Semillas del Pueblo. Here is an update on yesterdays School Board meeting in which the charter renewal was one of the topic matters.

First, as reported by Richard Santiago on Doug McIntyer's Show. District officals lead by Greg McNair, conducted a year long process into various areas of the Academia's operations. Test scores were judged against schools such as El Sereno Elementry, Farmdale, Sierra Park and others. Once they were done with their investigation. They submitted a report that recommended that the renewal for Charter be denied.

Academia, for their part, submitted a Document of Re-organization to address these concerns. Academia and their supporters, including School Board Member, Monica Garcia, questioned the process and the motives of school officials.

All theatrics aside, the next phase of the process will play out on March 27 at the "THEATER ON BEAUDRY".

This "school" cannot even 'make the grade' among other schools of similar ilk... and failure. It would be a travesty to renew the charter! As an American taxpayer, I am SICK of all this crap! Stop the insanity!!! I would love to see ALL these schools closed down! You CANNOT educate the UNEDUCATABLE!

The government already funds Aryan brotherhood schools. They're called state prisons, and they cost 10 times what any other "school" out there costs to run.

Of course, their graduates come out MUCH better trained to continue the "work" of the race.

ON THIS MATTER OF 'CHARTER SCHOOL' = CITIZENS MONEY/TAX PAYERS. THEY SHOULD FOLLOW A MESSAGE OF SOCIETY TO OBSERVE STANDARD CUSTOMES.

NO FLAG ON CAMPUS SHOWS LACK OF DEDICATED ACKNOWLEDMENT TO OUR COUNTRY AND THIS ALONE IS EVIDENCE THAT THE GROUP MAY HAVE ALTERNATIVE MOTIVES TO PERHAPS ENDANGER THOSE WHO STAND FAST FOR THE RED, WHITE , AND BLUE.

THEY RECIEVE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS IN FUNDING, PERHAPS IF IT WAS A PRIVATE SCHOOL MUCH OF THE CONVERSATION CAN BE OMITTED.

DENIAL OF THE RENEWAL SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AS IT ALLOWS OTHER 'UNKNOWN' AGENCIES TO OPERATE IN A FUNDED ISOLATED ENTITY TO ENCOURAGE SEPERATISM.

OUR GOVERNMENT HAS WARNED US OF EXTREMIST AGENTS WITHIN THIS COUNTRY, WITH THE PATRIOT ACT,(ALL BECOME SUSPECT) SPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO THE SAFETY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

I TALK TO THE NEIGHBORS, (LIKE NEXT DOOR) THEY WISH THE SCHOOL MOVED ELSE WHERE. THEY DO NOT GIVE CREDIT TO THE EDUCATION, JUST ANNOYED WITH ALL THE NOISE.

I HAVE SEEN THE CURRICULUM AND AS A NON-PARENT, I QUESTION WHY MATH AND ENGLISH HAVE LESS SUGNIFICANCE THAN DANCE CLASS.

I HAVE HAD A POSITIVE RESPONSE THAT THE SCHOOL DOES TEACH THE CHILDREN ABOUT NATURE AND EARTH.

YOU CAN SO NO ONE OPPOSES THE SCHOOL, BECAUSE NO ONE KNOWS IT IS UP FOR RENEWAL. ONLY THOSE THAT HAVE RELATIONS TO THE GROUP HAVE THE BACKING TO SUPPORT IT.

THEY DO NOT HAVE THE COMMUNITIES SUPPORT AND OF COURSE THE (LA-32 NC) DOES NOT REPRESENT THE COMMUNITY, YOU ALL SEEN THAT.....

ALLOW THEM TO EXHIST IS MY OPINION, JUST NOT UNDER THE CHARTER. IF THEY BELEIVE SO MUCH THAT THEY NEED TO BUILD AWARENESS OF THIER CULTURE, THAN TEACH IT, WHERE IT MATTERS MOST, MEXICO.

I WONDER WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF I ASKED FOR GOVERNMENT/PUBLIC FUNDING TO OPEN AN ORGANIZATION IN PERU, NIGERIA, HONG KONG, OR NORWAY AND TEACH OF (ST. JOHN DON BOSCO ~ UUUMMM I ATTENDED BOSCO TECH). I WOULD PROBABLY BE IMPRISIONED AND EXILED FOR MY BELIEFS AND THAT IS FROM A WELCOMING COUNTRY. IMAGINE IF I DID THAT IN A COMMUNIST COUNTRY.

(TARRED AND FEATHERED)

THIS IS AMERICA, TO THOSE AT ACADEMILLA, BE THANKFUL YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY AS A CITIZEN TO BE ACCEPTED, NOT TO FORCE YOUR BELIEFS UPON US. YOU ARE AMERICAN BY NATURE, ACT LIKE IT.

You speak for many of us. My grandmother is sick and old. The drums keep her awake and the school doesn't care. The school doesn't care if I work at night and have to sleep in the day. I support my mother and grandmother and have to work, sometimes I'm fall asleep at work. I already called them. Who else can I call about this problem?

Thank You.

two questions:

Rosehills: why the CAPS? still. sorry, it is painful to read, I agree. don't be stubborn, this is a request from the people you wish to read your post. right now I cannot. I respect your 'right' to do it, as some kind of trademark of yours, but please, we're asking, and you will indeed be doing yourself a favor. trust me on that.

2. RedSpot: you contributed a thread here, ending with
"All theatrics aside, the next phase of the process will play out on March 27"
please explain for us dum dums exactly what this 'process' is, and exactly what the next 'phase' is.
you seem to assume everyone knows that. it may be simple and procedural, but it helps us understand if you be more specific if this is your specialty topic.

what happened to the agenda item yesterday, and exactly where does it go from here?

LAUSD will continue to "punt" this as much and as often as they can - preferably past the general election in May.

Nobody running in tight races wants to vote on this renewal. Academia doesn't just draw support and students from the local community and school district - it comes from all over the city.

Can you say HAWT POE-TAT-OWE - ouch, ouch, ouch?

I knew you could.

At the first hearing, Tokofsky was the only board member willing to ask staff any pointed questions. Canter tried to shut him up, several times.

Guess why?

HE DIDN'T RUN FOR RE-ELECTION!

He's the only untouchable still on the board - so don't expect any heroics from anyone else that's left; one way or the other.

Except Monica, of course. The school is popular with her support group and in her district, and she has two more years before she sees another election.

If you think city council is a "clowncil" just watch this "school" board become the STALL BOARD, over the next several sessions, and for as many weeks as it takes, to lay it in someone else's lap.

Or, if they can't keep it moving, expect a "limited" or perhaps "probationary" extension of the school's charter, with some "concrete" goals to allow Academia to address certain performance issues over a shorter term, and report back. The meetings are most likely already taking place to suggest this as a "compromise?"

It will likely be for another 2, or perhaps 3 years, rather than full-term renewal, which means the next version of the school board, and maybe even the 2009 roster (controlled by Antonio?) will have to deal with it.

I feel sorry for Anthony and so many people like him that I have meet from ELA who seem to have Stockholm Syndrome when it comes to the United States. We can love and appreciate our rights and freedoms without acting like a battered spouse about it.

To everyone who predicates their arguments from the perspective of a "taxpayer," did it ever occur to you that the families and supporters of Semillas also pay taxes? Many of the parents at Semillas are college educated with incomes far above the region's household medium income. Regardless of which economic strata the school's families may fall into, they all pay sales taxes and fuel the economy through their collective purchasing power.

Someone of you are getting red face right now as you think about 'all those illegals.' Calm down. Did you know that the IRS issues tax identification numbers to workers who request them for income tax purposes? Sure, not everyone uses them, but it goes to show where our federal government places its priorities.

I applaud Semillas for not buying into the No Child Left Behind Act approach to public education. As the New York Times, Bloomberg, and other credible news sources have found, schools in poor communities throughout the U.S. have stripped their daily curriculum down to reading and math, the only two subjects that are required to be tested under NCLB. This means three hours of math and three hours of reading. In other words, in what is arguably the communities where a rich and well-rounded education is needed the most, students only get wall-to-wall test preparation time. By contrast, Semillas provides a dynamic curriculum that will prepare its students well for high school and productive members of society. By solely reviewing test results, you will not get the full picture.

Semillas deserves to continue. If you agree, let your LAUSD board member know.

XF, what about Semillas going private? Then we all can be sure that those who support how the school operates, but not those who oppose it, pay for its operation. I mean, across the county, tens of thousands of families are paying solely out of their own pockets to send their kids to private schools to avoid having them go through the sort of education they would get at the public schools. Why shouldn't the parents of the children at Semillas be expected to do the same? They want a Chicano/Aztec/whatever education for their kids? That's fine, but *they* need to pay for it.

You answered my question. The school doesn't serve the immediate needs of the poor immigrant families. It serves families in the upper middle class with a Anti-American agenda.

XF here...

To 3:15 pm: Semillas' parents DO pay for their children's education -- through taxes. When it comes to where our tax dollars go, we all have to take the good with the bad, which is determined by our own perspective. I bet that for every Californian who is against funding Semillas, or charter schools like it, there is another who supports the idea.

As to 4:33 pm: Semillas DOES serve immigrant families. From what I know -- which is limited in the case of this subject -- the school's demographics can be split 60/40 or 50/50 between college educated Chicanos and their Latino emigre brethren. As much as I hate to disabuse you of any preconceived idea, you are wrong.

As to your second point, I recommend that you and Anthony start the "Mommy Dearest Club" for Americans who never question their country, despite her shortcomings.
In fact, what is more American than the redressal of grievances through peaceful means? I dunno.

Calling someone un-American for airing their grievances or saying something that may be considered unpopular is, ironically, one of the most un-American things you could do.

Sincerely,

XF

XF, paying a couple of bucks in sales tax while you bankrupt the hospitals, take government handouts, get a free education and work for cash does not qualify you as a taxpayer in my book.

Unless all XX million (who knows the number for real?) immigrant/illegal/undocumented are camping out somewhere under the stars every night, they pay more than just sales tax.

They're paying property taxes directly, if they own a home. If they rent, they're paying the landlord who turns around and uses those same funds to pay HIS (or her) property tax.

Just like the "legals" do.

That IS what pays for the schools, all public schools, for the most part.

Its a bogus claim that only legal citizens pay for the schools their children attend.

11:03, the important (economic) question is how much the illegals take versus how much they contribute.

Now that's a public service. Think of the plane fare U.S. research scientists are saving not having to fly 2,000 miles south to study these rare diseases.

10:37,

Indeed. Think of the economic benefits. New companies will be sprouting up left and right to develop novel treatments for these exotic diseases. That means fewer unemployed American scientists, and an improved likelihood that the U.S. will continue to maintain its global preeminence in biotechnology.

We owe A LOT to our illegal immigrant population for this blessing in disguise. If only Ebola virus and SARS were endemic to Latin America. That would really get our economy moving.

Maybe we can get the world to revolve around us. Get the construction workers to not work 6-3 and the lapd to not lauch a helicopter at 10am, or the mariachi players to not start practicing at 1 in the afternoon. Or maybe the traffic to not pass by between 3-6?
