Ballot Oppostion Statements
Council Member Eric Garcetti's office advises that Jon Coupal, of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers' Association, has been selected to write the statement that will appear on the ballot in opposition to the billion-dollar "affordable housing" bond.
As for the opposition to the term limits measure, a meeting is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. today to decide who will write that. Yours truly has applied for the mission. If they pick me, what arguments do YOU recommend I include in the 250-word statement?

Walter I have faith you will know exactly what to say and be our voice.
Are there going to be any more meetings re term limits in Rules & Election, Ethics etc.???? We want to be there to oppose.
Also, does this mean the ballot measure is finally going to be on the ballot as it is now written?
If these clowns would have allowed NC's to be part of the process I wouldn't need to ask these questions.

Two words: Tom LaBonge.
(Just kidding, Tom.)
How about including the fact that the playing field is, now more than ever, tilted in favor of incumbents? We need a real race in each district at least one every eight years.

Pargue just gave the best argument in favor of extending city council terms to a possible of three -- to cut the profit margin out for the hacks and wonks that feed off of the lobbyists and developers that pour money into council races.

Wacko, while you're down at City Hall, do you plan to report the contribution you are receiving from Mayor Sam allowing you to use his for-profit website as your virtual campaign office?

Three words:
Vote
4
Wacko
!

Okay, okay, that was two words, one number and one punctuation mark. But you get the picture.
BTW, what are the chances that the Council will choose this clown gadfly to write an opinion? I'm taking bets now!

Basically highlight the power of incumbency and how this can lead to careerism and corruption, and how term limits can open up access to non-career politicians. And make sure you negate the argument about term limits increasing the power of staffers and lobbyists.

Yeah, like WHAT non career pols?? There's still the same number of seats, and the same people playing musical chairs with them -- except now you come BACK from assembly, senate, etc. to City Council.
Makes no diff.
People and still going to pay into the campaign of, and vote for the better known candidate (i.e., career pols), no matter what they're running for, or where.

Just put a group photo of the current City Council and ask "Four more years of this??"

These career clowns always play musical chairs. ughh

That's a great idea. Thank you. I hadn't thought of that, and it's always best to pre-empt the other guy's argument.
I also like the picture-is-worth-a-thousand-words suggestion: "Four more years of THIS?"
Keep 'em coming. I have yet to hear the decision, but I have heard from the Jarvis group about collaborating on the bond. They actually wrote to me on 8/2, but my computer thought it was junk mail. Maybe have been the subject line: "Herbal Viagra." Kidding. The subject line mentioned the bond.

"Might have been" -- not "Maybe have been."
Memo to self: proofread ballot argument before handing it to City Clerk....
