AFTER ONE FULL YEAR OF MAYOR Antonio Villaraigosa, Los Angeles is not exactly different. The schools aren't stellar, the subway doesn't run to the beach, the homeless haven't left the streets, traffic doesn't move freely, housing remains scarce, a city budget crisis looms, the police shortage persists, the smog still hovers.

I read all the opinions pieces on Antonio's 1st year and they all say the same thing. He's energetic, has nice smile but has spent too much time on LAUSD and not taking care of the city. The best op-ed was Daniel Hernandez in LA Times yesterday Current View. He wasn't afraid to print the facts of all these reporters who are afraid to go after the hard stuff on our mayor.
The L.A. Times lost all credibility with today's assertion that he's a "fiscal conservative" who cut spending. Had the reporter bothered to glance at the budget, he would see revenues climbed, on their own, without the trash tax hike, by $800 million. The idea that Villaraigosa somehow cut costs to eliminate a deficit is a big lie of which Stalin himself could be proud.
Ditto the "1000 new police officers." I've forgotten the exact number -- I wrote about it earlier -- but most of those "new officers" are merely replacements for officers we're losing through attrition.
The L.A. Times does not report news any more; rather, it publishes press releases.
As a City employee I see absolutely no change. The work environment is not one conducive to improvement or change. Why doesn't Antonio learn from Al Gore and try to change his organization from within? BEcause he really doesn't give a rat's ass. If he can't get some coverage immediately he ain't doing it.

Poster 9:44am should read Daniel Hernandez's op-ed from yesterday. He slams the LA Times for being too soft and not reporting the facts. LA Times has lost thousands of readers because of their horrible reporting. Most of the other opinions state the obvious that Antonio takes credit for other people's work. Hey didn't Jaime Ragnaldo use to work for AV? He's now with Pat Brown Institue and commenting as an outsider.

Doug McIntire states that Academia Semillas del Pueblo in El Sereno "is one of the worst-performing schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District" and "it fails in its mandate to educate children." McIntire, having read the original charter, concludes that it was clear from the start that this school should never have been granted a charter by the LAUSD.
So why was this charter granted? Was it a deliberate act to discredit the charter school movement, was it a political payoff, or was it just another example of LAUSD incompetence?

Why hasn't anything been posted on the college immgration bill making its way to legislature. They want to allow illegal students going to college to qualify for financial aide. By doing this they are again saying even though we know you're illegal we will help you get grants and money.
The principal mentioned in this article, Minnie Ferguson, is Marcos Aguilar's wife, according to a Title Search I did on the school property. This is the first time I have heard her name mentioned...I thought Marcos Aguilar was the principal.
"The district is also looking into business and financial records", according to this article. This is exactly why I did a Title Search on the property. I posted the results a few days ago, and I truly believe there is a Cause for Action here. Something smells really fishy. Minnie and Marcos have suddenly become the proud owners of not one...but two expensive homes. And it looks like there was fraudulent reconveyance between the original owner of the school property, William Vasquez, and the current owner, TZICATL COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORP, which turns out to be Marcos Aguilar. BTW TZICATL was Aguilar's Mecha code name when he was at UCLA in 1993. LA RAZA DEVELOPMENT CORP has a $185,000 loan against the property.
These are just the highlights from the Title Search.
I have sent all the info to Doug MacIntye because IMO, this school is just a shell for LA RAZA and the Mechistas, and we taxpayers are helping to fund it. We can bring them down if we can prove fraud. THis is not a PRIVATE school. I am hoping to find Villaraigosa's fingerprints all over this thing. It's very, very strange that he has not weighed in on this problem! And how come it only took one day to determine that everything was kosher at this school? It's a huge cover-up! No wonder Villaraigosa wants to take over LAUSD.
I need to make a correction here: I am not certain that Minnie Ferguson and Marcos Aguilar are married. BUT they are both listed as primary owners of the two owner-occupied residences in Alhambra and LA 90065.

According to the following link to the schools cached website, Marcos Aguilar is principal of the school as well as the treasurer on the council of trustees. Minnie Ferguson is listed as principal teacher and secretary on the council. The president of the council of trustees is listed as Maria Martinez. Does anyone know anything about her?
So Ferguson is an illegal, too? And how much damage was she responsible for during the 1993 temper tantrum at UCLA? Did she pay any of that money back?

If you immigrate to this country, you are part of the system. You have to integrate yourself into the system. And the integration path is the language. English is needed in the place of work. Instruction comes in only one language, and you must master that language. Otherwise, you are a dead fish.
Secondly, at every age, between 5 and 10 years old, it's the best age to be able to teach, because they assimilate. If you emphasize a language the kid already knows, he's not going to be able to get much English.
A kid coming from Europe or South America, whatever, it takes about three years to become proficient in English. My son came when he was 7 years old. No English. At home, no help. And he had to learn the language. In the classroom, the teacher had only one language. In three years, the kid was swimming.
Bilingual education is negative
to the students. It holds back the language. For example, people coming from Korea are successful in business. Why? They master the language. And they're the ones still working. That's the situation.
At Garfield High School, we eliminated bilingual, and that's why I had so many successes. We eliminated bilingual education, and all the scores started going up. The kids were monolingual. Otherwise, you have the right to be in that bilingual or ESL class forever.
A bilingual teacher should teach in two languages. For example, if I'm going to teach division, I should teach in one language, then repeat the same thing in another language. But here, when the bilingual teacher speaks two languages, he only teaches in one language. That's the weak point."

As a proud parent and staff member of Academia Semillas del Pueblo, I urge you to check on your facts before running articles regarding things about which you have no clue.
As I am reading your article on our school with information provided by Doug McIntyre, the facts are simply not correct! For one, I am American, and a person's race should have nothing to do with their right to a decent education. I have two children here, and I am an employee here as well. Teaching a person about his or her culture has nothing to do with racism. The only racist I see in this situation is KABC!
Parents have a choice to bring their children here as we are a public charter school, and there is no recruitment process based on race or cultural beliefs. If you are a parent who cares about your child's education, then you are welcome here, plain and simple.

SANCHEZ: What public schools are doing today, says Aguilar, is preparing Latinos for nothing more than minimum wage jobs. Here at Semillas del Pueblo, he says, Latino children and their families can claim their rightful place in American society on their terms.
Mr. AGUILAR: Nowhere in the Constitution of the United States or in the Declaration of Independence does it say that, because you come here, you have to now become an American. The United States is who is the immigrant here, not us.
El Sereno (LA32) is now made up of Antonio supporters. They have no clue what the rest of the city is doing. They are no where to be found when the big issues come before city council.

I read Hernandez's op-ed. It still doesn't change the situation, that the LA Times is the largest and most respected daily in Southern California, and one of the top papers nationwide.
Show me one statistic that indicates a drop in thousands of LA Times readers, and an equivalent surge in readership in the Daily News or some other amateurish journal.

As Professor of Chicano Studies at Cal State Northridge, Rodolfo Acuña teaches that the U.S. annihilated millions of indigenous people and took half of Mexico by force. But the past isn't his sole purview. His classes also delve into the harsh realities facing Chicanos and Mexicans living in Los Angeles today. As its foremost scholar, historian and activist, Acuña is to the Chicano/Mexican community what W.E.B. Du Bois was to the early civil-rights movement. Not only is he the founding chair of what is now the largest ethnic-studies department in the nation, but also his Occupied America: The Chicano's Struggle Toward Liberation is the most widely assigned text in Chicano-studies programs across the U.S.
Acuña's bibliography also includes The Sonoran Strongman, A Community Under Siege, Anything But Mexican and Sometimes There Is No Other Side. Combining theory and practice, Acuña in his activist role has really championed the Chicano/Mexican community, including support of the 1993 UCLA student hunger strike for a Chicana/o-studies department. Always confronting racism, he's rallied against the noxious anti-immigrant Proposition 187, the English-only?initiative and the dehumanizing effect of labeling all Latino immigrants * whether U.S. born, legal or undocumented * as "illegal aliens." On a more personal note, he even sued the University of California, Santa Barbara, for political, race and age discrimination after he was turned down for a position in the Chicano Studies Department, despite his credentials. Acuña won a milestone victory when a multiracial jury in Los Angeles agreed that he had been discriminated against; however, the judge refused to compel UCSB to appoint Acuña to the position in dispute. Instead, he was granted a $325,000 award. He continues to struggle for the rights of those in the barrio to get a higher education.
In Anything But Mexican, Acuña writes, "An ethnic group unable to define its past is unable to take pride in its accomplishments...History is more than just an esoteric search for facts; it involves a living community and its common memory."

In attendance: Committee Members: Jessie Granados, Hugo Garcia and Sadra Larsen. Community: Semillas Del Pueblo Representative: Marcos Aguilar
1. Call to Order: 6:35 PM
Committee members agreed that public comment was welcomed, but would be limited to one minute.
2. Mr. Aguilar provided committee members with an update and review of the Academia Semillas Del Pueblo Charter School being under attack by negative media coverage. On May 31, and June 1, 2006, KABC Talk radio (owned by Disney) broadcasted that Semillas was teaching an Anti-American curriculum, as well as instilling racist beliefs in their schoolchildren. Semillas has a progressive multicultural curriculum that is approved by the state. The local television media also attacked the school by reporting the school had low test scores and only catered to Latino families. However, Semillas is able to refute all allegations as it serves children of all races in the community, in addition to helping children that might not have a chance to succeed. Semillas is at the forefront - ahead of other schools in addressing the need for schools to teach other enrichment languages such as Mandarin, as identified by the Department of Defense. The school is competitive with other schools in that area and can chart the progress of each student. Lastly, Semillas’ student body reflects the demographics of the local community it serves. However, due to the negative exposure, the school staff and student body came under attack. The school received racist/terrorist threats, which included bomb threats to the school and the children that attend the school.
After the verbal update, Mr. Aguliar screened a video to committee members detailing the false accusations against Semillas as well as what he and the school, in fact, do.
3. The Social Justice committee agreed to and will request several Action Items at the next General Board Meeting on July 5, 2006, that would support:
• The Semillas school has the right to exist
• Semillas’ Multicultural curriculum
• Positions against hate crimes and terrorist threats to staff and children of the Semillas School
The Committee also is requesting that the neighborhood council support a call for a meeting involving Disney, the LA-32 Neighborhood Council Social Justice Committee, and Semillas to address our concerns.
Other avenues covered were the need for LA-32 to develop a letter of support by the Corresponding Secretary. This letter would be distributed to local elected officials and LAUSD. Mr. Aguilar will provide the list of officials.
Another recommendation is for board members to write their own letters of support to both elected officials and Disney.
The Committee invited Mr. Aguilar and the school community to attend the next General Board Meeting on July 5, 2006, to screen the Semillas CD and inform the board and stakeholders of what is happening at Semillas. On behalf of Semillas Mr. Aguilar agreed.
