Mexico presidential race too close to call

By TRACI CARL, Associated Press Writer

Mexico's presidential election was too close to call Sunday, with a leftist offering himself as a savior to the poor and a conservative free-trader both declaring themselves the winner. Officials said they won't know who won for days.

Electoral officials said they could not release the results of Sunday night's quick count of the votes, which they previously said would happen only if the leading candidates were within one percentage point of each other. Luis Carlos Ugalde, president of the Federal Electoral Institute, said an official count would begin Wednesday, and a winner will be declared once it's complete.

Felipe Calderon, 43, of outgoing President Vicente Fox's National Action Party, had been running an exceedingly close race with Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, 52, of the leftist Democratic Revolution Party. The Institutional Revolutionary Party's Roberto Madrazo, 53, had been trailing in third place.

Fox appealed for calm amid fears that a close result would raise the potential for violence.

Thousands of Lopez Obrador supporters, waiting for hours in the cold rain in Mexico City's central plaza, began shouting "Fraud! Fraud!" when Ugalde came on live television to announce the delay. Lopez Obrador said late Sunday that he would respect the delay in declaring a winner, "but I want the Mexican people to know that our figures show we won."

Calderon spoke minutes later, saying he too will respect the results — but that the official preliminary results, as well as the exit polls, show that he's the winner.

"We have no doubt that we have won," he said.

The race exposed deep divisions between Mexico's rich and poor in a nation desperately trying to match the success of its northern neighbor.

You can also say that free trade policies over the past decade have contributed to a more liasse faire, less secure and more open border policy. Oddly enough, neither of the two political parties can avoid blame on this issue. However, things could get interesting these if policies faced a push back on the other side of the border.

"Do Immigrants Really Take Our Jobs?"

Moderated by Andrés Martinez, Times Editorial Page Editor

Immigration may be a national issue, but its economic implications are felt locally. Is it true that immigrants are taking jobs away from U.S.-born Angelenos? Or do those who come across the border take the work that Americans just won’t do? Join Jack Kyser, chief economist for the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation, civil rights attorney Connie Rice, Fernando J. Guerra, director of the Center for the Study of Los Angeles, and Times op-ed columnist Erin Aubry Kaplan as they discuss the economics of immigration and how they affect local politics and race relations.

At 01:51 Central Standard Time, with 70.52% precincts reporting, these are the latest numbers from Mexico's Federal Electoral Institute (IFE):

Calderon:
37.23%
10,881,915 votes

Lopez Obrador:
36.30%
10,608,901 votes

Madrazo (old guard PRI)
19.73%
5,767,428 votes

Calderon clings to the lead by 0.93%, or 273,014 votes. Shades of Ohio?

The IFE will begin a full vote recount no earlier than Wednesday, when votes from the most remote precincts will be available.

Looks like this cliffhanger will extend until next weekend.

White people will never elect a woman or minority president in our lifetime.

What the hell was Gil Cedillo doing on Azteca América tv offering his political insights? He could hardly speak Spanish--not to mention how he kept repeating the comments made by the anchormen. He should stick to what he knows!

Lopez-Obrador is whining about 3 million missing votes preumably from Alta California. Perhaps he is preparing for AV's loss as the the successor to the Governator in 2010.

Top bad California does require fingerprints of voters like in Mexico. If so Robert Dornan would be in the 38th district for his 10th term instead of the illegimate imposter Loreta Sanchez.

3:01 PM,

It was very well publicized in Mexico that vote by mail from the US, which came in early, was extremely low. Of something like 11 million eligible voters in the US, less than 40,000 exercised their right to vote, presumably due to the Mexican Consulates' red tape.

BTW, Lopez Obrador is up ahead by 2 porcentage points in the recount, with 90% of all votes being fully counted. This mess is gonna be held up in the courts at least until September.
