Non-Profits, For-Profits, And A Billion-Dollar Bond

When you hear that a "non-profit" group is advocating a given policy -- say, "affordable housing" -- you naturally think that it's an organization of altruistic individuals trying to improve our community, right? You envision Mother Theresa, or maybe the ASPCA. These are people who aren't in it for the money; they're in it to make the world a better place.

You are SO naive!

This morning I was listening, as I always do, to the only REAL news show in Los Angeles, namely, McIntyre in the Morning, and I heard the oddest ad, for something called "OUR Backyard," (http://www.backyardweb.org/) about how the high cost of housing is driving business out of our city. If I heard it correctly -- I was on my first cup -- the ad was purportedly sponsored by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LACEDC), "a non-profit organization."

So I started clicking away and, long story short: both the LACEDC and "Our Backyard" are paid for by big businesses that have a huge financial stake in promoting as much construction as possible, ideally paid for by taxpayers.

LACEDC's membership list (http://www.laedc.org/membership/companies.html), for example, includes the Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and a passel of other giant law firms, the Beverly Hills/Greater Los Angeles Association of Realtors, etc., etc.

As for "Our Backyard," it is sponsored by the "Building Industry Association of Los Angeles / Ventura" (http://www.bialaventura.org/), the mission of which, of course, is to build, build, build.

So the next time somebody tries to get mileage out of the fact that a given organization is "non-profit," don't be fooled into giving the organization "brownie points" for credibility or altruism.

You will hear a great deal about "non-profit" organizations wanting to build "affordable housing" if only you'll agree to this tiny little billion-dollar bond proposal. Don't fall for it. People want that billion-dollar bond passed so they can profit from your desire to improve the city. They'll use every trick in the book to mislead you about their motives and identities.

I was at Bristol Farms market yesterday in Beverly Hills. These people were outside begging for donations and signatures. They want to send a petition to City Council to demand more housing for the homeless. I hope they don't sell my data to some spammers. On the list it said they were approved by "guidestar." Guidestar is just a list of all nonprofits, legitimate ones and ones with expired IRS letters. It means nothing.

Suspect Arrested After Shots Fired in Pico Neighborhood

July 17 – Police arrested an ex-felon with a gun after shots were reportedly fired in the Pico Neighborhood Friday, police said.

The suspect has been identified as Timothy Mansion, a 25-year-old black resident of Santa Monica, said Lt. Frank Fabrega, the Police Department spokesman.

Mansion was arrested and charged with being an ex-felon with a firearm with a gang enhancement.

Officers assigned to the Pico Neighborhood Taskforce/Operation Safe Streets arrested Mansion after receiving a radio call of shots fired in the 2000 block of 20th Street, Fabrega said.

Investigators conducted a follow-up probe and presented the case to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office.

The incident continues a series of reported shootings and other violent acts in the Pico Neighborhood this month.

July 14 -- Five Hispanic teenagers were arrested this week for a gang-related assault after they jumped a black youth at the Pico Neighborhood border near Santa Monica High School Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

The victim, a 19-year old Santa Monica resident, told police that he was at a local fast food restaurant near Lincoln Boulevard and Michigan Avenue when the suspects approached him shortly after 4 p.m.

“Apparently, one of the suspects said something to the victim and then all of the suspects began to punch the victim,” said Lt. Frank Fabrega, the police department spokesman.

The victim ran and the suspects gave chase, Fabrega said. One of the suspects pointed a handgun at the victim. The police were notified and the suspects fled.

July 13 -- Despite a dramatic increase in police patrols, a woman said she was sexually assaulted in Virginia Avenue Park early Tuesday morning -- four days after a gang-related shooting only yards away from the scene of the alleged crime.

The woman – who police officials said was “extremely intoxicated” but speaking – was found near a pay phone at the recreation center inside the park around 6 a.m. by a custodian who heard crying, according to park staff, and stayed with her until police arrived, according to park staff.

The woman said she was using the pay phone when she was “sexually assaulted” by a Hispanic male, approximately 20 years old, who fled on a bike, police said.

Her alleged attacker has not been arrested and the woman was taken to a hospital where she was treated and released, police said.

Police huddled with park staff Monday to discuss the July 7 incident, when a teen -- who is not affiliated with any gang -- was reportedly shot by gang members during a water break of a pick-up soccer game around 8:45 p.m. The teen was sent to a local hospital and is recovering, police said.

Police Mobilize After Two More Shootings in Pico Neighborhood

By Lookout Staff

July 10 -- Police are mobilizing “an overwhelming presence” after three gang-related shootings in the Pico neighborhood last week, including two over the weekend.

The latest incident took place at around 3 p.m. Sunday on the 1900 block of Euclid when several individuals narrowly escaped injury after a car pulled up next to the vehicle they were in and began firing, according to police.

The shooting came two days after a Hispanic man was shot in the upper body at the City’s newly expanded Virginia Avenue Park around just after dusk Friday. The victim was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for a non-life-threatening wound, police said.

A July 4 shooting on the 1900 block of 19th street also put a 25-year-old black man from Santa Monica in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries

In the shooting Sunday police are seeking two suspects who were reportedly driving a late 1980s to early 1990s two-door Honda Accord, gray with a black bumper.

The suspects are described as Hispanic males between the ages of 14 and16 police said. One suspect is 5’6 to 5’10 with dark hair and a heavy build. He was wearing a black hat with a white “T” shirt.

The second suspect is around 5’10 with a thin build and dark hair, police said. He was wearing a black hat with a white “T” shirt.

In Friday’s shooting in the park, the suspect is described as 15-year-old Hispanic male, 5’8 and weighing approximately 180 pounds, police said. He was wearing a white baggy “T” shirt and shorts.

A preliminary investigation indicates the incident appears to be gang related, however, the victim did not have any gang affiliation, according to police.

The suspects in the July 4 shooting were described by police as “two male Hispanics in a metallic blue 2-door compact vehicle.”

Although the three shootings are gang-related, police are still investigating if the incidents, which appear to be isolated, are connected.

Police also are investigating if gangs from outside Santa Monica were involved.

"We're still looking into that," said Lt. Alex Padilla, a police department spokesman. "We're still investigating that."

Chief Butts has said that much of the gang violence is perpetrated by gang members from outside the City. (see story)

Anyone having information regarding these incidents should call the Robbery/Homicide unit of the Santa Monica Police Department at 310-458-8451 or the Watch Commander’s Office at 310-458-8426.

Man Wounded in Pico Neighborhood Shooting

July 5 -- Police are looking for two Hispanic men allegedly involved in the shooting of a black man in the Pico Neighborhood Tuesday.

The shooting comes less than one day after a Hispanic man from Los Angeles was shot and wounded near the Santa Monica pier shortly after midnight Monday. (see story)

The July 4 shooting took place at around 2 p.m. in the 1900 block of 19th Street, a corner of the Santa Monica’s poorest and most diverse neighborhood that has been riddled for years with gang violence.

Officers who arrived at the location were unable to locate any victims, but spoke to a witness, said Lt. Frank Fabrega, the police department spokesman.

During the course of the investigation, the police department was contacted by a local hospital that reported a patient had been taken in with gunshot wounds.

In a Troubled Area, Violence Competes Daily With Progress

The LAPD's 'South Bureau' continues to be a hot spot, with some fearing that civil unrest could erupt at any time.

By Matt Lait and Scott Glover, Times Staff Writers

July 17, 2006

Earl Paysinger doesn't mince words when talking about the 57 square miles of urban landscape he oversees as a Los Angeles Police Department assistant chief.

"It's a violent piece of real estate," the 30-year LAPD veteran said. "This part of the city has always been a great challenge for us."

The real estate he's referring to is South Los Angeles, an area singled out last week by a blue-ribbon panel as a deeply troubled hot spot where tensions between residents and police run so high that civil unrest could erupt at any time.

"It's hanging by a thread," said civil rights attorney Connie Rice, who spearheaded the panel's examination of the LAPD's Rampart Division scandal. "I would not be surprised if something were to blow there this summer."

Police officials and some community leaders acknowledge that there are serious problems to contend with — but they do not believe the situation is as dire.

Paysinger, in fact, believes that relationships between the LAPD and the community are getting better.

South Los Angeles is policed by four LAPD divisions collectively known as "South Bureau." The district stretches from the Santa Monica Freeway to the Los Angeles harbor.

LOS ANGELES, July 17, 2006 - Police are looking for an alleged gang member suspected in the shooting of two young brothers in Boyle Heights Saturday night.

Police think Mexico-native Mauricio Alejandro Jimenez fired the bullets into a crowd that hit three-year-old Jeremy Hernandez and his six-year-old brother James.
James was hit in the stomach and is listed in critical condition. Doctors say Jeremy, who was hit in the wrist, is in stable condition.

Police say the 26-year-old shooting suspect is a a long-time member of the Boyle Heights-based Tiny Boys gang.

They say Jimenez has been arrested at least seven times in the past several years for a variety of weapons and gang-related charges.

He was deported to Mexico just four months ago after serving more than a year in state prison.

Top White House adviser Karl Rove traveled to Los Angeles last week to pay homage to the anti-immigration enforcement lobbying group for Latinos: the National Council of La Raza.

"La Raza" is Spanish for "The Race."

It's bad enough the White House lent its prestige to The Race's annual conference. But did you know the Bush administration has forked over millions of federal tax dollars to The Race?

According to U.S. Rep. Charlie Norwood, R-Ga., The Race snapped up $15.2 million in federal grants last year, and more than $30 million since 1996. Undisclosed amounts went to get-out-the-vote efforts supporting La Raza political positions. The U.S. Department of Education funneled nearly $8 million in taxpayer grants to the group for a nationwide charter schools initiative.

Among The Race's most infamous government-funded charter schools is La Academia Semillas del Pueblo, the Los Angeles public school that teaches "Aztec math" (ancient dot math is the new math) and the Mexican indigenous language of "Nahuatl." The ethnic separatist principal of the school, Marcos Aguilar, told a sympathetic UCLA interviewer:

"We don't want to drink from a white water fountain. . . . We are not interested in what they have because we have so much more and because the world is so much larger. And ultimately the white way, the American way, the neoliberal, capitalist way of life will eventually lead to our own destruction."

Either Wacko and his anonymous friends (I suspect it's him in disguisse) really don't get it, or they just look past the obvious.

This blog was better when we could focus on local politics, not illegal immigration.

You're a lunatic. Why would the individuals and organizations you mention validate a murderer?

They validate his right to stay in USA and support illegals such as Mauricio Alejandro Jimenez to stay here.

Mauricio Alejandro Jimenez is one of thousands who commit crimes against Americans on our soil. You can compare this as a terrorist act. We are fighting our own little war in our communities.

Mayor Sam has not bragged about the number of hits he has been getting in a LONG time.

my guess is- numbers are way down since Walto took over. Walto needs to get a life-- how much time every day does he spend on this blog, between his postings and his responses?

when does he find the time for organizing his Minuteman rallies?

You ask me and he sounds melancholic, longing for the days when we were all proud to contribute to the Sister City's skyrocketing hit counter.

You must have be from Mars or Mexico!!!!

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION IS THE ONLY ISSUE IN LA!!!!! Plus the anti-American Mechista racists in City Hall!!! There is NO other issue!

Illegal aliens and Illegitimate politicians!!! That's it! Period!

Tony Villar, Gil Cedillo, Bustamante, Art Torres, Armand Navarro, Fabian Nunez, Jose Huizar, Gloria Molina, etc. are NOT Politicians...they are rabid, anti-American Mechista reconquistas.

For proof positive, you can purchase a CD for $7.00 in which you will hear audio clips of all of the above, plus others, spewing their anti-American hate speech and calling for the Mexian reconquista of the U>S>.

I ordered 20 copies and am making hundreds of copies to send to every talk show, journalist, friends and family. It will be the greatest campaign fodder that ever existed against these Razas.

Believe me...LA is awake and we will take back this city from the Mexican mafia!

Oh no the Mexicans are coming! We should all move to Canada.

Let me get this straight, you want me to spend $7.00 of my hard earned money to hear racist rhetoric and spin. I get that from folks like you for free.

This blog isn't the same. But then again, the goal was met. This blog was a clever political tool to bash Hahn and insinuate pay to play and other supposed unethical actions. Look at what happened since AV won: #1 posts on this blog gradually decrease #2 focus of conversation is cd14 and constant infighting (AV = CD14) #3 because most all of current staff is AV ally or relative no one dares say anything negative about our current establishment. This was an AV blog from the get go. Hertzberg ran against AV intentionally. They needed to divide the votes enough so when Hertzberg was defeated (being the minority of the three)his votes would automatically go to AV based on his endorsement.

So there you are,the reason this blog has fallen to crap. We do need a blog that can keep the focus on City Hall, development, city bonds and taxes, trash issues, water increases, environmental impact, nepotism and lastly "pay for play".

Will someone step up to the plate and create a new site similr to the original Mayor Sam???

For someone who supposedly hates this blog so much, you sure spend a lot of your time posting here! And, as for the supposed preoccupation with illegal immigration, take a look at the main page, count the stories, and count how many of them have anything to do with illegal immigration. Divide the latter into the former, and multiply by 100 for the percentage. Then go elsewhere.

P.S. I just did the calculation for you. The answer is 0%. That's how many of the current postings deal with illegal immigration.

First of all, ALL of the "racist rhetoris and spin" is from people like you. This city if COMPLETELY polarized...we are either pro-illegal immigration and reconquista; or we are ANTI-illegal immigration and reconconquista! There is NO GRAY MATTER.

Obviously you are pro-illegal and pro Mexican mafia!

And, believe me...we are not moving to Canada because you and "your people" are invading us. We will stomp you out and take our city back!!! You ain't seen anything yet!

You and 'your people' only know one thing...violence! The only nouns you have in your vocabularies are 'racist' and 'xenophone'. Well, who the fuck cares what you say...we are AMERICANS who want all of you Mexican gangbangers and troublemakers out of this country. And that includes most of City Hall and CD14 and the Assembly.

You need to get down on your knees and kiss my ass because you are in MY country! And don't you forget it! You have your own country...such as it is...and you will be packing your bags when we stomp you out! Who the hell do you chicanos think you are???? You certainly are NOT Americans! So shut your fucking mouth up!!!!!!
