Wendy Greuel for AD 40?
Can it be true? Is LA City Councilwoman Wendy Greuel really eyeing the State Assembly seat being vacated in 2008 by Lloyd Levine?If you ask the Stuart Waldman campaign the answer is an emphatic and almost fearful "NO!" and for good reason. Stuart has already gotten screwed out of the seat once and doesn't feel like going through that again.
Greuel, the popular City Councilwoman from CD2 could probably beat the stuffing out of virtually any candidate for that seat, in fact many insiders have told us here at the Sister City that Greuel would "probably win in a walk."
The consensus seems to be that depending on when she decided to get in the race support for her opponents could easily evaporate. In other words she can afford to get into this late.
Greuel was first elected to the LA City Council in 2002 and she faces what looks to be an easy reelection next March.
From 1997 through her election in 2002, Wendy worked in the Corporate Affairs Department of DreamWorks SKG, where she worked on government and community relations at the local, state, and national level. Prior to that, she worked as the Field Operations Officer for Southern California under Cabinet Secretary Henry Cisneros in the Department of Housing and Urban Development during President Clinton's administration. In that position, she was instrumental in coordinating the federal government's response to the 1994 Northridge earthquake. She also served as a member of Mayor Tom Bradley's administration, working on a number of important policy issues, including the creation of Los Angeles' nationally respected after school program, LA's Best.
Some believe that her extensive resume sets her up for a "free run" at the State Assembly.
Indeed there doesn't seem to be much of a down side for Wendy running. She would expand her name recognition outside of her district, in all likelihood win, and set herself up for a future mayoral run.
Of course it is up to Wendy if she wants to become a frequent flyer on Southwest Airlines or not, but the speculation certainly makes this race intriguing.

I was a supporter of Wendy's until I heard from one her people that she's become too damn close to Antonio and kisses his ass. How did we get such a sorry group of council members? At almost every community meeting people make fun of them. They can't think on their own and make sure they don't get AV mad. Greuel makes the dumbest statements in council. What has happened to Greuel and Hahn? They behave like women pms'ing and need either hormone shots or prozac.
Wendy bends over backwards for every developer that comes along. In Sunland-Tujunga
she spun a huge loss ( the Canyon Hills Development) as a "Big Win".
She now has the Home Depot situation
which could cost her the Foothills if
they are allowed to open.
I need to see her get tougher and stand up for her constiuents before I will vote for her again.

LA Business tax that Wendy had passed in council is a joke now because LA ranks 16th in nation for business as being too expensive.

Wendy tries too hard to be nice, to not offend anyone. Due to this, she has become a wimp. She does not stand up for any issue. She just wants to please. She thinks this will get her elected. I contend that it will be her downfall. She has no guts and therefore, she loses my vote. I would take gutsy and more independent-minded Dennis Zine over her any day.

You think Felipe running for CD 7 is news? Cindy will beat him to death. He won't have the money Alex has nor will she have to appeal to a larger demographic. She can focus in on the people who feel wronged by Alex.
Neither of them live in CD 7 so don't bring that up. It's already been hashed out here.

This is a problem for Stuart. Wendy has her issues, but in the community she's seen as an attractive, thougtful politician - and she has succesful husband as well as a kid. She fits the liberal, yuppie demo of the district. Stuart on the other hand is kind of smarmy, cheesy, greasey and comes off like an old frat boy. His military experience is not going to impress the Costco set. He needs to knock up his wife, have a kid and buy a mini-van soon.
Wendy is the type that the Democrats could easily move up, she's got a great family story, she's worked everything from small business to the White House to the corporate world. Stuart really can't match that level of experience.

I disagree -- assuming Wendy has Mayoral aspirations -- getting re-elected in CD2 and then running Citywide for Controller in 2009 would seem to make much more sense.
I agree that she would easily win the AD 40 race. I just don't think it positions her well for Citywide office.
Wendy use to be a strong woman who stood up and didn't care who she offended. That made the perception of her as a leader a lot stronger. Since Antonio was elected she's flip flopped and the perception is she's to afraid to annoy him and will jump through hoops to keep him happy even though she may not agree.

Come on! Anyone that knows her knows that she will fight the big fight. She's not afraid of anyone and she's not afraid of any issue. She's one of the best we have at Council and it will not be a good day if we lose the likes of her!

Yeah, well, too bad for you that the overwhelming majority of Wendy's constituents lover her to death, and will elect her into any post she runs for.
The deck chairs are already being rearranged for the "odd" numbered districts for 2009. Fabian Nunez will shuffle over to CD1, "One Bill" Gil Cedillo will seek CD9 (Jan Perry), leaving Jan Perry for Cedillo's and Ed Reyes for Jack Scott's Senate seats. And you wonder why the redistricting promise isn't showing up in the legislature?
The gossip out on the 4th foor is Wendy has become just another Antonio groupie. Her constituents bad mouth her because she has supported issues with Antonio they don't. They see her as a dumb female falling over the mayor hoping he will do something for her. She lost her credibility when she spoke in favor of a commission appointments without even knowing the person. She supported Jose Huizar just because AV told her to.

She has a family. She won't run statewide and go to Sacto, she will stay close to home and win big for whatever seat she wants. Nobody wants a piece of Greuel.

first, who the f lives in van nuys? jeez, he and the wife must be pulling down at least 200k what with the boondoggles he gets and they live in van nuys?
Get a small house in mar vista or something. Sheezus.
Having kids might be a good idea - but i have a feeling they are both into their careers and will have the kid when stuart has compound roids and the wife is over 35 - i no doubt will see them at family events with my wife and our kids, who will by then be grown up and i will have my hair and my wife will have a waist line.
plus, how can you possibly raise kids in van nuys = there is no oxygen in the summer.
on greuel, i forecast she will run and in the primary it will be about 85% greuel to 10% to cherny and 5% to waldman - here is a little tip, if you want a job that badly, play hard to get.
finally, get some lipo or something. the valley is not about being all shmaltzy it is about being tone and good looking - levine won cause next to cherny he was a god - hertzberg won only because nobdy wanted the job.
