Bush Doublespeak: "We are a nation of laws, and we must enforce our laws."
Translation:
"We are not a nation of laws, and I have no intention of enforcing our laws."
Bush Doublespeak:
"Amnesty would be unfair to those who are here lawfully and it would invite further waves of illegal immigration."
Translation:
"I'm granting amnesty, but let's call it something else."
Bush Doublespeak:
"I believe that illegal immigrants who have roots in our country and want to stay should have to pay a meaningful penalty for breaking the law to pay their taxes to learn English and to work in a job for a number of years. People who meet these conditions should be able to apply for citizenship but approval would not be automatic, and they will have to wait in line behind those who played by the rules and followed the law. "
Translation:
"Anyone who came here illegally can stay. While billions of people elswhere live in squalor, and would give a kidney to live here, you, despite having broken our laws, can stay put, get a free education for your kids, and free health care for you and your family. But you will absolutely have to pay 1000 bucks, and learn a few key phrases in English. We're dead serious about that part."
Bush Doublespeak:
"The Guard will assist the Border Patrol by operating surveillance systems analyzing intelligence installing fences and vehicle barriers building patrol roads and providing training. Guard units will not be involved in direct law enforcement activities that duty will be done by the Border Patrol."
Translation:
"I'm sending the 'National Guard' to the border, but specifically preventing its troops from guarding the nation. Instead, they can take pictures and build stuff for a year, while illegal aliens continue to pour across the border."
Bush Doublespeak:
"The United States is not going to militarize the southern border."
Translation:
"The United States is not going to defend its southern border."

So just now five years after 9/11 Bush realizes there is a problem on the border?! And he expects us to believe him. Puhhleease. This speech was just more of the same amnesty pablum. Basically a big f-u to Americans who want real border enforcement. His attempts to redefine amnesty are pathetic, as are his attempts to create the false choice of either "mass deportations" or "legalization." Go after scumbag employers who exploit illegals for cheap labor and take away the social welfare benefits and illegal immigration will diminish through attrition.

Ubray, forget McArthur Park! Let's walk through the nations of Africa, in many of which the average lifespan is 30 years. Let's walk through Thailand, where people boil herbs to kill their hunger pangs. Then, lets move as many of those poor people into your house and apartment, because you're a caring, loving person, whereas I'm just some jerk who hates poor people.
There are reasons other countries are Third-World hell-holes, and our country is the envy of the world. Not everyone can live here. If you want to help the world's poor, go right ahead. But help them in their own countries.

stop with your simplistic politically correct bullshit. Border enforcement is not "brutal" -- brutal is how the Mexicans treat those on their southern border. And the illegals cost in social services/broken schools etc. much more than outweighs what they pay in. I feel sorry for their destitute circumstances, but direct your moral outrage where it belongs -- at Vicente Fox and other corrupt members of the Mexican elite. Start the revolution there.

I think it's just good business to make the flow of people into and out of the U.S. a relatively efficient and easy process. I don't really give a crap about being a nice person. However, I do think that I have a perfectly valid moral argument for treating immigrants who come here as regular human beings.
The offer still stands. Tell me, how are you going to be mayor of L.A. if you are afraid to walk its streets and meet its people?

Isn't it convenient for Vicente Fox that he doesn't have to take care of his poorest citizens; he knows he can just send them here. We have an obligation to take care of OUR poorest citizens - something becoming more impossible by the day because so many resources for the poor, disabled and disadvantaged are siphoned off for people who came here uninvited.
Investor's Business Daily had an interesting commentary on all this recently. Since the President of Mexico seems to think he has a right to a say-so in our country's treatment of his lawbreaking citizens, then we better get something in return. Specifically: oil. Mexico's got lots of it and it's been in a govt stranglehold for decades. I say we send them a bill for medical, education, prisons - anything they've used that costs the US money. Let them know we'll take payment in oil. Sounds like a plan to me.
