Young Dems Wussing Out?

Last month we carried the story that the San Fernando Valley Young Democrats had endorsed Assembly Member Cindy Montanez over their club founder - Councilman Alex Padilla - for the Democratic nod for the 20th State Senate District. You can imagine that Padilla has been the recpient of much scorn, ranging from our usual gallery of dum dums to Democrat activists across the state, and now, the Capitol Morning Report.

It may have been too much for the Young Dems, the following is their attempt to save Padilla some face:
Club members, It has come to my attention that an item appeared in this morning's Capitol Morning Report ridiculing Councilman Alex Padilla for failing to win SFVYD's endorsement in the 20th Senate District race. As you know, Councilman Padilla is one of our original club founders and a longstanding supporter of our organization. SFVYD had no prior knowledge of this item and does not support its contents. Our endorsement of Assemblymember Cindy MontaƱez should not be construed as a criticism of Councilman Padilla. Ours is one of the few clubs in the Valley that issues primary endorsements; when choosing between good Democrats it is our highest priority that all candidates, endorsed or not, shall be treated respectfully. This is especially true for Councilman Padilla, for whom our club has great admiration. I have received assurance that this negative usage of our club's endorsement will not happen again. As such I consider this incident resolved. SFVYD is proud of our endorsement of Assemblymember MontaƱez; we believe she is the best candidate in the race. We are likewise proud of our club's reputation for practicing constructive politics, and are committed to continuing that practice. -- Posted by Damian Carroll, President SFVYD

Apparently this endorsement made the KCAL news right before the "Ask the Mayor" segment. The YDs should be actually excited that their club is getting much attention and it goes to show the worth of this endorsement.

Montanez is surprising everybody, I'm sure hat's why Padilla is crying over the spilled milk.

As a member of the SFVYD i voted for the best candidate (Cindy Montanez), now i feel my vote has been undermined by Damian. This endorsement is suppose to mean something otherwise we wold have dual endorsed (but we didnt). in fact the actual vote wasn't even close.

Damian you let me down.

The YD's SHOULD HAVE been happy, but they aren't. There has been alot of hay over it because it came as a stunner to APad's camp.

As a YD myself I think Damian has seriously screwed up here by undermining the vote of the group and speaking officially out of turn.

The truth is, most of the endorsements in the valley don't mean shit... except the young dems work their asses off for the candidates they endorse.

DPSFV isn't a bad one either although a more geriatric crowd there.

I never read much into endorsements as they rarely reflect a candidates qualifications and more often reflect a given candidates friendship with others.

That is why the candidates who aren't campaigning but rather seeking endorsements that provide no cash or bodies on election day are going to be sitting at home on June 7th. Names that come to mind are Alex Padilla, Lyn Shaw-Hilfenhaus, Mary Barrientos, Sean O'Brian... the list goes on and on.

Cindy is all over the place, Alex looks unsure every place he thinks of going and then doesn't show up half the time. Not smart.

And Damian... really stupid move man... really stupid.

OK 2 things.

The YD's refused to endorse Lyn Shaw, by a huge margin I might add, because she has no issues we care about, never shows up to meetings and has no campaign to speak of. OK She claims to have a campaign but her campaign has no web site and didn't bother to tell her when the endorsement meeting was even though the VP of the club supposedly "works" for her. Alger would have gotten the endorsement had the rules not been changed midstream, or had our VP blurted out that he had won the most votes in an obvious attempt to signal Lyn's supporters who until then were clamoring for a new vote. Suddenly we couldn't pick between the winning candidate and no endorsement even though we did on another candidate, although a lot of his supporters did leave by then so who knows.

Secondly, Cindy got an overwhelming majority of the votes there because we liked what she had to say. Alex wasn't bad, but Cindy was better. It really came down to that, for me anyway.

I too have an issue with Damian undermining our endorsement. He certainly doesn't speak for me on this issue.

David Z doing great job over at LAweekly.com. We all knew Antonio was all over the District 2 election and he just confirmed it.
BACKERS OF ARELLANO remained suspicious, saying Duffy obtained the background information from two sources with close ties to the mayor ā€” California Teachers Association representative Don Attore, who served on Villaraigosaā€™s transition team, and UTLA attorney Jesus QuiƱonez, a longtime personal friend of Villaraigosa who works for UTLAā€™s law firm, Geffner and Bush. QuiƱonez is also a mayoral appointee to the board of the Metropolitan Water District, where Villaraigosa recently tried without success to install former Assemblyman Richard Katz as that agencyā€™s CEO.

i didn't think the young dem endorsement meant much 'til it hit the news last night--- and it would have never hit the news if they endorsed padilla

obviously there are clear differences between cindy and alex... most of the recent endorsement have demonstrated that, so obviously the YD are not the exception.

March 09, 2006 8:03 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Damian there's really no need to try to make alex feel better- your membership spoke and now lead them to make the endorsement meaningful

the fact is many want to see padilla falter- he's been a thug of a councilmember--- cindy is the type of fighter that people can get behind and back and clearly they are.

what's amazing is how overconfident and arrogant padilla was waltzing into this race... he should of though it out better considering he's got a whole term left on city council.

Damian your post is a little strange, it lessens your strength of leadership... padilla's thug life is still a concern for some, but like the school yard bully who gets beat up by a girl he'll be no "threat." Make sure cindy wins and you'll end up looking like a true democratic activist.

I've heard Alex is really working the party hard in a last minute attempt to save face. He should have it based on his realationships with party. If not, he is in real trouble (at least in alot more trouble than he already is)

As for AV, didn't both endorse him for mayor? What would possibly hurt Alex is that he did go with Hahn the first time around. Also, if i do recall i did see a lot of Cindy's staffers working at the AV valley office not to mention staffing AV at many valley events.

But knowing AV he will make the choice based on how it will help him get to the next seat.

i like Cindy also. Iwould also agree that most clubs don't do anything. what they do do though is help spread the word/ not by phone banking but they give media and others the perception on a winning camapaign.

in most campaigns even the best ones i've seen you never reach more than maybe 10-20% of the voters. that is why in a race the media is going to play an important role in what people think.

Damian is a stand-up guy who is opposed to the slash-and-burn politics of LA. I imagine that if we had more people of integiry like him running things, we could actually get something done in this city. He's a pragmatic progressive who appreciates that we may not always agree, but everyone should be focused on what's best for the people and their government.

Kudos to Damian -- who I'm pretty sure personally is supporting Cindy -- for not letting the SFVYD endorsement be used for ad hominen attacks on Padilla.

The critical focus of his blog is that Cindy is the best candidate of the two because she'd make a better Senator.

The Young Democrats are no more involved in government and law than the Young Republicans. Any group of young people who dedicate as much time to politics and elections as we do often have also committed ourselves professionally. That being said, I've been active in Young Democrats politics for the past 6 years and I have never worked in government, choosing the private sector for my day job.

First the formal group: the entire leadership are a bunch of resume-padding losers clinging to whatever political power they think they have.

Here's some news for y'all: no one cares about your club's endorsement. How much money did you bring the campaigns?

Thought so.

So, quit airing your dirty laundry in public.

Second, the non-club members are also weak. This is the district that brought us Cherny-Levine, right?

One attacks blacks and minorities in the Dem primary; the other's claim to fame is a self-circulated rumor that he dates reporters and was an also-ran for almost being considered as an Associate Assistant Vice-Bachelor.

I think it is very immature for adults to be posting personal attacks on both these candidates. First of all Padilla was the youngest president to sit on the council for 2nd largest city in the nation. He went to MIT which I'm sure many of you don't even know what that means. He was a leader and kept this city from panic during 9/11. He's smart and he has a lot of support citywide.

I want to read the issues both Cindy and Padilla support and their vision. Sad that in this day and age people have to resort to personal attacks instead of the real issues to show their support for a candidate. This is why LA is falling apart.
