Democratic Activists Back Alger

Some of the dum dums might think "Here we go again, another Alger post." But hey we don't make the news, we report it. The Alger campaign is one of the campaigns that is smart enough to send us press releases. Other campaigns and politicians aren't, and well, they're usually the ones who wind up getting made fun of by our resident dum dums. At any rate, here's what Jim Alger is up to today:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ASSEMBLY CANDIDATE RECIEVES MAJOR ENDORSEMENT
Valley group backs Alger

March 11, 2006 - Van Nuys - As the race for the 38th district seat of the California State Assembly heats up, Jim Alger (D-Northridge) picked up a key endorsement, and even more momentum today.

With over 100 people in the room, "Valley Grass Roots for Democracy", a collective group of grass roots activists, and Democratic Party regulars overwhelmingly voted to support Jim Alger's bid for the Democratic Nomination.

"This endorsement shows that Jim Alger is the peoples' candidate. He knows the issues, is running a campaign and will continue to work for each and every vote" said campaign spokesman Michael O'Connell. "It is the same everyplace we go. Once people hear his message he wins their support."

"Thank you, from the bottom of my heart thank you." Alger said to an energized audience after the vote "I expect to see you on June 7th because this campaign is not going to stop on June 6th."

In order to receive the endorsement a candidate must have received two-thirds of the vote. "Jim received considerably higher than that" said club member Susi White.

Another supporter rushed up as Alger was leaving, "You don't have to convince us anymore, you have us" she said.

The Democratic Primary will be held on June 6th, 2006.

And Alger...How is THIS good for our environment?

"City garbage trucks would travel 1 million more miles each year under a plan approved Friday by the City Council.

The city would divert some trash from Sunshine Canyon Landfill above Granada Hills to dumps in Riverside County and in Avenal, 200 miles north.

The council has renewed a contract to take all the city's trash to Sunshine Canyon but has until next week to rescind that deal. If implemented, the policy approved Friday would cost the city an additional $11.1 million over the next five years."

1 million more miles per year from those environmentally friendly trucks?

Alger did an excellent job today.

It will be tough to win but he will surely take the nomination.

He is proving to be a larger force than many expected.

These folks are intoxicated with his in your face style but will soon wake up with a hangover and ask themselves, why the hell did I think he was a viable candidate?

Maybe but his in your face style is a breath of fresh air, and life in a Democratic Party that has been on life support.

He may not win the general, but he is just what the party needs to energize voters.

Alger just gave an amazing speech in Simi Valley tonight.

Its no supprise his support is gaining rapidly, I have seen Lynn speak and it is painfull to watch. All she says is she is a woman and we need women in office.

That isn't going to cut it especially since Jim is a strong advocate of womens issues.

Alger and Cindy are both proving that they have the tenacity to make it.

What I think is funny is Alger supports Cindy, Shaw supports Alex. Birds of a feather flock together I guess.

In June the slate will probably end up being Cindy in SD 20, Alarcon in AD 39 and Alger in AD 38.

Lynn only has herself to blame. She can't speak in front of an audience so she depends on her "relationships" to get her endorsements and thereby credibility. Endorsements don't vote.

She ran a "campaign" for 2 days. During those 2 days they bashed Alger, degraded his wife, and aligned themselves with a City Councilman who has publicly endorsed the Republican in the race. They did not offer a single solution for any issue in the 38th.

Alger talks about the issues and solutions. He has a proven record of fighting for the average person and while you may not agree with what he says, at least he is saying it.

That is why he will win the primary.

C'mon, Mayor Sam. Surely you, and most of the readers here, understand that if you don't get ELECTED (that doesn't mean "endorsed" or win the primary), you can't do a thing.

Alger seems like a bright young man, with a lot of good ideas and energy, but this is a REPUBLICAN seat, and he isn't gonna take it and hold it. He needs to save his money and energy for the next redistricting and move into a district where he has a chance to win the General Election, not just the primary.

Phil, that may be true but there have been many districts where the school of thought was that the challenger couldn't win... Alarcon over Katz or even the Wildman race.

Upsets do happen, while not the norm. Dem Registration in the district has shifted 6 points in recent years making this, as most races, all about turnout.

Now combine that with what has happened to the GOP on a national level and add to it a GOP candidate who is way to the right of his own district, and a pro gun, pro business Democrat who energized audiences when he speaks to them and it could happen. Ask anyone where Alger has spoken. Love him or hate him they are talking about his speech regardless of who else was there.

While I agree it is a rough road to hoe, history has shown that it can and often does happen.

I think many of you are missing the importance, in the party, of Alger winning the primary.

He is running against a left-wing insider. A women who collects party titles like you gather up silverware after dinner. She is the anointed one. But she is a lousy candidate.

She has done a lot of work for the party but has never Lead anyone or anything. What she has done is build up a piggy bank full of owed favors. Combine that with her union boss husband who has been twisting arms to force "endorsements" and "support" and it is no wonder that she would be considered by insiders the odds on favorite. Except one thing...

Look at her endorsement list. How many people, besides Alarcon who has been friends with Lynn for 30 years and needs labor support, have ever spoken to Alger?

So how can you endorse against someone you have never spoken too? That is an argument the Algerites have been making and with much success. Jim Alger gets endorsements after people hear both him and Lynn. Lynn gets endorsements when she is the only player in the room. That argument has been reducing the power of her endorsements substantially to the point where the activists don't follow them blindly.

Put simply, Lynn is the "Crony Candidate" and Alger is the "Peoples Candidate".

The Democrats want change. Alger sells them hope. That is what he did with Wal Mart and he won when everyone, including me, thought he would lose.

There is nothing about Lynn that says energy, change or hope. That is the bottom line. She should have backed Alger when she had a chance to get County Committee seats from him. After the attacks on his family he redoubled his desire to win, and is coming on with a vengeance.

In short, if Alger wins the Primary, he would have knocked out a longtime party steward who cashed in all her chips to win and lost. That will change the party, I believe for the better. He will use his win to influence public opinion and force change in a party. That is why this race is significant regardless of the result in November.

Let us compare the candidates?

On the environment...

Lynn Shaw-Hilfenhaus - claims to be an environmentalist.... She shows up to the Sierra Club in a gas guzzling Jaguar!

Jim Alger pulls up in a Honda Insight.

Lynn Shaw-Hilfenhaus - Has never said a peep opposing Sunshine Canyon, supporting clean air standards or frankly any other environmental issue.

Jim Alger is embroiled in a battle over Sunshine Canyon, has put forth a plan to include an economic component to "infrastructure" to reduce the need for commutes, has proposed corporate incentives to encourage mass-transit use and supports increasing CAFE standards to reduce both emissions and our dependence on foreign oil.

On WOMENS ISSUES - You would think Lynn Shaw-Hilfenhaus as chair of the Democratic Women's Caucus would be strongest here but not really...

Lynn Shaw-Hilfenhaus - Claims we need "More women in the Legislature" but is quietly supporting Alex Padilla for Senate.

Jim Alger has openly thrown his support to Cindy Montanez.

Lynn Shaw-Hilfenhaus - Was given the issue of Prop 73 by Planned Parenthood to fight in November, and gave 2 known speeches about the issue.

Jim Alger donated his phone banks, volunteers and staff to oppose the issue. His family members were out in front of the issue using their story of abuse to demonstrate how the proposition was a bad one. On election day he donated vans for a massive Get Out The Vote campaign.

Lynn Shaw-Hilfenhaus - Supports freedom of choice.

Jim Alger Supports freedom of choice but has also made that a large part of his campaign against his anti-choice Republican opponent speaking at various engagements all across the district which leads into the bigger point...

CAMPAIGN
Lynn Shaw-Hilfenhaus and her ilk bash Jim and his family.

Jim Alger has refused to engage in negative campaigning.

Lynn Shaw-Hilfenhaus - Does not engage in any issues that effect the district, has no web site, no staff, no money, no precinct operation, no speaking engagements and tries to convince people she is a serious candidate.

Jim Alger engages issues constantly, has a staff, a massive press operation to which we are all witnesses to, a field operation in Santa Clarita, Simi and the San Fernando Valley's, is running phone banks and precinct walking every day, and is on his third mailer. Now that is a serious candidate.

The truth is that when you compare these two candidates there is really only one candidate.

- a proud Algerite

Algerites intoxicated with false hope and heading for a crash.

Democrats have sold our state to the public employees unions. We have a budget short fall because of hugh givaways to the Unions. Alger wants to give a hugh raise to the EAA.

The give aways to Unions and entitlements programs caused the state to raid local funds. This caused a cut back in basic services in every city and county.

Sheriff Brooks of Ventura County and Sheriff Baca of LA, had to fight to preserve a basic level of safety. Brooks won Baca lost. Look at what is happening in the jails and violent crime is up in county areas because of these cuts. They are only now coming out of this funk because of the uptick in property tax assessments.

The State Assembly's Public Safety Committee is filled with wackos. They actually considered passing laws that allowed people to possess Child Porn. They think child sexual preditors can be treated.

The Dem Secretary of State giving state money to a political support who runs a non profit and the supporter funnels it back to his campaign.

Meathead is using taxpayer money to fund a campaign for universal preschool. More money from you. They say it will be the rich that pays but it is an entitlement. When the economy goes south, so will the number of rich folks, than they expand the definition of who is rich. Get it, that would be the folks in the 38th Distrct. YOU! This is what happened with the DOT COMS. New entitlements could not be sustained when they crashed and the Dems have refused to cut them back.

The great Democratic Party in California is controlled by a bunch of Left Wing Wacko's and crooks.

The 38th District does not need a Democrat that will walk the party line and Alger will do exactly that.

If he wants to win he needs to challege, Goldberg, Leno, Nunez and other Dems who a screwing this state up.

His platform includes more entitlements; like expanding After School Care and Universal Health Care.

Who do think pays for this, Taxpayers. Are the taxpayers babysitters for every kid after school. What happened to parental responsibility? You make a decision to have a kid, you and your family work it out.

Universal Health Care! Could you imagine California with Universal Health Care. People would move or immigrate legally or otherwise just to get those benefits. Who pays? YOU!

California is already one of the most enviromentally focused states in the Union. We pay a heck of alot more at the pump then they do in the midwest. DWP is pursuing a plan to ensure that 20% of our energy comes from renewable sources. That will cost residents of LA $54 Million Dollars per year.

Enviromental Laws are feel good measures for the Hollywood Elite but work as a regressive tax on the poor and elderly.

That means they pay more of their income then the rich for green energy but the rich feel good and donate money Dems who have sold their souls to the highest bidders.

March 12, 2006 2:30 PM

You can thank our Mayor for giving such a huge raise to DWP even though he repeatedly has said this city is in a $270 mil deficit. But then again he sure finds money when its suits his purpose for photo ops. Wasted tax dollars on tons of stupid studies like the elephant study that cost $300,000.

If Baca needs more money to help with the violence in jails tell him to give back that prvate $10 million plane he bought to travel privately.

2:30 PM Anon "The 38th District does not need a Democrat that will walk the party line and Alger will do exactly that."

ARE YOU FOR REAL??? The Democratic Part establishment is supporting Lyn Shaw-Hilfenhaus BECAUSE Jim Alger doesn't "walk the party line."

Alger has crossed the party on Business Tax Reform, and Gun Control.

Lyn Shaw Hilfenhaus IS A LABOR CANDIDATE! her Husband is a union boss. She describes herself as "representing the left wing of the party". She is Chair of the Democratic Women's Caucus and former Chair of the County party. If there ever was someone who would tow the party line to the detriment of all of us, it is Shaw-Hilfenhaus.

Remember, Alger OPPOSED the IBEW contract because he felt it would create the exact mess it has created.

Sounds to me like you need to recalibrate your radar and jump on the Alger train while there is still time!

No one should support Alger if he continues to call for an expansion of entitlements or fails to take on the morally bankrupt Dem Leadership in Sacramento.

Universal Health Care and expanded After School programs are more entitlements that residents in the 38th District will have to pay for.

The raiding of local funds by the state have impacted the LAPD who are 900 Officers short and the City is facing a $250,000 million short fall. The State is billions in the hole for its annual operating budget and he is talking about expanding entitlements.

Dems want to allow child sexual preditors the right to possess Child Porn. If he is against it, call out Goldberg, Leno and Nunez.

If he wants to demostrate to the residents of the 38th District he thinks like the rest of us, these are the folks he needs to take on.

He will not take these folks on because he may need them down the road. This debate regarding Child Porn has been going on for weeks and yet he has said nothing. His Democratic Party is behind this.

Are you referring to AB 632? I searched the Assembly website and thats the only bill w/ his name on it concerning sex offenders/child porn.

If so...AB 632 was Authored by Chu and Spitzer (a Republican). It was Co-Authored by Leno, (and also by Benoit (Republican)).

AB 632 also already passed the Assembly and is now in the Senate.

Gee I guess 11:47 is a complete idiot. Since when does Senator Alarcon need Labor in an uncontested primary? He endorsed Lyn Shaw because Jim Alger worked for him and he knows the difference between the two people.

He endorsed Lyn Shaw Hilfenhaus because he has known her since she was a child and he has known Jim for a year.

That endorsement has nothing to do with qualifications at all. Frankly every endorsement Lyn has is due to favors and her "work" in the party.

She herself calls herself the "Sacrificial Lamb". Even she knows she has no chance of winning, which is why she has no campaign.

The Lyn camp better be careful. If they start making hay out of these so-called endorsements they're liable to end up with "qualifiers" because not one of these "endorsers" think she can win, or believe she would be a good leader in the Assembly.

March 15, 2006 10:41 AM

I heard Lyn say the same thing at Valley Grassroots, that no-one could win the race. Even her husband made comments similar a while back, so I wonder why they are fighting so hard behind the scenes to win?

Is it really about the Central Committee? If it is, maybe they should have just run for it instead of pissing off Alger so much that they are running a slate.

Pretty dumb move guys. From what I have read, Alger would have given you the CC seats.
