Alger has strong words for City Council
March 8, 2006 Van Nuys, CA -Text of comments, as prepared, by Jim Alger, Democratic Candidate for the 38th State Assembly District before the Los Angeles City Council regarding the Sunshine Canyon Landfill.Mr. Smith, when you ran for office you claimed to be the only candidate with a plan to close Sunshine Canyon. Over 3 years later we have not seen any such plan. Now you claim there is no legal way to close it. Surely if that is the case your nearly 20 years of work as Chief of Staff for your predecessor gave you that knowledge before you made such a statement to the voters of your district.
And you wonder where our cynicism comes from.
Our Mayor, while a candidate and since being elected made a pledge not to renew the contract at Sunshine Canyon in writing, and even threatened a veto should the City Council approve it. Now he stands as one of the chief supporters of extending the contract.
And you wonder where our cynicism comes from.
This community has listened to the lies of politicians for decades. The community has watched BFI get top-level meetings with politicians on all levels of government while community leaders; neighborhood councils and average residents get pushed to the side.
And you wonder where our cynicism comes from.
What is happening here is nothing more than a betrayal of the community trust cleverly wrapped up in a package of smoke and mirrors by a council office that is so blinded by hatred of community leaders that they do not even know – that they don’t realize that communicating with the people can get you everywhere and the old school politics in this city is over.
In my term as a Neighborhood Council president I have often debated individuals including many in this horseshoe on various issues, but I have only had one attack not just of me, but my board members as well. I have listened while the Chief of Staff for CD 12 first wanted me to sign a letter saying Mr. Smith was smarter than me, then tell me the way to get back into Mr. Smiths good graces was not to say anything if I disagreed with him. I tried that, but to continue would violate the oath I took to the people who elected me. If you guys weren’t so busy worrying what license plate is on a car, threatening to sue Neighborhood Councils or taking credit for their accomplishments we wouldn’t be backed against the wall in the 11th hour.
For those councilmembers who may wonder why I hold Mr. Smith accountable despite all of your praise for him, you didn’t attack me, he did. You didn’t eliminate the community from the discussion, he did. And you didn’t promise to close Sunshine Canyon… he did.

The news is that the pompous asses in Smith's office have officially cut off communications with the North Valley Coalition.
These guys have some balls.
They basically cut off everyone who ever disagrees with them and then wonder why citizen activists get so pissed they blast them at City Council.
This is kind of old news Sammy. Jim went off on Smith Wednesday after he heard about Smith personally calling the North Valley Coalition and telling them basically to buzz off.
This Smith and Alger thing has really escalated since the Sunshine Canyon Vote. Alger said Smith was going to screw the community and that is exactly what he did.
I almost spit my coffee out of my nose when Alger told them, right there at City Council, that Smiths' staff should stop worrying about what license plate was on a car. Those frat boys over there lost their minds over that stupid CD12 license plate. They made such a big deal about it that every staffer in City Hall knew exactly what Alger was talking about.
Keep in mind that this happened immediately after Smith threw a fit and told off the farmers that had just testified. Next thing up was Alger on a remote from Van Nuys giving Smith a smack-down.
You couldn't write comedy this good.

Jim has stated repeatedly that he has no intention of running against Greig Smith. In fact, he has stated repeatedly that he may run for CD 12 when Smith is termed out.
This is important because it demonstrates why Mitch Englander goes after him so much. It is about Mitch Englander running for Greig's job. That is why Mitch moved into the district and has joined the police reserves... which he doesn't miss a chance to introduce himself as Chief of Staff/Reserve Police Officer.
If this guy went through the Police Academy, puts on the LAPD Blue, pins on a badge, straps on a gun and goes into the community to protect its citizens, he should introduce himself as a Reserve Police Officer and Mr. Alger and fans should support that volunteer spirit.
Englander joined the LAPD reservesso he could use it as a step into a Council run. Do not confuse him with a real police officer.

Smith's plan to close Sunshine was RENEW/LA. its a great idea, but it didn't pass in the CA Assembly (Not Smith's fault).
And since our trash needs to go somewhere...why would we spend MORE money and make more pollution to ship it further (while also sending it to Sunshine)? It MAKES NO SENSE to split the trash...especially since one of the two alternatives (the closest one) already said "NO" when it came to LA shipping trash over there.
Alger has no chance for the Assembly seat, it is SAFELY REPUBLICAN (as www.aroundthecapitol.com reports). And interesting enough...Alger hasn't posted his cash on hand...makes me wonder how little $ he actually has.
RENEW LA is a CITY BASED plan NOT a State based plan and it did pass City Council so please get your facts straight.

What Alger has pointed out is deeper. If Smith never wanted to truly get us out of Sunshine, as appears to be the case, then mow many tax dollars were wasted chasing that pipe dream?

Alger is clearly using this race to spotlight issues he cares about. What will be interesting is to see what he does in June after he wins the Primary.

One school of thought is that if BFI lost the largest contract they have, Sunshine would become insolvent and be forced to close.
However the larger issue is that Smith lied to his community about closing Sunshine, and now the community is fitting him with a noose.
It would be all good is Smith had said there was nothing that could be done about Sunshine, he didn't. He promised to close it and guided the community through a maze of hearings and meetings only to screw them over in the end all the while bashing other City Council members, Mayors, State Legislators, and City departments.
This is a well deserved lynching.
As someone who knows Jim, there are a few funny yet ironic parts to all this I'd like to share.
- Jim could have never lambasted Greig from Van Nuys if Greig hadn't been so instrumental in putting the remote facility in in the first place.
- Here is the funny part, Jim was running late. If Greig hadn't stood up at the end of public comment to yell at the Mexican Farmers, Jim wouldn't have made it.
So Greig losing his mind and responding to someone in public comment, which he isn't supposed to do, actually allowed Jim the time to get off the elevator and in the room. It stopped Greig from responding to Alger as well since he couldn't get away with that twice.
Now none of this would have ever happened at all if Smith would have just sat down with the community.

You can tell Smith told his staff to get on that blog and trash Alger. I'm sure the people in CD14 wish they had an Alger to question and hold their council member accountable. Jim Alger saved us $6.40 per month on our DWP but wants us to pay $2 a month to stop the dumping at Sunshine Canyon and commented in support of Green Energy which will cost us $3.50 per month. If Alger has is way my net savings will be 90 cents per month.

Also your comparing apples to oranges. Peoples' water bills vary greatly and the total he has saved you is now over 24% as Algers actions have prevented the subsequent 6% hike from taking place prior to an audit and notification to neighborhood councils.
So the amount of money Alger has saved you continues to rise.

Where Alger will seriously step in the mud will be if he makes the same pledge. So far he hasn't although he has floated the term "goal of closing". I would advise him against that and when he releases his plan he should just stick to the facts. That has worked for Jim so far.
Jim Alger is navigating some pretty choppy waters with a precision that I haven't seen in politicians with twice the experience as he, and building support every step of the way.
He is careful about what he says, while making it appear that he isn't. He launches precision attacks while always leaving a way out (just in Smith's case he is to dumb to take it). He picks his battles after much thought and consideration, like a good chess player thinking 5 moves ahead.
It causes people to underestimate him and while I don't believe he will win his current race, I think he is learning allot very rapidly, I think that is why he ran in the first place... to learn how to run, and I have no doubts he will hold higher office. It is what he does when he gets there that we need to watch. As long as he doesn't become the very thing he abhors he will be fine.
So he will heckle those who take a stance but fail. Will only take a stance that will not hurt him politically. Is careful not to say anything that can be used against him.
What you see as political virtues, I see as moral failures.
Do we really need someone who runs away from accountability. Have we not learned anything from the likes of Ludlow?

The lobbying question can be handled very easily - there are dozens of hungry lobbying firms out there. The County Fed can afford anyone of these. Watch Victor Griego's firm, DSO, be the first in line - that is if Skelton doesn't beat him to it. But Martin did begin his political activism in California working for a Griego project - you know, the one where they registered hundreds of voters at local cemeteries.

While your criticism is legitimate, your numbers are off.
Jim has stated that he supports increased trash fees as a way to assist paying to stop dumping in Granada Hills. Right now, we do not pay for our trash. That comes out of the General Fund, money that could go to other services such as Police, Fire, road repair ect. Considering the city hit us with a $10.00 surcharge to pay for our trash cans, Jim feels 2 bucks more to stop contributing to the problem in Granada Hills is a small price to pay.
Keep in mind that with the reduction of 3,600 Tons of trash per day, and the trucks that carry it not driving to the dump, the net benefit could be cost neutral if you factor in lower health effects.
That is the only increase that Jim Alger supports at this time, period.
Several factors come into the EAA situation but Jim does not support increased fees to accommodate increased wages, but also doesn't believe that they would be necessary.
To explain this would require a chart and lots of math, but bottom line is that Jim doesn't support any other increases.

Jim Alger is absolutely the only candidate in the 38th district who is talking about issues, and acting on his words.
No-one cares about forms, or other crap from years ago but we do care about clean air, clean money traffic and a litany of other issues.
Jim is discussing those issues with the community. His Democratic opponent is trying to be the anointed queen but not being too successful. While she gets endorsed by the party elders, Jim is getting all the grassroots support. Exhibit a was his successful blocking and damn near getting the Young Democrats endorsement.
Exhibit b was his getting the Valley Grassroots endorsement.
Remember, Lyn supporters thought she was going to get them all, as they hear Jim they come around to him.
The big difference between the candidates is that Jim's supporters BELIEVE in him, Lyn's supporters owe her.
So, According to Lyn she has remained neutral on the Alex and Cindy race. Did anyone catch the car full of Padilla lawn signs?
She also lists Alex as an endorsement of hers.
If she is so pro-women why is she endorsing Alex? and why is she afraid to just come out and say she endorses him publicly?
The least they could do is not show up to a Democratic event with a car stacked with Padilla signs, obviously heading over to his "campaign kickoff" later today.
With all the stuff going on with Ludlow and blogger allegations that it is only the tip of iceberg, candidates should come clean regarding their past.
If Alger knowingly made false statements or perjured himself we should know.
If Hilfinhaus sold drugs near a school, we should know.
If one of the Republican Candidates has a problem with alcohol, we should know.
If Alger believes in "Transparency," lets see it. He raised transparency as an issue.

He is dishonest. Cops do not go after folks for making innocent errors on a DMV form. There is more to this story but we will only know if Alger comes clean.

Ya know, I just dug up a quote from Alger back in a January email to Smiths office that MayorSam posted. For Smith to have not done anything about this when he was clearly warned was his own stupidity...

What I would like to see is a realistic plan to get us out of landfills.
People may love Alger or hate him, but he is the only candidate even talking about the issue, and not slinging mud. That is why he has earned my vote.
The Shaw-Hilfenhaus folks have no issues so they have no other tactic left but to attack.

Ya know, kind of like Smith threatening to sue him or little Mitchell Englander, in his capacity as "reserve" police officer and Chief of Staff for Councilman Smith threatening to "destroy" him. I suppose that never happens either huh?

Look and the recent school board race. Mr. Arellano down played his arrests history and got called on it.

The school board race involved a candidate who failed to disclose that he was arrested, did not serve his full probation and has a current warrant for his arrest.
In addition, the school board candidate lied about 2 degrees.
There is no comparison between that and a missed check-box 10 years ago.
Jim has released the information on this and made it public. That is how you even know about it.
On the other hand the Hilfenhaus camp hasn't even bothered to discuss their ties to the penal system and of course, you aren't inquiring of that.
No matter how much spin, it was still a form and it was still 10 years ago and the case was still dismissed in the interest of justice.
All the gory details is nothing more than an attempt to keep a story alive that he didn't have released in the first place.
Of course the overall intent of your repeated mantra is to divert attention away from the issue at hand, Sunshine Canyon and the promises that are broken to the community.

According to the NORTH VALLEY COALITION, Greig Smith has cut off all communication with them.
Now say what you want about Alger but we need to look at the facts.
Greig said he had a plan to close Sunshine Canyon when he ran for office, never turned in any plan.
Alger warned everyone last year after Englander called him to lobby for the extension that Smith's office wasn't serious.
Then Waste Management pulled out of the bidding saying the City wasn't negotiating in good faith.
Then Smith screams for "alternatives" but anyone who watched City Council could see he was steering it all back to BFI.
Then Smith SPONSORS THE MOTION that extended the contract JUST LIKE ALGER SAID HE WOULD DO A YEAR AGO!
Sorry Smith Staffers, Alger called your lying asses out on this one, again. No amount of trying to change the subject will beat that one fact.
