The Alternative Z-Man
You knew him when. David Zahniser, writing for the Daily Breeze, was a very diligent scribe who had a tendency towards towards bobo-suburban sentiment. Out in Torrance, it was no problem for Z to crank out a story on, say, how Fernando Guerra was guilty of lobbying while Latino. No problem---we expect that in our farflung suburbs.
But now Z-man is a cosmo, alt-press kinda guy. And now at the LAWeekly, he's got his hands full of Union, with two stories today that touch Labor's time of troubles in town.
Here's Z-man's story on Chris Arellano, with a chilling quote at the very end:
That's the lede most days; for sure it's the most dramatic statement of the whole campaign to-date; it's certainly the most expressive of both the problems of Chris Arellano, and also of the sinister dimension of the big machine behind Monica Garcia. But in this time of trouble for LA's unions, Zahniser drops the quote down to the very bottom, obliging UTLA head A.J. Duffy first, making sure you understand that Chris Arellano is the Union candidate, and giving of all people the head of the UTLA, A.J. Duffy, more ink than anyone else in the whole story, more than the Arellano campaign itself, or for that matter, more even than Monica Garcia, who happened to come in first place on Tuesday, handily.
Speaking of ledes, check the other Z-man union article this week, on Martin Ludlow:
"A package full of cash!" It's the visual that sells it. How big of a package can 13 hundred dollar bills possibly represent? People who currently have 13 ones in their wallet or purse---please don't answer, that's cheating.
With visual images like that, you get to convict Ludlow not just in deed, but in the mind's eye as well. The truth is that $1300 represents not so much a sensational "package full of cash" as a tiny church collection plate on any given Sunday. The truth is that the "eye-catching" package of cash is a sum that wouldn't keep, say, a Federal prosecutor alive for two days.
It's a tough time to be a union apologist, granted. You have to be a very forgiving soul. The choices made when the ranks were thinning were not always prudent ones.
But isn't it odd, even ironic, to be reading so much union-sensational stuff in the LA Weekly of late? The would-be alternative voice of LA?
It used to be the alt press could at least be depended on to squeeze in other villians. But between the addition of the Z-man and Marc Cooper's assaults on the UFW, the whole frame has changed. It's now the alt press that serves as management's de facto media point-people, availing their precious column inches to problem after problem, often at the exclusion of other news.
Union this, union that, union bad, union going down. We know, and it's sad for some, and boring for others. But really--anything else going on in town worthy of scribbling about lately? Or can we now depend on the LA Weekly to tell us every week about how bad bad bad those big bad crumbling unions are?

But García supporters also made clear that they view their candidate as unstoppable, with one privately saying UTLA could put up $1 million and still not overcome their candidate’s powerful connections and tremendous momentum.

NOTHING QUITE GRABS THE ATTENTION of a prosecutor like a politician carrying a package full of cash. And in the criminal investigation of former Los Angeles City Councilman Martin Ludlow — now the ex-head of the powerful Los Angeles County Federation of Labor — Ludlow’s delivery of $1,300 quickly became one of the most eye-popping details to emerge from the state and federal probe, which deals largely in arcane campaign-fund-raising rules.

David Z man makes the other LA reporters look so damn lazy. He goes after a story and really researches and gets facts they can't. Just read his two stories in LA Weekly and even though the LA Times, LA Opinion, Daily News and others wrote stories no one else had the inside scoop like he does.

Can Bianco Arellano NOT lie about ANYTHING????
“I’m perfectly willing to sit down with the public and say, ‘Hey, I made dumb decisions, but look what I’m doing now with my life,’ ” Arellano said.
YEAH, baby lying to voters every time you move your teeth.
“Look how I’ve changed my life around."
I'm looking, Chrissy. Dont see it. Except for the ill-fitting suit. Other than that, same smooth-talking scumbag.
"It’s important for our youth to know that yes, you make mistakes, but you can always do better.”
Translation for the Hustler-Speak impaired--You can always spin BIGGER lies each time you get caught.

We can't see Monica's lips moving because she always has food in it.

THIS ALL OCCURRED ON MONICA'S WATCH
City Controller Laura Chick has released a much anticipated review of over 1,000 audits, reports and studies of the Los Angeles Unified School District and determined that the District has a disturbing lack of transparency and accountability.

Not to be bitchy, but this isn't really a Monica thread or a Chris thread---it's about the LA Weekly's relationship to unions, whether or not it's a devolving or even a dead relationship.
I agree with 12:01 that Z is good at getting facts out there. But I'd like some feedback on what expectations are, and whether or not we can expect the facts at the Weekly, with Z at the helm of the City beat, to always be so celebratory of problems at the City's unions going forward.

Remember everyone DAVID Z WAS THE ONE WHO BROKE THE FLORIDA INVESTIGATIONS AND THE MONEY ANTONIO TOOK DURING MAYORAL CAMPAIGN. HE ALWAYS BROKE STORIES IN THE DAILY NEWS AND EVERYONE ELSE FOLLOWED.

Did I misread that article, or does Dr. Z finger Duffy as the one who leaked Arellano's background to the press?

David Z worked for Daily Breeze. He's not afraid to print the facts even though I remember at city council meetings you could feel the tension against him. He's a super nice guy and does his job RIGHT. All the reporters should learn from him. Don't do your stories half ass do them factually and right. How does he get quotes and facts others miss?

3:54 PM Poster: AJ Duffy did not leak the information about Arellano. The information came from the Garcia campaign.
Anonymous said:
It really doesn't matter who leaked it. Most who know Chris knew he was always less that forthright. The public has the right to know who they are voting for. His past should have been one of the first conversations he had with his campaign. They could have twisted the info to his benefit if they knew what they were doing.

Uh Mailanduhr, i hate to break it to ya, but not only ARE you being nitchy, you got yer head up yer ass too.
not about Chris? The fact that this lying sociopath is the candidate of the UNION is not relevant--I suppose none of the $280,000 in union members funds down the crapper backing this lying grifter came out of your pocket.

Mayor Sam... what's gotten it to you? Letting this Martini guy splash around a bit too much in your otherwise smart pond.
Mailander's just a plain dope. He wish he had the chops of Zanhiser and Cooper. Accusing the LA Weekly of being anti-union is, well, about as dumb as accusing the late Mr. Yorty of being a pinko commie.
Has it occurred to the apparently sauced Mr. Mailander that the Weekly is tough on unions because it is so CLOSE to them? That maybe the Weekly feels like its responsibility to call out their friends and buddies when they do wrong? Writing hard truths about a Martin Ludlow or a corrupt UFW is hardly being a patsy for some amorphous "management." It's rather about doing the right thing.
Anyway, Mayor, why don't you send this a** back to exile in his own Republic. You don't need him.

Mailander you pencil-dicked, pogue-ass, turnip truck ridin', trifling mutha fukker. Is it true that your head can actually be easily screwed off such that anyone can pour a heaping load of BULLSHIT directly down your neck? You and David Zee can 69 it all night if you wanna, but you know its pk calling the shots.

Yeah, its GOOD to be the king!

Mudslinger McGreevy is a lazy amateur compared to the Z-man, a real journalist. No wonder the Times is going down the tubes.

Let's add LA Times Steve Hymon to the list of reporters that's not afraid to go after the facts. He nailed Wesson today in the paper. We need more reporters like this to let the public know what type of corrupt politicans we have in LA.
